iPhone Dev Team unleashes Pwnage Tool 2.0
Sort of. Pwnage Tool 2.0 can't handle 3G iPhone SIM unlocks just yet, though jailbreaking should work just fine, and we're also faced with the teensy little problem of the Dev Team's server being totally destroyed by downloads already -- mirror please? -- but the friendly little jailbreak app has finally been unleashed upon the earth. We'd never suggest trying out software like this right out of the gate, but, um, let us know how it goes, yeah?

Update: We're seeing mixed results so far in the comments, but no bricked phones to speak of. Always a good thing. Oh, and plenty of mirrors to be found in the comments, thanks guys!
Update 2: Looks like 2.0.1 is already out with a few fixes!

it kept telling me that I selected the wrong bundle package, but restored my iPhone with the ipsw file with no problem at all, could anyone help me to firgure out why pls pls pls~~~~~
Works like a charm for me. iPhone 1st gen. 16gb
where did you download the ipsw file could you pls tell me?
i've having trouble with even the first step, it kept telling me that i selected the wrong bundle, what's that about?
Damm, this is rocky update..
I restored from a previous backup, so the settings would leave. Unfortunately there is problems with permissions, so the mail.app keeps crashing. To fix that, I need SSH to the phone. To SSH I need an OpenSSH, but Cydia sucks-badly, because I'm on some dirty 512k wifi network which keeps crashing constantly, making Cydia completely blocking the iPhone - all I can do is hard reset (home+sleep)...
However, iTunes Remote is briliant.
Just to throw my results into the mix. I came home from the pub last night to see that it had been released. Downloaded 2.0 firmware, found a link to the botloader files on gogle. Dowloaded Pwnage and after a 1st failed attempt to get it into DFU mode because the Pwnage animation messed up, I got it all running.
I've had no problems, facebook ap crashed once and everything else works fine.
FYI: I'm on a US 1st gen iPhone that has been unlocked with every firmware release since I bought it. Running on Vodafone in the UK.
2.0.... easy with PC just donwload already "modified" firmware and restore it on itunes... full instructions here:
http://sleepers.net/news/2008/07/20/pwnage-option-for-windows-users/
worked for me not a single error... just super monkey ball!
Great

you know, i could post the following comment on any story and it would still be relevant (and funny):
i was trying to see this on my new iphone but it wouldn't load.
we are such tools of Steve Jobbs and his stupid iphone.
and while i'm at it, i am not a microsoft fanboy. i hate microsoft fanboys. and apple fanboys. there is no rite answer to the microsoft vs apple. different ppl have different needs. If you are just doing email and word processing then you need windows. if you are doing graphic design and stuff, then you need apple. apples are wayyy overpriced for what most people use them for. and ipods work fine on windows. if you have itunes. did i mention what tools we are of steve jobbs?
Although I do not care fanboys, I do love fangirls!
Does anyone know if I can jailbreak it on a Mac, then add all the apps and stuff I want on a Windows computer?
I have a question...
Has anyone that "jailbroke" their iphone used the adjustment slider in Pwnage Tool for the root level directory to give it more space? I can see this being handy to do for the future in anticipation of more apps and whatnot to be (hopefully) available soon through Installer.app. I'm thinking of doing my 3G just to give the directory more space for storage of apps etc. Would this work? Then theoretically you could have more stuff installed on the iPhone app directory without it getting eaten up as fast. I'm thinking of creating a 1GB or so dir/ anyone done this?
Thanks,
Faslane
TO FIX MAIL PROBLEMS:
After updating your iphone and everything, do not select to restore a backup from your computer just yet. Unplug the iphone, open up mail, select anything, hit cancel, THEN restore your iphone backup. No more problems
I think it's hilarious personally that so many people are having problems with this,
(not to everyone, but the dickhole ones that pissed and moaned for days to pressure the Dev Team, exclude yourself from this post if you weren't one f them)
everyone pissed and moaned about a release date once they found the Dev Team was getting close, and all that. So the Dev Team releases this and no one knows how to properly use it, (when if you read the instructions, and go at it carefully it isn't hard to do at all) and now everyone is bitching and moaning again LMAO!!!! GOOD LUCK you whiners!!! You bitched, they answered LOL all the way to the bank. L8R

It didn't work. I tried to restore with the new custom firmware and got an "Error (6)"
Any help?
I still have the original iphone 2.0 software and 1.1.4 software in the Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates Folder
Mine is certainly jailbroken after the first attempt. But, It doesn't seem to be unlocked.
I inserted a T-Mobile chip and it said to connect to iTunes b/c a different SIM was detected.
Am I missing something?
Oh... 1 gen iPhone 8 GB
Hmmm just bricked my previously unlocked 1.1.3 on Rogers. Not sure how the desktop file was supposed to be found by iTunes but now I'm locked out and can't restore... anybody? Looking for ways to unbrick I guess.
Step-by-step directions with all the tools you need to update/unlock your 1st generation iPhone to 2.0 with Windows. Fast torrent download, you need a torrent client for this... micro torrent (utorrent) works great :

Get Into DFU mode BEFORE running Pwange 2.0
Hi, this advice worked for me anyway—
Having recently purchased a used iPhone G4, I'm a novice to the whole Pwnage Unlock/Jailbreak thing, but happily for me I did it— finally! But man, it was tough! I had to try at least ten times.
I followed the "Pwnage 2.0 Guide" (http://sleepers.net/news/guides/pwnage-20-guide/) which did helped. BUT, left out was one crucial step (at least for novices like me). BEFORE one even opens Pwnage 2.0, one needs to put their iPhone into "DFU mode or all the other steps won't work (at least that was the case for me).
Even getting into that before the whole "Pwnage 2.0' experience up front was tough, and I really don't remember which of a number of attempts finally got me in to it in the "right way" to finally "Pwn" my iPhone G4.
ALSO, critical to note at the end of the Pwnage 2.0 process (and it is a process!) when one is in iTunes to do the final Pwned Restore, "Option-Restore" means hold down the "Option" key when clicking Restore, to get to the Pwned custom firmware file created earlier on your Desktop that does the Pwning otherwise you'll just get a plain vanilla Apple restore with no Pwnage Unlock/Jailbreak done at all. That happen to me before I figure that key item out. X <
Simple, right? Yeah, right! GOOD LUCK!
P.S. on how to get into DFU mode
Step 1. Turn off your iPhone by holding the top power button, then sliding the red button that pops up to the right.
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.
Step 5. Close iTunes and THEN open Pwnage 2.0 and follow the step-by-step instructions it gives you
Just jailbroke my 3G 8GB, nothing much new to report here yet, Cydia has some offerings and i changed my "bars" icon to the AT&T Globe and installed insomnia (which keeps networks alive etc when the phone is in "screen off" of lock mode and I installed Poof, which allows you to hide specific app icons, such as stocks or whatever you want. So apps are starting to trickle in, but nothing great yet, no Summerboard etc. yet.

guys i need a lot of help. i cant see to find a way how to unlock my iphone. i have a 8 GB that accidently got updated while my little brother played with my computer. if any one can please help me how to solve this issue. thanks in advance.
Hi Guys, maybe someone can help me with this issue..
I have the 2.0 firmware running my 1st gen Iphone. I used Windows. It actually works pretty much fine, but seems to have some problems. It gets really slow somtimes, can't find EDGE settings, slow typing at SMS, looses connection to WIFI (it is possible that the problem is at my home network).
Right now I have the custom firmware, which was uploaded as one of the "first ones". It has the apple logo when booting, not the pineapple.
So I was actually thinking about trying with another custom firmware, created with the newer version of Pwnage tool. Could somebody give me a link to one?
The other question would be the way reinstalling the firmware. Shall I just do the Shift+Recover with iTunes or do the whole process again?
Some help would be appreciated.
