Apple says turn-by-turn GPS coming to iPhone, copy / paste not a high priority
There's been a lot of random misinformation about the iPhone 3G floating around out there, like David Pogue's baffling comment that the device's GPS antenna is "too small" to support turn-by-turn directions, and Apple's iPod and iPhone marketing head Greg Joswiak recently sat down with AppScout to clear up some of the confusion. Greg says that Apple has an internal priority list of features for the iPhone, and that the company went as far down the list with the 3G as it could -- and that copy / paste support simply didn't make the cut. Similarly, there are no technical issues preventing turn-by-turn directions, just other "complicated issues" (read: legal agreements) that need to be sorted out, and Josiwak expects developers to "amaze us." as things "evolve." Hopefully that means that nav app TomTom's got in the labs will evolve its way into the wild sometime soon. Finally, Joswiak said that he's not aware of any technical reasons an office suite isn't already in the App Store, but that the lack of a cross-application file structure could impede development. Yeah, and maybe the lack of copy / paste, you think?

Question: How many Apple employees does it take to implement copy/paste into the iPhone?
Answer: More than 17,787 full-time and 2,399 temporary.
Question: Now, how much money for research and development does it take?
Answer: More than $782,000,000 yearly.
I love how Apple rations out "features" like food during World War II.
Sorry am i the only one missing the point here? Whats the biggie about copy/paste being a priorty, for what usage? What about Forwarding jokes on via sms, thats more important which i still cannot do! But like all these problems a majority can be solved in future firmware releases. I guess Apple needs to save something for version 2.1.
I must say when Apple announced the 'second' rate gps inside, i thought it would be another N95, but having it on during various trips it is surprising accute, and very fast to switch on. I have no doubt that TomTom has a copy of the software running smoothly. If its next version of TomTom 7 though we're all going to be waiting that extra bit longer.
I do hope there will be some kind of Office release for Apps Store, i need a spreadsheet of somekind on-the-go.
This will allow Apple to make a nice "marketing" event when they come with the software upgrade! :)
Anyway I am convinced that Mobile (i)Phones with GPS capability will take a significant market share in the car navigation arena!

This message is for g00n. We are designing a turn by turn gps software with tomtom, MMS will soon follow closely behind, and also within the firmware code are commands for "cut," "copy" and "paste." While this does not guarantee the functionality will immediately appear -- we have been known oftentimes to add coding in well before a feature is actually implemented -- it certainly suggests copy and paste is on the way.
Nevertheless, remember that the iPhone is only a platform or foundation to build on (like building a house and adding on to it). What other cell phone you that can do this? The iPhone is years ahead of other mobile products. We may not have the features that you are looking for now, but it will come with just a firmware upgrade... Oh! Did I mention that won't have to even change your mobile phone. LOL.... For someone that so computer savvy you're so behind in technology. I'd advise you to upgrade your knowledge prior to upgrading you mobile phone...
Am I the only one who wants to be able to text in landscape mode. The wider keyboard makes such a difference.
there is a way around it just look below...
Installing iCopy
Installation Using home Mac or PC
If you sync your bookmarks with your iPhone the easiest way to install iCopy is to drag the following link to your bookmarks in Safari then sync them with your iPhone. (Please note: I use Safari and have tested this. I don't believe this will work with Internet Explorer as it limits the length of a URL to about 2000 characters and this is much longer than that.)
Drag This Link To Safari
Installation Directly on iPhone
Please note: It's important to follow these instructions. Just saving the link page as a book mark will not work. You need to edit the bookmark and remove the beginning part. (Step 9 below)
1. Click here to get the application link
2. Click the plus (+) to add a bookmark
3. Click "Save"
4. Click the bookmarks icon to open bookmarks
5. Click "Edit" near the bottom of screen
6. Click on the Copy/Paste bookmark
7. Tap on the URL portion of the page
8. The cursor will be at the end of the URL. Scroll to the beginning of the URL. (See below for tips on this step)
9. Delete everything before the word "javascript" (everything in red below)
http://www.biocow.com/iCopy/link.php?javascript:function%20doBio........
10. Press Return
11. Click "Bookmarks" near the top to return to your bookmarks
12. Click "Done" to exit edit mode
13. Click "Done" to exit bookmarks
The copy past program will be installed. Try it out.
Install the most recent (stable) version of iCopy
Version 1.2 (3-4-2008) - Copy text from text field or most text from page (as long as it's contained in a , , , or tag) or URL to the clipboard for later pasting. Or sent text or URL to a new email. Text sent to email retains HTML formatting.
Version 1.1 - Copy and paste text from text field or URL to a text field or email text or URL (current version)
Version 1.0 - Copy and paste text from text field or URL to a text field
Tips
You need to get to the beginning of the URL to edit part of it. Click and hold on the URL until you get the magnifying loop. Now slide your finger to the left until it's just barely off the page. The URL text should be scrolling now. Keep scrolling until you get to the very beginning. If your finger slips don't tap the URL or you'll go back to the end. Again, click and hold until you get the loop.
When deleting the beginning of the link, again make sure you click and hold to get the loop.
