Apple says turn-by-turn GPS coming to iPhone, copy / paste not a high priority
There's been a lot of random misinformation about the iPhone 3G floating around out there, like David Pogue's baffling comment that the device's GPS antenna is "too small" to support turn-by-turn directions, and Apple's iPod and iPhone marketing head Greg Joswiak recently sat down with AppScout to clear up some of the confusion. Greg says that Apple has an internal priority list of features for the iPhone, and that the company went as far down the list with the 3G as it could -- and that copy / paste support simply didn't make the cut. Similarly, there are no technical issues preventing turn-by-turn directions, just other "complicated issues" (read: legal agreements) that need to be sorted out, and Josiwak expects developers to "amaze us." as things "evolve." Hopefully that means that nav app TomTom's got in the labs will evolve its way into the wild sometime soon. Finally, Joswiak said that he's not aware of any technical reasons an office suite isn't already in the App Store, but that the lack of a cross-application file structure could impede development. Yeah, and maybe the lack of copy / paste, you think?

Can't wait until the iPhone can tell me to " Turn right in 100 feet."
But what's up with the sloppy photoshop? Seriously.
Its just an edited picture from the one they used on Friday the 13th last month.
You can still see the Jason mask on the button.
If you're eagerly awaiting inanimate objects to talk to you, you might want to go see the nice gentlemen in white coats. They have a new jacket for you.
would you prefer your iPhone to say that in a male or female voice?
def. going to need copy and paste etc. for office suite if it comes.
1st post? maybe....
To bad there isnt a post 'cut' function
Bunch of whiners!! I'm sure lo-rank me because....?
Here come the dumb-ass comments everyone, you watch this now..
Improve your grammar please.
hmmm Apple...??? WTF is wrong with them... its like microsoft coming out with next version of windows without the enter key... how effin stupid
You're going to get low ranked because immature children get upset about such harmless stuff. I get a chuckle when the first commenter types "FIRST", because I know it gets the following posters annoyed for no reason at all.
Honestly, what difference does it make after seeing it done so many times. It's even funnier when the commenter types "FIRST" only to be second or third.
Next time use something like "Leader of the pack" or "I'm #1" or "Follow the leader" just to change the pace.
That is a cool feature that many phones are getting these days. Take a look at some other cool GPS tracking devices. These can track people and you can even view the data on the iPhone. How cool is that?
I don't know about the rest of you, but I think I would prefer copy/paste of tyrn by turn GPS
Exactly.
If Copy/Paste isn't a high priority, then Apple needs to make it one. What is so difficult about storing a text string into memory? If someone texts me an address or some name I need to remember I'd like to copy it into an email somehow. It's something everyone, even the soccer moms, will want to do at some point.
If apple really has some of the best design team/engineers in the world, it's time to master copy-fucking-paste.
I'm a long time first-gen iPhone owner and I have yet to purchase the 3g. My *primary* hesitation, is lack of copy and paste. I've been considering switching to a different phone after my contract expires for two reasons:
- camera quality should be at least 3 megapixels
- copy and paste is a necessity
Agreed! It's not a technological challenge.
And, while we're on it, what does Apple have against tasks and notes applications that sync? It's like they've never used a PDA before. Why did they even bother with the notes that doesn't sync? For me, entering a note into that app is like farting in the wind.
Those are two basic, and necessary PIM apps that every other mainstream PDA/Smartphone has offered.
@ Nate Chatellier
why does everyone want more megapixels? i'll take higher quality optics over megapixels anyday.
i wish people understood the things they mean to say instead of not understanding what they do say.
Forget priorities. What the hell are they doing over there that they can't do copy/paste? They could get a freaking intern to code and test it in less than a week. It's pathetic that a company full of top-notch engineers can't bang out some code that should only take them a few hours to complete.
You guys are right, we all need copy & paste, soon.
but in the mean time, with firmware 2.0, if you quickly press the home and sleep buttons together when viewing ANYTHING, it will take a screenshot of it and save it to your pictures.
it's the nearest to copy & paste we're gonna get any time soon m'afraid
It's not a question of the difficulty of programming copy/paste, it's completely reworking the UI; you're adding two more gestures. You'd need to do something like "hold with one finger, tap with another" for copy and "hold with one finger, tap with two others" for paste. And it gets even more complicated for copying text from something where like a website: how exactly are you supposed to highlight the text? Hold with two fingers and slide another to select?
My point is, it's not as simple to implement copy/paste on a touch based system as one might think.
yeah everyone knows you need 4G to support copy and paste
No, everyone really knows you need 5G support, or is it LTE, or WiMax?
Yea, just like you need an iPhone 3G for the App Store and Exchange support, right?
This isn't WinMo: Mobile OSX is flexible enough to allow people to upgrade the software on their existing phones.
@KarlW
WTF are you smoking? You certainly can add new applications to a WinMo phone when you want and you don't have to do it from the manufacturers official store. Half the time you don't even need a PC to sync to install it either.
@kal326
I want you to open up a dictionary (big fat book, lots of words with their meanings) and look up the following word:
SARCASM
Don't understand why copy & paste is not high-priority enough... so many ppl have been screaming for it.
Apparently not as much as Exchange Support and Third Party Apps, which I gotta tell you, are a lot more important to me ;)
Are people connecting to WPA(2) networks with an iPhone? Who is gonna key in one of those passwords?
Not having copy and paste is very frustrating. Instead we get a scientific calculator.
we will see both of these soon :)
Bye bye winmobile/treo
:)
As if sales = best product? Is that your argument? Blueberry Imac's sold like hotcakes too...lol Cmon, I admit the iphone is the king in terms of mass market mainstream appeal. But do these users know anything? No. They are idiots. The amount of things I can do on my mogul simply dwarfs the limited functionality of even the new 3G iphone. Serious users with tons of software, apps, tweaks & hacks can be pinned down with the limited functionality of the iphone. It has a LONG way to go and all the other phone makers are now coming out with phones with equal or greater screen real estate, visuals and aesthetic appeal.
lol goon you must be an anti-apple guy cuz phone makers are still years behind apple's osx iPhone operating system. Try it before you bash it dude
lol goon you must be an anti-apple guy cuz phone makers are still years behind apple's osx iPhone operating system. Try it before you bash it dude"
All of them are pretty equal. The only real difference are transitions between different screens and maybe some UI choices, and in the end that is a matter of personal taste whether that makes a big difference to you.
Other than that, they all do the same thing more or less.
@ g00n
Let's see, would I rather be a company that sells the hottest piece of electronic equipment, limited in functionality or not, on the planet to millions of 'idiots' (as you say) or the company that sells devices that admittedly have greater functionality yet offer nothing close in user experience and which most people couldn't identify if their life depended on it. Mmmm....let me think about that. Must have had to wait a long time to get your hands on that Mogul because of the demand for all of those features.
The Mogul certainly offers more features. I used to have a Tilt, another device that in fact kicked the crap out of your Mogul and I dumped that POS (note, 2 devices failed completely) for a iPhone--the user experience isn't even close.
You also need to come to grips with the fact that the vast majority of users aren't tech geekheads like yourself and could give a s$%t about the iPhone's limitations. Most people aren't interested in anything past being a media player, email/internet (easily best mobile internet), and phone.
The Tilt sucked! No drivers, the MAGICIAN worked better than it.
Everyone in the world could use Copy and Paste and MMS. 3G has limited coverage.
MMS? Seriously why not send an email, I don't know anyone (at least in my line of work) that uses MMS instead of our corporate email. I even email my mother pictures (or send her a link to my mobileme gallery)
I wish we had copy/paste, but i really cant see it being used that much by me. It'd be an nice feature, but not exactly necessary.
BTW To the dipshit who said "no serious power users use the iphone", my company (over 500 employees) has promised us all brand new 3g iphones 8gb to hook up to our exchange server to get our business done and be able to access all our contacts on the go.
I see your point, manny. If Apple's highest priority was increasing their corporate user base, then they had their priorities straight. MMS is more heavily used by non-business users.
because my wife won't check her email every 5 seconds, and an mms will notify her.
As it is, I tend to send her an email, followed by an SMS telling her to check her email.
Its still strange to think there is no MMS for me because i thought Apple would want to appeal to as many people as they can and MMS seems to be a cheap and simple way to do that. I've just been assuming Apples wants to do away with MMS because they want everyone to use email on their phones.
There were 3 things keeping me from buying an iphone... one was addressed with the 3G (GPS), and the other two were MMS and copy/paste. I don't have 3G where I live. I find it ironic that the iPhone 3G addressed the hardware shortfall (GPS) but after so much time, and iphone 2.0 software, i still can't do copy paste or send an MMS! I don't get it. Apple isn't going to try to sell me another new one next summer just to add copy/paste or mms are they... I'd stay away out of pure spite at that point! Seriously! How can turn by turn driving, which is inherently dangerous in nature, be a higher priority than MMS or copy/paste?! I just don't understand. I'm so confused!!!
Yeah, my parents never check their e-mail and would appreciate a MMS/Picture Message from time to time.
A lot of my friends don't have their e-mail linked to their phones and it was always nice to send a photo from the bar or baseball game or something and be able to get a reply right away, not the next morning when they're at work.
I'm also confused with the photo/e-mail function on my iPhone 3G. Can I NOT send more than one photo in an e-mail?
As another point of view.
We here in South Africa use MMS lots. And its pretty annoying to us that they didnt include it, especially seems as they are going to be marketing the phone here "soon"
Oh, and if any Apple guys are wondering:
Dim clipString as String = txtCurrentLocation.Text
Clipboard.SetDataObject(clipString)
;)
lol @ copy & paste a high priority...
all you idiot apple fanbois make me sick. iphones are for kiddos and emo trendwhores. Anyone who does serious tech tasks or uses business related software wouldn't be caught dead with an iphone. No self respecting tech or gadget enthusiast can truly say the iphone is the best choice unless are are stubborn or ill informed.
The hTC Mogul w/ Sprint SERO is unlimited data, text, & tethering on EVDO rev 1 for $30/month. You simply cant beat this phone and this price for data service. You can way whatever you want...
hTC Touch Pro is on the horizon as well... these are real phones for real users. Leave the iphones to the soccer moms and dipshits.
The End.
yeah but word is SERO's on the cutting block, eh?
LOL@goon
Lol.. That's all I can say :)
The iphone has already outsold any other direct competition.
amen!
Nice words !
Who gives a sweaty vagina whether or not the iphone outsold those other devices? While the iphone isn't as horrible as g00n makes it sound, Apple's mobile devices unit has never been able to design good hardware.
Apple's strength has always been marketing....not engineering.
I wouldn't call em dipshits per se, but the uninformed masses are usually the ones who buy Apple...trendwhores too.
I've never seen a true gadget head or engineer try an apple product more than once before realizing that the word according to JOBS is mostly crap.
Erik and other closeted fanboys: Your devotion to Apple (aka a corporation) is fucking weird. Stop. Its only electronics.
Please geek out till the point of nausea over something else. Sweaty vaginas for example....
I use to think like you, until I realised you don't buy a phone based on what the spec sheet says, you have to experience them for yourself.
The iphone's strength is it's diverse appeal, a diverse appeal crafted through a ui that is years ahead of competitors, it may be easy to use and simple in it's look but we know it has powerful underpinnings.
To expand on that, people can use it in their own way, it appeals to different markets well, can you say many Windows Mobile phones do that?
I totally agree. The only people I know who have an iPhone are the posers who aren't even tech savvy enough to use any more than 10% of the features on a modern handset. None of the serious techies I know would go near one.
The Apple crowd are like religious nuts; they fervently adhere to completely irrational and unfounded opinions and make no reference whatsoever to reality. Steve Jobs is their David Koresh, making them believe the iPhone is something other than just an expensive, but ultimately useless toy, since it lacks so many fundamentally vital features.
I think g00n's post wraps up the iPhone completely and nothing more needs to be said.
LOL!
Sounds like some people are jelouse of apple's new mobile computer/phone :)
Hm. I own a software company and manage it from my iPhone when out of office. Used to do BB but love the iPhone. What do you know about serious business users? Are you one yourself?
I think people who actually type "fanbois" should have their nuts cut out and shoved down their throats.
What? They don't have nuts?
Nevermind.
This message is for g00n. We are designing a turn by turn gps software with tomtom, MMS will soon follow closely behind, and also within the firmware code are commands for "cut," "copy" and "paste." While this does not guarantee the functionality will immediately appear -- we have been known oftentimes to add coding in well before a feature is actually implemented -- it certainly suggests copy and paste is on the way.
Nevertheless, remember that the iPhone is only a platform or foundation to build on (like building a house and adding on to it). What other cell phone you that can do this? The iPhone is years ahead of other mobile products. We may not have the features that you are looking for now, but it will come with just a firmware upgrade... Oh! Did I mention that won't have to even change your mobile phone. LOL.... For someone that so computer savvy you're so behind in technology. I'd advise you to upgrade your knowledge prior to upgrading you mobile phone...
Jason sighting!
Man, I know people's experiences vary, but I can't see what all the bitching is about. I owned a Dell Axim for three years and used the copy/paste feature exactly twice, both times for complex URLs which the iPhone hyperlinks automatically. Sure it's nice to have, but I can't believe it's a total deal-breaker.
COPY AND PASTE is important. I can't believe it was that low on the list.
the first iPhone didn't have 3G or GPS when those functions been around for the last 3-4 years on other (cheaper) phones. now the new iPhone 3G has it?! yes, they are behind. maybe the next iPhone will have the copy and paste function
no copy and paste? FAIL.
*waits for apple fanboys to start they nasty, wordy, funny, utterly pointless responses*
Palm OS has it, WM has it, the Psion pda's had it. apple is really behind... but don't worry, they will release a new version with added "features"(things it should have had to start with) (probably charge for it too.)
*waits for apple fanboys to start they nasty, wordy, funny, utterly pointless responses*
I am almost 100% sure I will get low, or lowest rank for that comment.
i'm sure there's a useful comment buried somewhere behind your repetition and trolling but i'm too lazy to find out
No. There's not, phanboy.
Are we pissing him off for high ranking him, or just succumbing to his reverse psychology?
SHIT!
No, I think he just made a valid point.
I'm more curious about MMS then I am copy and paste. Compared to MMS I agree that its low on the list. Someone needs to ask about that, and why its not available. I still haven't heard a good apple response to that.
Greatttt news, can't wait for turn by turn directions especially with the loud speaker it has now and I can't equally wait for copy & paste.
What? The new iPhone doesn't have turn-by-turn GPS? What's the point of having a GPS then?
Also, I don't see what the big problem is for Apple to throw in basic features like copy-and-paste, MMS, etc. This is supposed to be the "coolest" and "best" phone out there.. so where are these features? Even my Verizon dumbphone has copy and paste.
The most annoying part is how everyone is like "oh, ok" when Apple leaves out critical features, but if it were Microsoft, LG, Verizon, or any other company they would be heavily criticized as not being able to get anything right.
CoreLocation. Part of the iPhone API that allows any app to utilize the GPS (and cell triangulation on 1st gen iPhones). There are apps for the iPhone that will tell you what restaurants are near you based on your location, for example. Exposure is an app that will search Flickr for photos taken near where you are.
Obviously MMS is not a critical feature. The iPhone has email. Push, pull, Exchange or otherwise. You can attach pictures to email, and here's the kicker - EVERYBODY has email. NOT everybody has MMS. As far as copy and paste, Apple didn't say they were leaving it out. They said it was lower on the priority list. I'd say GPS, 3G and the apps are definitely higher priorities than copy and paste, wouldn't you? I haven't wanted to copy and paste more than a couple times over the last 8 months or so, myself. Not that big a deal to me.
You're stupid if you think the iPhone doesn't have it's critics.
"The most annoying part is how everyone is like "oh, ok" when Apple leaves out critical features, but if it were Microsoft, LG, Verizon, or any other company they would be heavily criticized as not being able to get anything right."
Well yes, as you can see the line that "bah, no one needs copy and paste that much..." is flying fast and furious. It is because Apple said so and nothing else. Just like 3G wasnt that big a deal nor was 3rd party apps for some.
I write many emails on my WM5 ipaq and God knows I need C&P several times a day. How on earth can you do serious business like spreadsheets and reports without that?!? You have to type the whole thing out over and over again.
Saying you dont need copy and paste is like saying that Win Mobile doesn't need a task manager. And at least with that I can download a 3rd party utility that takes care of that!
i have an iphone and i completely agree with you. apple needs to get their heads out fo their asses. how can copy/paste and mms not be high priorities? is that a joke? i would use both those features at least 5-10 times a day. its such a basic function my blood just boils when apple acts as if it doesnt matter.
/rant
Cut and Paste is far too simplistic to trouble the almighty Apple developers. But that whiz-bang weather app sure is handy! Maybe it's time for Apple to listen about what features people really want?
You mean like 3G? Or have you forgotten all the whining about that over the last year? If you ask me, I'd say Apple did address the features that were highest in demand. But Apple haters are never satisfied, are they?
I hope Apple doesn't add copy/paste functionality. The whole concept of the clipboard is ancient and cumbersome... There has to be a better way to implement it.
this is such CRAP! copy/paste is low on a "priority list?"
also, where there only two or three things on that list for the new iphone?
3g? check
gps? check
...scientific calculator? oh yea, check!
how about the laundry list of other missing features that everyone knows already? i mean really, what has apple been doing this last year? they couldn't have found it in their massive budget to hire one more guy and give him a year to work out copy/paste? how 'bout another guy whose only job for a year is to get MMS on a phone that's "years ahead" of anything else?
Right, because 3rd party apps isn't something people wanted. Yes, copy and paste is lower on the list than 3rd party apps, 3G and GPS. But you just have to complain about something, don't you?
are you freaking kidding me? third party apps are THIRD PARTY! thanks, apple, for making a remote and a poker game. sincerely. texas hold 'em is more of a priority than copy/paste.
i mean come on! you weren't the least bit disappointed when you watched the keynote?
Copy & Paste: July 2010
3.5G: June 2011
Video Recording: July 2013
32 GB: July 2013
2014-2016: The whole Apple world is in shock after Jobs sudden death.
5 MP Camera: June 2017
MMS: July 2018
lol
it already has 3.5G (HSDPA).
You're not giving Jon Ive enough credit really... I'm sure the man is just praying for Jobso to be out of the picture once and for all.
And lets face it, Jonny-boy is Jobso's fair-haired boy.
For me, MMS is far more important than copy/paste
Doesn't MMS cost like 50 cent a pop?
And for a second there I thought there would be a WHOLE day with out an iphone post!
They will never have memory expansion. If they don't even have a user replaceable battery what makes you think they are going to put some ugly hole in the side of this beautiful device for memory expansion. They have never put memory expansion into any iPod or anything before so why would they start now?
I think it's more than just figuring out how to "put the text in memory". What gestures would you use to copy/paste and how could you implement it without changing existing behavior? The normal thing would be to hold your finger down and "swipe" across the text you want to copy. Well, that gesture already used to navigate around pages. I think it's more of a stylistic issue than a technical one.
This is no excuse... "we haven't figured out how to implement it yet". Give me a damn break, they've had 2 years to do this, and they have a multi-touch device which can accept dual screen input signals. I bet I could figure this out in about 1/2 day if I sat down and did it. What a cop-out. Isn't UI supposed to be Apple's #1 thing that they're good at? And they're claiming they can't figure out a way to do this? Either they're lying about that, or they'll NEVER figure it out. Just how frigging long does it take to figure out something like that anyways?
I suspect you're correct. Remember how Jobs declared the keyboard and stylus a "bad thing" at the launch of the original iPhone - that touch and the fingertip was the only way to go.
Well that backs you into a corner when a fingertip proves to be a difficult way to select a range accurately - you should be able to multi-touch start and end but maybe that's not so easy - then you have to determine what you're cut, copy and paste gestures should be. Or implement a pop up/pull down menu.
At this point the only reason not to have it is because it would be a kludge that the design religion will not allow.
I also don't understand why Cut, Copy and Paste were not added to 2.0, as working with business users was part of the goal. Anyway, so many "normal user" cases when it is needed: transfer results from calculator onto an email; copy from an email to an sms; copy from note-taking to an email; reformatting emails. Copy badly formatted phone numbers from SMSs or emails onto your contact list. I'm not even talking about bringing in Word, Excell, ppt, etc, functionality. Also, I am not technical but, apart from the "look and feel" issue of no drop menus on the iPhone, it would seem not a difficult thing to do. Palms had it from day one.
...and WPA keys
Nice Screen Grab of Boise Idaho!
Can you save images from the web using an iphone?
Apple seems to also do something a bit different that annoys people and they never budge. such as the non-removable battery in the ipods or the expandable memory, or built in radio. it seems like MMS and copy/paste may fall in that category.
MMS is a big reason why I wouldnt be able to use the iPhone as much as i would like. only a few people i know can look at email email on their phones, everyone can get MMS... It seems like Apple had some sort of directive by not including MMS on their phone.
Yes, you can save images from the web with the new 2.0 software. You simply tap and hold on the image.
Expandable memory was always on everyone wish lists, but then you wouldn't have to pay a premium for their iPods with larger storage! Apple would lose money if you could use whatever size storage card you wanted even if it costs you less. They decide the usability of their products and Apple is pretty tight about it.
Here's what the 3g needs most:
-push gmail (this is google's fault, not apple's)
-copy/paste
-ability to auto-download subscribed podcasts over wifi without plugging into itunes (why else have an itunes app on the phone?)
-mms, because not everyone has email on their phone yet, and they have a hard time figuring out how to send me pics otherwise
-turn by turn gps nav
Are you joking about not having a batter and expansion slot because it would make the product less beautiful?
What about hands-free calling? That's kind of a big oversight considering all the hands-free laws going into effect around the country. That's sort of the biggest flaw with the iPhone as far as I can tell (that, and the crappy "fuzzy/pixelated" photo viewer).
I don't get your comment. it has a speakerphone and it has bluetooth to sync with handsfree devices, so how does it not do handsfree?
This was my thought exactly when I discovered the hard way that the iPhone does not support hands free calling.
Chicksta: You cant actually _make_ the call handsfree. Yes, you can touch the screen a couple of times, find the contact you want to call, then talk using speakerphone or headset. But imagine doing all of that while driving.
What he means is that it needs calling by voice command, even my five year old Sony Ericsson does that, but not my iPhone 3G. Not that I would ever use the feature anyways, because I rarely drive. But other people do.
Well, 'voice-activated dialing' != handsfree. I call people from the touchscreen on my car anyways (it has voice commands, I just don't use them), but it seems like something that'd come out in an app or firmware update, just like copy/paste could, or MMS, or any of these other non-hardware-dependent-but-software-upgradeable features. So why is that a big deal? Even video recording is doable via apps, so really the only -phone- upgrades I see later on will be for storage capability and the camera (esp. a front-facing one).
How about the ability to recognize something as an address, like it does with phone numbers.
