Power-generating dance floor hits UK club

Believe it or not, this actually isn't the first power-generating dance floor to harness some of the pent up energy of club-goers, but it is apparently the first one to hit the UK, and hopefully a sign of more to come. As you can see above, the dance floor makes use of a piezoelectric system that produces electricity as the dancers jump up and down, which charges some batteries that are used to power parts of the club. While that's certainly a practical application for the technology, we're guessing it's only a matter of time before some enterprising club owner combines one of these with an LED dance floor to create a dance floor that powers itself, and thumbs its nose at other do-gooder clubs.

@phanbouy
You're trying...too hard.
good call Allexy
i always appreciate notes from a fellow comedian. i'll try to match your masterstrokes of humor such as your double post of this gem:

or maybe this one:

...But no high-power lasers though, right? OK, good! I'm in. Just no more lasers please.
I'd like to see a pizza that "recharges" itself when eaten.
@BigD145: Funny that - WATT, the first club with a power-generating dancefloor will open in September in the Netherlands: http://www.watt-rotterdam.nl/
It's called "Reply". Use it.
The UK, in my opinion, has the best clubs ever. I haven't been to one though. It costs "a lot" to fly around the world these days.
so, what you're saying is that your opinions are based on ignorance and hearsay then? thanks for the valuable input
Correct they are the best clubs, partly because you have never graced any of them with your presence...
Its rather funny how we get lots of NED's and Chavs on engadget as soon as something has the tags "dance", "DJ" or "music". I +1 the comment about whites who think they have rhythm being a dangerous force.
If I typed everything I hated about those guys, i would fill engadgets server.
But either way, its a nice use for the technology. Installing it in streets would be a nice idea too. Although im not sure how you would maintain it. And oh god!, no more road works PLEASE!
Sorry for the single post

Nah, Just what i've noticed. I'm a fan of the UK and their music
scene. I would definitely love to go over there if you would offer me plane tickets. I live in PA. If you want more info, just ask.
Interesting. Perhaps if they combine this with turbines in the median of interstates (http://www.inhabitat.com/2007/04/30/highway-wind-power/) perhaps the energy generated could power more than street lights and signs. Though there's question of how much all that infrastructure would cost in comparison to the cost of electricity from the grid.
How long till they put these types of floors in other places like football, basketball, and baseball stadiums? How about busy city sidewalks? It seems like the slight give in the floor would also have the benefit of easing foot pain. I don't see how you could lose with this sort of technology.
One loss would be for elderly or handicapped people; it would be like always traveling uphill.
how long does it take for the gimmick to actually save money?
I'm sure purchasing, installing and maintaining a power-generating dancefloor isn't exactly cheap, and it only powers 'parts' of the club.
The real Smooth Criminal here is the dancefloor salesman. ahaha.
I only dance in clubs that are Eco-Disco friendly.
Wow - this is really impressive. I am definitely going to fly to London and check out this energy saving club. I really want to show my solidarity with the people at this club and what they are trying to achieve. Any questions about how much energy it takes to produce and deploy and promote this new new thing are un-green and miss the point. Whats really important is to show others how green they need to be, and I for one applaud anything these people do.
I was at the very club last night, it's Oceana Southampton, and you could not tell the dance floor was any different (apart from the obvious lights), and I was very impressed with it, hell, the entire club was amazing
Need to retract that comment, the one in Oceana is self powered for lighting, this article was talking about one for the entire club (I commented before hitting the read link)
lol. enslave riverdance-ers to power your home!
So does this mean that people have to start dancing to make the lights and music come on?
what about installing this underneath busy roads/highways?
way ahead of ya
