PSP firmware 4.05 goes live with new visualizers
Sony's official blog says PSP firmware 4.05, out now, contains "other features" in addition to a couple new music visualizers, but it's not clear what they are, apart from a slightly tweaked XMB animation if you've got a wallpaper set up. Go forth and download -- let us know if there's anything earth-shattering in there, won't you?

why do they bother?
just another attempt by Sony to stop a homebrew exploit.
No joke... Ill stick with my 4.01 M33... I'd rather play Pokemon than trip out on visualizations...
if sony keeps releasing this fast then dark_alex will quit! .. again!
For the visualizers, all u gotta do is copy two .prx and one .rco over from the 4.05 update & stay @ 4.01 M33 like the rest of u. LAWL
This didn't really deserve its own post.
oh but the 30 ones about the iPhone 3G where needed?
Nor did your comment (sic).
I think the iPhone is 'everywhere' it's needed.
People should stop expected added functionality with each new update and bet on reduced functionality.
Expecting. Damn you iPhone keyboard!
considering that 4.01 a few short weeks ago gave us speed-up and speed-down of video - with sound - and not long before that there was Scene Search added (both running smooth as a baby's bottom on the thing), I'd say the (useful) new functionality train hasn't derailed just yet.
Yes there are some pretty debatable additions, but they are dong well overall with the PSP. Of course I'd love FLAC support tomorrow, but let's see what they get up to. I'd say Sony still have some tricks up their sleeve.
@tekdroid with homebrew there is FLAC support, homebrew is why I have a few PSP's, old & new. homebrew has given us instant game saving in psx, umd/iso/cso & Sony DLG (downloadable games) as per the latest release. SECURITY FIXES??? WHERE IS IT????

@tekdroid with homebrew there is FLAC support
-----------
Yeah, and it's very poorly done, IMO.
Native FLAC support is what's needed.
The "other features":
While the official changelog of firmware 4.05 is underwhelming, it does feature a key hidden feature: support for movie and TV service. According to this support page on PlayStation.com, "Support for PLAYSTATION®Store Movies and TV video service" has also been added in firmware 4.05. Undoubtedly, we're going to find out more about this service during tomorrow's E3 conference.

...its for the Japanese 1-seg stuff....
Also includes support for Playstation Store Movies and TV Video Service. I take it we'll find out what that really means tomorrow.
Well, aside from the single visualization (just a clone of wavy background), I do notice that the web browser seems faster and displays pages a little better... but maybe I'm just seeing things.
Don't notice any other changes.
Do you know if it is a new build?
I have no idea. There is no version info anywhere. It just says Netfront Browser with Macromedia Flash, but the copyright is 2008, whether that means anything.
That Movies and TV Service could be the one that launced in the UK today. I'm sure though that there is more functuality in the upgrade that will be revealed tomorrow.
Where is that update 4.05 available .I searched in PS underground but did not find anything.
I went to the "Network Update" and it's downloading now. (9:57AM JST)
The gf bought one yesterday and the update then was still 4.01 when I grabbed it via the Network Update.
P.S. I'm in Japan, so I don't know if there's different updates depending on the device/region you're in. I know the games work wherever though. I'll try out the 1SEG TV once the download is complete and advise if I see any difference.
I noticed the 1SEG TV now lets you program to record upcoming shows, instead of only what's currently playing. I haven't tested it though to see if it will 'wake up' the PSP just to record. The thing is, your PSP will need to be able to receive the signal, not only to see the lineup of TV shows, but to record once the time comes. 1SEG TV is fickle and likes a clear signal.
Good news if you're in Japan and enjoy what's on 1SEG TV, but the gf just picked up a Sony BDZ-X90 Blu-ray Recorder, so she'll transfer TV stuff from that to her PSP. (Once I hook everything up...blah)
I guess if you don't/can't use 1SEG TV, the update was rather...meh.
i'm kind of surprised they're still making psps at all...
And I'm kind of surprised your post hasn't been ranked lowest yet.
I never said I had anything against the PSP. They've just been on the market forever and I still only know one person who owns one.
Well, Tony...
I know at least 4 people who JUST got a PSP. Their first (maybe only) PSPs and they're still using them. I live in a fairly sized town close to a relatively small city...
You get the picture.. Plus, I lived in Vancouver, BC last year and being in a wealthy + mostly Asian city I saw plenty of classmates and other people with PSPs.
Your friends aren't the only ones who determine the outcome of a console war or w/e.
Eh, I'll stick with my whatever-version M33 for now. What I have works and this update doesn't seem too earth-shattering for me. At least it's nice to see Sony doing updates that actually add useful components (Movies and TV service).
Heh yeah well 4.05 is now required for PSN Store Downloads and they made changes for the Movie and TV Service.
Alek made a comment but Dark_Alex says on this maxconsole post no 4.05 M33. I should got my theme back before roday.... darn!
http://forums.maxconsole.net/showpost.php?p=983567&postcount=16
someone go test out a divx movie on it!
I just got version 4.05 all i have got is one visulisation cum on
You know, I'm kinda tired of the people talking bad stuff about Sony because they try to stop de homebrew... dude, it's they're product and when you bought it you agred to their terms. If you don't have money to buy UMD's then don't buy a damn PSP, I mean, you don't buy a car if you don't have money for gas. I mean, I'm not particulary fond of Sony, but they have all the right.
it adds just one visialisation! That's kind of bad. And the visualization sucks! Surely they could have come up with something better for the visualization.
