You hear of this new
iPhone 3G thing? Doing pretty well, or so we hear. Apple says they sold one million of 'em this weekend worldwide, compared to the 74 days it took them to hit one million with the last generation. So far the little bugger has invaded 21 countries, with France next on its hit list on July 17. Oh, and that
App Store isn't doing too bad for itself either, with 10 million downloads so far to iPhone 3Gs, updated iPhones and iPod touches. No breakdown yet on paid apps versus free apps, but Jared is free, and that's all that matters. However, the saddest fact in all of this is that bunches of
suckers enthusiastic fans are queued up at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store
this morning in New York (pictured), showing either a level of devotion to this little plastic bauble, or of complete disregard for their jobs, which is altogether frightening.
[Thanks,
Laura]

What's interesting, is the fact that them only being able to take 6 people at a time assumes that they only have 6 sales reps working on iPhones. This seems like a ridiculously low number of sales force to have committed to this. It would certainly explain the huge delays at the Apple Stores in light of their surplus inventories.
Nick,
Indeed, 6 is really low. Here is another observation from this morning: there was always 1 staff outside greeting those waiting; 2-3 at the counters downstairs (not selling iPhones); and about 4-5 standing around chatting with a couple of customers who were doing something else (safe to say the crowd waiting in line was not pleased). So manpower is not a problem. I'm thinking the problem was more how many computer stations they had that could sign people up to AT&T.
Which mystifies me even more why they can't just ship some phones over to AT&T stores, because Apple still had insane lines up until today, while AT&T stores were scooped clean and hearing crickets by last Saturday.
yeaaaahhh....riiiight..."one million"

The problem is, it's a bad idea to activate iPhone in the Apple store. The next iPhone that comes out, people will do the same thing. When you have people waiting to get activated as well as purchasing it, people will have to wait, therefore lines. It's a no brainer!!
ok so in the photo..... the acadamy bus is my bus... i am from canada and were on a city tour....... so this was kinda a shock when i looked at this post after along day in nyc
i guess my 30+ downloads contributed to the total amount.
I laughed at striked out "suckers"
As of this morning, Tuesday, there's a 4 hour wait at the Chicago Apple Store, with the person on the phone saying there's "as many as possible" people doing activations.
This is just silly. Great call on changing up the iTunes activation system you used the first time around Steve. Way to work it through.
I was excited to get the new iPhone 3G for some of their really great applications that I could download onto my phone (the only reason I wanted the iPhone). However, I hated the extra charges for text messaging and I used to be with T-mobile with a SideKick3 and man... there's nothing I miss more than having my own e-mail on my phone. Now I have to get my mail pushed thru to me. 8(
Other than that- all the applications I can enjoy as well as the touch screen and bigger screen and iPod and faster 3G technology- love it.
Oh- and by the way, I live in MN and at the location I bought my iPhone 3G, they sold out at 10am on July 11th. At the Mall of America- it was... about 6pm on July 11th and there was a very LOOONG line for the iPhone 3G.
The monthly bills with this new 3g iPhone will be exorbitant! To find out how to change carriers to a cheaper one - saving you money in the long run - go to:-
