EU slaps Intel with three more antitrust charges

Man, the EU is really not too fond of Intel, is it? Adding to all the other antitrust charges filed against the chipmaker, the friendly grey suits at the European Commission have slapped on an additional three: paying a "leading European retailer" not stock AMD products, giving incentives to PC makers to switch to Intel chips, and paying an unspecified company to delay the launch of an AMD-based product. For its part, Intel is reacting like it always does when the Europeans get prickly: by steadfastly denying everything. Intel has eight weeks to file a formal response, but as with all of these cases, we wouldn't expect a resolution any time soon.

Anyway, I don't feel sorry for Intel at all since AMD just reported $1.2B loss. The market is turning too much to Intel's favor and thus reducing competition. What happened to the time when AMD ruled the gaming market? I know the answer.

I used to be a huge AMD fanboy, I even skimped over DDR2 just to stay with S939 and with the awesome Athlon 64 series, with my last system.

However, now that I'm running a QX6850... it's kind of sad to see both companies flailing underneath financial woes.

The only reason Intel is ahead is because they are currently producing a superior processor / chipset. This is analogous to the ATi / nVidia competition (for now, anyways).

Back when AMD was ahead was because they were producing superior processors.

AMD has never been ahead, there have always been more computers sold or offered with Intel over AMD even when AMD's chips were better. It was only after the slight success of their chips that Toshiba etc started even offering more AMD chips.

When will fools like you learn? Europe is the biggest market for Microsoft and Intel alike. If they stopped shipping products to Europe they would lose huge amounts of money! I suspect you have very little education.

Also, this is in YOUR best interest! AMD should be allowed to compete on an equal playing field. What Intel has done is terrible, if Intel wins on technology alone fine!

What is your problem anyway? AMD and Intel are both American companies. The EU is standing up for the weaker party in order for there to be MORE competition and better products for consumers everywhere!

Oh, you are soooo right. Europe is not known for innovation. It's not like we started any Industrial Revolutions or anything.

Heck, that first computer we created (in Britain) never went far. Diesel engines are a thing of the past. Surely we can do better than x-rays, I want z-rays!

That WWW thingy we created at CERN in Switzerland will never catch on anyway. ARM processors are so small! Companies like Nokia never create anything useful or new. And I have doubts about that GSM cellphone network we invented.

Because Apple is its own worst enemy. Always has been, always will be. There is no reason to slap an Anti-Trust lawsuit on a company which is self limiting its own profits. Microsoft doesn't even enter into the picture with Apple. They've never competed. Even back in the 80s. Apple always sold hardware, MS always sold software. Back in the day it was really more IBM vs Apple. IBM's open-ish hardware platform won out. MS was just the supplier of the OS, so MS did well by being IMBs software vendor. And ever since then, people keep comparing Apple to MS. It'd be better to compare Apple to Dell, or Apple to IMB, or even the most valid of all comparisons.. Apple to Sun. But because the software which runs on Apple Computers is the thing which sets them apart from everyone else in the computer game, everyone thinks they are a software company. And that is something Steve jobs will never let happen. Its more profitable to be a niche hardware supplier who can say "it just works", than to build the support base MS has built, to allow every configuration of everything, and become a true software vendor.

OK, some I'm going to put this on the table first I currently have an AMD system, but its starting to show its age and my next system is going to be in Intel system. That being said if and only if all of these charges are proven then Intel is in for a world of SHIT and the reason for this is because AMD will be able to file suite against them for lost profiles and other BLAH, BLAH, BLAH stuff.
Yes I am aware that it would be a little late in the game but with the extra cash they could win from all this they would finally be able to build new FAB's and expand R&D. Yes it would take a few years for the consumer to see any changes in market share but it would give a nice jump start. Sure Intel can and will fight all of those charges but if anyone can get them to stick its the EU so only time will tell..

This is really an issue of ethics, not performance. I would rather "trust" a company, who doesn't practice dirty tricks like Intel or M$, with my money.

Intel and Microsoft are just names that have been sold to unsuspecting buyers. Sadly much of the world buys what's popular, just because it's popular.
