Xbox 360 goes 60GB, 20 gigger going for $299 while supplies last
Word on the street was that the $299 price slash we've been hearing about wasn't about carving out a new pricepoint but instead making room for a new 60GB Xbox 360 in its place. Turns out the Mr. Word on the Street nailed this one, with Microsoft finally fessing up to the price drop, and announcing a new fancy 60GB Xbox 360 to fill in at that $349 pricepoint, which will be available in "early August." You can pick up a 20GB "while supplies last," but the $279 Arcade and $449 Elite aren't budging price wise. Oh, and can we just say that this couldn't come at any better a time? We just had to delete August Rush to make room for National Treasure 2, which we'll probably have to drop tomorrow for Fool's Gold. Such is life when you've only got 20GB to work with.Update: Now up for an Amazon pre-order with an August 4th delivery.
[Thanks, Sean H. and Chris]

60GB is nice. The 120 in my elite is entirely too much. However, 20GB would never suit my needs. I think this is going to be a really good thing.
What is wrong with everyone? I haven't heard 1 RROD joke yet? Please, someone...
August Rush is much better compared to those movies, really...
I think 20GB is fine personaly. I download movies once in a blue moon and watch them, but as soon as they expire, I delete them. I never download purchases such as tv episodes cause they are available free online...or if I were going to, I'd simply delete them at a later time.
Yes I do recognize that many other people may "need" larger HDD's.
I would be much happier if Microsoft finally started embedding WiFi a/b/g/n chips into all 360's.
Two questions though, as I am preparing to buy my first xbox 360. (shut up, i know, i live a sheltered life)
First: 20 GB sounds like a decent amount for games and movies, but aren't you able to stream video content from your pc? Also, what codecs does it support?
Second: Wasn't there that hack a while back that allowed you to turn any hard drive into an xbox 360 one?
Of course, it would have been nice if Microsoft didn't lock people into proprietary hard drives, then the issue of space never would have been an issue in the first place and people could have used whatever sized hard drive suited their purpose.
@ Mike
20gb is enough for most people buy 60 if you use a lot of media. also is supports divx but not itunes drm content and most music formats.
I normally stream divx and xvid to my console with my XPS1330, but the GPU melted. While I'm waiting for dell to fix it, what is the best way to transfer movies from my external USB HDD to the xbox HDD? I tried plugging it directly in, but I guess it only likes flash drives. Do I have to transfer each file to a flash drive or DVD-R? That seems a bit silly.

@Adrian
You can't put your own video files onto a 360, at all. You can put music on a 360 by ripping it from a CD but that's it. Maybe when your Dell gets back you should look at other brands, you know, one's that don't suck.
I agree, 20gb is not enough space. At first i thought it would be... but now im down to like 2 gb. 120 sounds like alot for me. I just hope they sell the 60gb HDD separately at some point.
20GB sucks. 20GB is nothing. You can blow through that in no time.
This price drop is NOT A PRICE DROP.
IT'S A CLEARANCE SALE. Dumb dumbs.
60GB drive? That's it? A bump of 40GB to the drive and we're supposed to go flocking to the stores?
WEAK!!!
About time this happened, might finally pick up an xbox. But seriously was their a point in the plugs for the not so good movies?
yeah.
there is no such thing as too much space, you're crazy :)
I think I'll stick with my PS3, it too is also 60GB.
Oh, I almost forgot. For those of you who didn't know, the HDD on the PS3 can be switched out with any 2.5" SATA drive. One reason that I don't like the 360 is that you have to buy one of Microsoft's special 360 drives if you want more storage. Since I'm pretty sure that Microsoft is the only ones that make 360 HDD's, there's no competition, thus Microsoft can charge a lot more for them.
Ok, you have fun with your three games, more 360s for me.
I got a 360 because its a gaming console and it does a good job of that. Although I wish I could add my own SATA drive legally without worrying about being banned. I really hope the PS4 will give the next Xbox a run for its money. That way, M$ has to open the system up like Sony has for the most part (Memory Sticks, USB HDD, swappable 2.5" SATA HDD, BT headset, store music from PC, store videos from PC...)
Western failure.
No Halo, Gears of War, Burnout??
LOL, happy gaming "Haze" or some other PS3 crap.
who needs more than three games when you have metal gear solid 4
Also, as long as you copy the partition over, you can switch out the 360's drive with any SATA drive you want. Opinions are fine, but don't spout them off if they're unfounded.
@white_ultras
I don't know where you get your info, but the PS3 has Burnout Paradise.
If I had either one, I would stop bothering to comment on Engadget and go play instead...
Either one is pretty awesome, so fanboys, shut up.
Both PS and XBox are aimed at different types of gaming... XBox seems to be a lot more multi-player oriented, while the PS has traditionally been a lot more single-player oriented. If I didn't have any friends I would buy a PS3. If I did I would buy a 360. Or because I don't really care about the price of stuff I would just buy all the new systems like I did, and play the good games and not worry about what system they are for.
Yes, switching out your hdd in a PS3 is incredibly easy. There is an access panel, and any 2.5" SATA hdd fits the bill. I've got a 250GB hdd in mine, but I find that I barely use any of it, because streaming media is just so easy.
With the new 2.40 xmb, having my music on a huge hdd means that I can listen to what I want, and change tracks while in-game.
I like my PS3.
That all being said, I would still love an X360. I've got nothing against it, it is a popular and fun console. The price-drop here in Australia makes it cheaper then a Wii, which is good. I really really love the look of Fable 2, I'm a huge Lionhead fan. Maybe by the time that game drops, the street price of a X360 will drop again!
Most people do know that fact.
Me? I haven't even got one for my 360.
In the UK all that is available is the odd demo, and arcade of course - but arcade games like Rez I have on my DC and old Megadrive/Genesis games I already have too.
Almost none of the movies in the US marketplace are available to us over the pond, I just simply don't have a need for a hard drive - at least not the extortionate price they charge us. We pay $50 more for the 20GB hard drive.
I'll get one someday... When the open Marketplace up to the international market...
Amen Kyle. I love my 360 to death but boy did Sony take the right path when it comes to storage on their system.
@Will H.:
I'm with you. I would love to get a 360, I just feel for what you get, it's a very expensive system. I've heard nothing but bad things about the quality of the hardware, from the vacuum sounding DVD drive to the malfunctioning GPU. The $50 a year multiplayer and the locked down hardware(HDD).
It just seems like a very expensive and risky proposition.
If I buy just because it's an uber gaming system. At $349, compare to the Wii, it's expensive. And compared the the PS3 it's not as cutting edge.
^ yeah, but sticking to your PS3.. means you missing out on the best console (360), games, and way better media entertainment than PS3 network has to offer.
*I just downloaded Siren demo from PS Network.. what shity controls!
You post about how the 360's better than the PS3, yet all you have to say is that you didn't like the controls for the Siren demo? Lame.
You know, perhaps I could respect your comment if you put an IMO cue somewhere in there (In your opinion)
i was hoping the elite would drop to $399 :/
the elite has already drooped to 399.99.
Go to www.amazon.com and you will find the 360 elite marked down by
$50 to 399.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well sunuvabitch. :)
with free shipping, i wonder if ill get it before gears of war 2 comes out. Thanks Vince.
Didnt take long for the fanboy war to start...
It all started at July 13 2008 on Engadget.com, the most pitiful war ever...
GET A LIFE FOOLS!

you should see the other threads - about iPhone........
Obviously neither system can compete with the graphics and gameplay of Monkey Ball on the iPhone.
Well, NONE of the above can compare to Snake II on my Nokia 3360.
Well, NONE of the above can compare to Snake II on my Nokia 3360.
@kyle I don't have prove the Xbox 360 is better than PS3. It just is! My display name says it all. :P
FYI- my name is a 5yr old 360 gamertag. Damn did I predict the future back then, or what!
How did you predict the future?
that the 360 didn't go belly up?
cua i think anybody could've told you that. if you'll notice, so far none of the consoles have done badly.
let me predict your future:
You will die alone.
"I don't have prove the Xbox 360 is better than PS3. It just is! "
He's got to be a little kid.
Little dude, if you like your XBox, then great. Why do you have to be such a dink about other platforms. Grow up man.
@MMistereo
nice triumph the insult comic dog reference...well if you were that is haha, but it made me laugh
This makes even more difficult to make a decision of whether to buy the PS3 or the XBox360. I really want to play MGS4 and I'm sure God of War 3 is going to be a great game. But then again Gears of War 2 is coming out later this year........I'll have to wait for E3 to see if Sony announces a price drop for the PS3.
Sony made it clear that they won't drop PS3 prices for now.
Have you seen the latest Killzone 2 vid ? That will make you urge to buy a PS3 more. :)
I love my PS3 but is it really necessary to bring it into the comments? This is about the 360. I have to send mine back in but the thought of a 60 gig is promising. These potshots at each other really need to stop.
@xavi
Sony will not be lowering the price of the PS3.. Infact I have a valueable source saying they will discontinue the 40Gig PS3 Model (cheapest one) 3rd/4th quater of this year as well.
Yeah if you combine all the rumors, Sony Japan said they're not going to lower the price. However, SCEJ doesn't speak for SCEA, meaning we could still have a price drop.
As I'm sure what you're quoting for a "source" is that Walmart memo that was leaked a few days ago that said the 40GB is to be replaced. It's obviously another SKU but another SKU doesn't mean another harddrive size. They could simply decide to bundle in another game or put in a dualshock 3 instead of sixaxis.
The MGS4 and Motorstorm 80GB packs are different SKUs, as are the 40GB Movie pack and 40GB GT5P pack in Europe. Nothing different about the system, just the pack ins.
I wonder if this new SKU is a redesign model?
would nice to get a PS3 but i want to wait till a slim version is out?
yeah to be replaced with a new 40GB SKU that has a dual shock 3 controller with it....like the 80GB bundle does already
Xbox 360 Premium $349
Xbox Live $50
Wireless Adapter $99
Total: $498
PS3(wireless built in, free multiplayer, oh yah teh bluray) $399
Total: $399
Whose ripping who off?
So is the 60gb getting any hardware updates, like those new processors I hear people talking about? Or is it simply just a new 60gb harddrive?
Just a new HDD. Jasper units are still 6 months away.
By the time they come out with the Jasper, most people like myself who have been waiting for a silent and reliable 360 will have moved on to the PS3.
so is this going to be officialy on E3 july 15, or something different? I was hoping for an Arcade pricecut, but might go for the 60G if it's reasonable
Its really depressing to read all the fanboy comments every time a story is published about 360's or PS3's.
Really... anyone who has posted here slagging off the other other console or trying to trumpet why there own is better is nothing but a lame retard.
I also hate the way that both console companies have used HD size as a distinguishing factor between their console variations. In the PC world, the cost difference between HD's is minimal, especially when you can pick up 250GB drives for peanuts these days.
60GB in the 360 is welcome (for those that want to watch movies on it... as gamers would never fill it).
I have a PS3 and also want to get a 360 to go with it so that I can have the best of both worlds. Still waiting for a refresh though where MS can put hand on heart and say 'we've fixed all the heating and reliability problems... no more RROD'. When this happens, I'll gladly pick one up. I dont think this revision is the one though.
Recent revisions are more reliable, there is no doubt about that... but I still read far too many stories on forums about the latest revisions STILL getting RROD.
I think the only way Microsoft will ever completely clean up from the RRoD disaster would be to remove the Ring of Light from their consoles. I think it brings too many bad memories for too many people..
Also, you can't have a red ring of death if there aren't any red rings now, can you? ;)
While everyone else is talking about crap, why not talk about if this is the 'Jasper' revision some people have been waiting for? I'm still a bit reluctant in buying another one since my first Xbox 360 (manufactured 3-6-06) went RROD in just 6 months.
If this is the new model with the 55 nm GPU, I'm getting this and hopefully I won't have to worry about it breaking down again. I heard some Falcon units still went RROD which is why I'm excited for the Jasper units to arrive.
same here, i've been waiting since december to make sure that when I buy an xbox i can be pretty damn sure it wont rrod on me right away.
I still see no proof, this looks like FURTHER speculation.
Well, this price drop can only help to stir a little more competition into the console arena, which ultimately means that the consumer wins. Let's just hope that it doesn't go too far and bankrupt any of the players (RIP SEGA).
I might go dust off my Japanese Dreamcast now and play some Soul Calibur. I swear, I've spent way more time and had WAY more fun with my DC than my 360... not that I don't love Halo :P
No...the consumer doesn't win (w/ RROD's in their systems). Especially if the customer buy more of the same to replace it and have it fixed and refixed. Kind of makes you wonder if there is a lemon law concerning 360s. I know the lemon law only applies to automobiles but come on, if the reports be true about constant failures of 360s then shouldn't their be a lemon law for 360s?
This reminds me of the 60GB PS3 sale around E3 last year. It's not a price drop, it's a "clearance."
Sony tried to play erveryone as a fool and tried to make it sound like a legit price drop and not a clearence.
Microsoft on the othe hand, clearly states they they are increasing the HDD capacity for the same $350 price and the reduction in 20GB model is "while supplies last". (i.e., a clearance)
"The company today announced an Xbox 360® console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price"..."In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last"
Sony has a long history of not being upfront with the consumers... they are an untrustwothy company.
wait a minute, you paid money for "Fool's Gold"???
and I'm supposed to feel sorry for you?
I bought a 40GB PS3 for this price last month, at the Walmart deal.
I really don't understand why anyone would buy a 360, it's not reliable, and the games appear to have reached their limits a long time back, witrh Gears2 looking like Gears1.
Nothing against the PS3, but with the Xbox 360, I've got a larger selection of games. Not all of them are just, it's just that I feel better with more choices at hand. I've got more than a dozen games for my 360, which is dead and which is why I'm excited to know if this is in fact the newer Xbox 360 revision with 55 nm GPU. I only have GT5 Prologue, MGS4 and Motorstorm for my PS3. I would have bought some of the cross platform games like GRID since my 360's dead but I figured I'd eventually get another one since most of my mates have XBL instead of PSN.
I'm still waiting for GT5, Killzone 2 and FFXIII though. Just wondering when they'll arrive... But unlike most people, I've got my eyes straight on GT5. The car collection thing got me addicted ever since GT1 on the PS1.
All the new motherboard/heatsink combos have pretty much eliminated the RROD.
I guess it's preference, but have alook at the 'top games' for x360 on gamespot, far more games a the moment rated well
I would love to buy me an XBOX 360 if I could have proof that the new unit that is shipping in August will be a totally redesigned, RROD-proof system.
Those of you who got a bad system got ripped. You guys have no choice. You'll take it and like it. You're already invested and you have too much into it too bail.
Still the NEW Premium should be $299. This clearance crap is bull.
Do I really need a bigger box?
All these insignificant comments, trying to make your selves believe you have the better end of the bargain, as a person with both console since day 1, I could say both consoles have paid there dues, 360 might be at its limits but I still find my self poring in more hours into it a day than my ps3 infact ration wise its around 10:1. I was a ps2 fan but now the ps3 really isnt serving me any adiquate online experience.
Get both and stop the idiotic comments. Had both since Day 1 and never looked back. When the next ones come out I'll get those also. Just getting one is setting yourself up for failure. Just my opinion.
I wonder how much they're going to charge for the 60gb drive? Probably $149.99. So $99=20GB, $149.99=60GB, $179.99=120GB. Those sound more like Apple prices.Silly M$, when are they going to learn.
concerning the systems, if you ask me..
The PC, the 360, and the PS3 are, more or less, equal. In the terms of game selection, they're all currently fairly terrible, offering, generally speaking, the same kind of experiences.
Lots of multiplayer, relaxed single player content, and a whole lot less variety than ever before.
The PS3 has the best eastern support.
The PC has the better independent games.
and the 360 is like a combo of those.
AS for the Wii, it's even worse.
This gen is a horrible, horrible thing. Unvaried, slow paced, and multiplayer shooting is taking over across the board, and everything is being nickle and dimed.
I miss the PS2. God, what a great system. That has at least 50 great games, and probably around 100 good ones... all fitting with so many genres.
Hell, in it's first two years, it had a better selection games multiples better than anything on the PS3, Wii, or 360 right now. Well, unless about all you care about is HD visuals and teh multiplayer shootan.
What do you need a larger 360 HDD for? Are you honestly going to pay for and download that much content. You can already plug in an external hardrive to keep your entire video and music collection right on the 360. I've got hundreds of movies and thosands of songs at my fingertips with an external drive through the 360s USB. This is a standard feature no hacking needed!
is the price cut for US only?
price of a 360 = 1/3 of mac mini... yumm...
"We just had to delete August Rush to make room for National Treasure 2, which we'll probably have to drop tomorrow for Fool's Gold."
I see what you did there. But those really are all awful movies.
That's the joke.
I'm gonna wait and save up for the next generation of the XBOX which will be in 2-3 and I predict it will cost between $499-$599 :P
i could be wrong but haven't they fixed the over heating problem with the new 360's (hdmi ones)
I have a 360 and love it, but i almost sold it when MGS4 came out. But glad i didn't for gears 2.
Wow the elite really is $400 on amazon.
National Treasure 2??!! Please tell me that is a joke? That movie certainly was. Yes, I saw it, and I don't think I have ever so thoroughly wasted $10. My god, man.
What did your 360 do to you that could be so bad that you would inflict NT2 upon it??
Will this new 60gb 360 have the cooler 65mn video card???
does anyone know if the stand-alone hard drives (20 & 120gb) will see price reductions?
Hey guys, that 20 gig Hard Drive that's in the Pro 360 now isn't 20 gigs, it's actually about 13 gigs if I remember when you delete all the junk they put in there.
a few people above mentioned it, but thought i would comment again.
Does anyone know or can they confirm if these new Xbox 360's with 60gb hard drive will be the new "Jasper" series.
Rumor back when said "Jaspers" would be coming out August '08.
"Jasper" consists of a new motherboard layout with most importantly the ATI graphics chip being shrunk to 65nm and the memory chips on the motherboard will also be smaller.

Buy a PS3 if you like mostly single player games and really have no friends,
Buy a Xbox360 if you like mostly multiplayer games and really have only gay friends,
or for true gamers don't hesitate to buy an Alienware PC.
Better yet if your IQ is above 75 build a sweet PC gaming machine that will decimate all the wannabe gamer console fanboy homos.
Don't hate me because I'm right.
Buy the 360 if you like to listen to homophobic and racist people on XBOX LIVE get their groove on.
I'm good with my 20GB, as I tend to just run the music off my iPod anyways and keep all my other media through my linked PC. this is great news for anyone else trying to jump onto the 360 gaming wagon. Kinda wish I hopped on the disco'ed PS3s when those happenend.
This finally convinced me to pull the trigger on a 360...
Buy.com has a 5% coupon apply that to the $299 system with the free budget shipping, and no tax... $284 can't beat that!
Here's the coupon if someone needs it:
http://www.buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=84773074
I have both systems, and I admit that the ps3 has more things like blue ray and internet, but in my opinion for a person who loves to play games there is nothing like the 360. I only use my ps3 most of the time for just blue rays and to play mgs4.
how can all the data from those 20GB hard drives be transferred over to the more appealing 60GB ones?
