Dev Team shows off video of 'world's first' jailbroken iPhone 3G
We can't say this is a surprise... but it is sweet to see. The iPhone Dev Team has added a video to their blog showing off the latest version of their upcoming PwnageTool 2.0, along with a video of what they claim is the "world's first" jailbroken iPhone 3G. Check the video after the break, and hit the read link to see how their progress is coming on the new case-cracker.

Look! the water in the glass is shaking. What's going to happen...
william @ Jul 15th 2008 2:29PM
Who cares about a video, we all know they are brilliant and will get it done. We have seen a thousand videos of the beta hacked..... News will be when they actually release something other than a stupid video....
Michael @ Jul 15th 2008 12:33PM
They keep getting faster and faster, I think this is good though for iphone users. Apple apps and third party. Good stuff.
lentiman @ Jul 15th 2008 12:37PM

But you Failed FIRST!
bohsocks @ Jul 15th 2008 12:43PM
You set the bar oh-so low and still failed.
Khris @ Jul 15th 2008 12:39PM
Until the tool is released, who cares!
bohsocks @ Jul 15th 2008 12:44PM
Usually the TOOL is released as soon as Steffen Jobs posts a comment on a story.
John Johnson @ Jul 15th 2008 12:39PM
Think someone'll trade a 350Z for this one? :)
Jesse @ Jul 15th 2008 12:52PM
Apple will probably push a software update out that will brick the phone in as little time as it took to jailbreak it.
Jimmy Jones @ Jul 15th 2008 1:01PM
well, if Apple push out update to brick devices, then the street guys will keep winning because this doesn't look like these jailbreakers are going to stop....it looks as tho they're just having fun at the terminal and gui....for the masses..
Andrew @ Jul 15th 2008 1:12PM
Why? iPhone 2.0 firmware was cracked before it was already released.. They simply cracked the new iPhone now. It's the same scenario as with the first iPhone
BFish @ Jul 15th 2008 1:05PM
Did they got that operator lock broken ?
MrWhite @ Jul 15th 2008 1:11PM
What's the point now? I know some want to use it on other carriers but what was the appeal of it being jailbroke in the first place? It was the apps, now that you can download apps legally, I don't see the appeal anymore. I had my iPhone jailbroke for about a week, got board of it and restored it back to factory, then the update came out and bricked a bunch of phones. I lol'd. I'm enjoying the new iPhone 2,0 update as it is, it offers everything a jailbroke phone can do and more in my opinion. I consider it the iPhone dev team a waste of time and resources.
ralphchristopher @ Jul 15th 2008 1:21PM
Yeah, call me when the NES emulator gets on the Apple store.
MrWhite @ Jul 15th 2008 1:22PM
Yawn!
Raheem @ Jul 15th 2008 1:23PM
You got bored and restored it to factory? Why didn't you just remove the apps? Sounds a bit dumb to me. Also the updates didn't brick iPhones if you waited and knew what you were doing. Wait... is this Steve Jobs?
maksimus @ Jul 15th 2008 2:22PM
That comment wasn't well thought through...
From the appstore you can only download apps which are approved by Apple...
Regarding bricked iPhones... there was an unBriker tool released...
Anyway...
Somatic @ Jul 15th 2008 1:29PM
Really? It does everything and more? Can you give me a link to the app in iTunes that will let me change the appearance of the GUI?
Thanks.
Cagrino @ Jul 15th 2008 1:32PM
As long as Apple still has to approve who can put applications on the App Store, then the dev team has a legitimate case for what they do. You should be able to install any program on the device; including those that you personally wrote.
Not to mention that there are countless companies waiting to get their applications on the App Store... Still waiting for SlingPlayer!!
squipple @ Jul 15th 2008 7:42PM
Yeah, what's the appeal when you can download apps off the app store, then copy them off your phone (cuz it's jailbroken) and put them into repositories and share them freely with everyone else...
oh wait..
Chris @ Jul 15th 2008 1:22PM
this is getting f*cking pathetic, just release the damn pwnage tool and get it overwith i mean seriously even real companies dont tease with this many f*cking videos before a release
agrabren @ Jul 15th 2008 1:59PM
Duke Nukem Whenever?
Chris @ Jul 15th 2008 1:23PM
The video freezes at 5 seconds until the end and crashes firefox!
I would have liked to see what was happening to the iphone while this was going on or at least a picture at the end (I didn't get that far so there might be one)
Bunklung @ Jul 15th 2008 2:24PM
FF doesn't crash on me, but it does become unresponsive randomly when I watch embedded Vimeo clips. I thought it had something to do with me using my mouse wheel while the video played, but I can't seemed to reproduce it.
Any others have this problem?
Lolento @ Jul 15th 2008 1:23PM
Is it possible to jail break the iphone and buy apps from app store?
Big John @ Jul 15th 2008 1:26PM
According to a dev livechat over at TUAW that just ended, Installer.app can coexist with the App Store and other installers.
MrWhite @ Jul 15th 2008 1:26PM

One stupid comment after another. You clearly dont know what you are doing or you would not have bricked your phone. Everything that comes out of your mouth makes you look a little more like an idiot and you may want to think about not saying anything else.
TRAFFICBLOWS @ Jul 15th 2008 9:49PM
that there's some pwnage if i do say so myself!
Big John @ Jul 15th 2008 1:26PM
For once, I'll agree with the Apple/iPhone haters around here. This news doesn't really need to be posted on Engadget. Maybe Engadget Mobile, and certainly TUAW, but the main site doesn't need this.
Karl Viklund @ Jul 15th 2008 2:07PM
I hope Apple updates the iPhone soon to lock down device and stop this hacking.

ShadowKain @ Jul 15th 2008 2:45PM
Don't care, yes go and modify your expensive phone fanboys, I just hope you don't get bricked, then I will be laughing at your bank account numbers...
nikster @ Jul 15th 2008 9:50PM
I'll wait for Zibri to make it actually useful. One button unlock and all.
Thought admittedly this is now a minority program since you can't buy iPhones for cheap without contract, and if you buy one full price in Belgium it's already unlocked (and won't brick).
Who Cares @ Jul 16th 2008 1:57AM
Wow, I'm amazed. Now I can take my 3G phone to T-Mobile and take advantage of their Edge network. Jailbreaking is awesome...especially when we have to sign a contract to even buy the phone.
How about you guys put your effort in creating a game for the Appstore?
Thanks.
kelso @ Aug 4th 2008 4:24PM
wow, you are an ignorant prick. Jailbreaking is not the same as unlocking.
It simply allows you to access the filesystem and install third party applications.
The iPhone 3G hasn't been (network) unlocked yet.
dumbass.

Can you type in there:

What's to point to saying what's the point to the cracking of the iphone? I mean someone already said that just like somebody already cracked iphone, pot calling the kettle black, its all I'm saying...

Apple's iPhone is like owning a Ferrari Fxx Evoluzione...

Chris @ Sep 9th 2008 4:46PM
well jailbreaking my phone has caused several programs from the App store, such as Tetris that I already purchased to no longer work.....grr.....I really wanted cycorder....guess I am going to have to restore until I can figure out jow to fix this
