Velocity Mobile's WinMo-powered 103 handset splashes down in FCC's database
If you thought Velocity Mobile just rolled over and died after showing off a few handsets at CTIA earlier this year, you'd be exactly wrong. The outfit's Windows Mobile-powered 103 has just surfaced in the FCC's lair, giving us a smidgen of hope that a US release is but moments / weeks / months away. Unfortunately, this filing doesn't spill the beans on any other specifications, but the 67 page User Manual does dive into great detail on changing the battery, inserting microSD cards and navigating around within the operating system. C'mon Inventec, give us the good stuff.

LOL. Winmo. :)
Where is the creativity? Looks like every other phone these days. I don't even own one of these and I'm already sick of the design.
kccboy2004 @ Jul 19th 2008 1:32PM
you are right it looks just like the iPhone, which in turn looks just like the Dell Axim 50v.
SuperSexyErik @ Jul 19th 2008 1:44PM
uhm no. This phone has none of the hardware beauty that the iPhone possesses. Sorry
deyanimay @ Jul 19th 2008 1:52PM
OMG i'm sick of apple, all their phones look the same i mean the iphone 3g was so a copy of the original. Where is the creativity.
Almighty- @ Jul 19th 2008 1:52PM
beauty? The iPhone is ugly ! ! !
SuperSexyErik @ Jul 19th 2008 2:09PM
Hehe the only insult you have for the iPhone is that it copied it's original version's beautiful sleek design :)
Fail blackberry fanboy. I guess the iPhone is ugly...that's why apple is out of stock in stores around the world :)
deyanimay @ Jul 19th 2008 2:29PM
I'm not a blackberry fanboy, i was only making a joke.
Jon Doe. @ Jul 20th 2008 2:19PM
Yah none of the beauty, all and more of the functionality. Thanks but I don't buy a fucking phone as a status symbol, I buy it based on its capabilities, its carrier, and just how locked down it is. Guess which shitphone fails in all of those categories? You people are such lemmings its not even funny. Activation in store. Unkie Steve telling you what you can and can't load on your phone. Dear god you fanbois have turned into something worse then even the most pathetic MS fanboi. At least most Window\MS users are capable of seeing that MS has them bent over and is fucking them hard. You people are delusional enough to actually think this is the same benevolent Apple that started this revolution in the 70's. Think again. They are as bad as MS ever was. Right now they are just positioning themselves in a way that puts them in a point of power that MS never remotely had. And if you think Apple is going to be some benevolent monopoly you really are a tool.
No Apple is the new MS. Worse then they ever were. And you tools are the ones who are putting them in this position. All because OMG OMG OMG! MS is TEH ENEMY!
Careful or someday you are going to turn around to give Apple a high five and find out who the enemy of choice, stability, security, and features really is.
Surur @ Jul 19th 2008 1:02PM
Interesting - a front facing camera coming to US?
xValentine @ Jul 19th 2008 1:05PM
Oh, a Cybershot!
Ryan Trevisol @ Jul 19th 2008 1:23PM
Which they didn't even bother taking the stickers off of.
Also proving you can take a crappy picture even with a decent camera.
Don @ Jul 19th 2008 1:39PM
its a casio from the looks of it... no wonder they always take blurry pix
Ryan Trevisol @ Jul 19th 2008 2:21PM
Uhm, you replied to a comment about it being a "Cybershot". And unless Casio spelled backwards is Y-N-O-S, I'm pretty sure it's a Sony.
Sly Fox @ Jul 19th 2008 2:30PM
I thought Sony makes cybershots?
*sarcasm*
Don @ Jul 19th 2008 4:08PM
Upon further inspection yes it does look like a Sony
+1 for you..
chris @ Jul 19th 2008 8:17PM
don't you hate it when people keep their cameras with stickers on.. ? I hate that, same with laptops.. Yay !! your computer as intel inside.. and Windows XP... wow.... take the sticker off already, it won't ruin the computer....

alan @ Jul 19th 2008 1:20PM
i agree entirely with eric, all of these phones look the same these days, will be interesting to see what the spec is though, i think camera phones these days are too focused on megapixels, which are only important if you want to expand your photos, i would love to see a camera phone with optical zoom but maybe thats asking too much

They seem to owe a lot of their design to the HTC Touch. Small d-pad and call/end keys. Hmm.
Sly Fox @ Jul 19th 2008 1:33PM
There is a d-pad on that thing? it must be hidden behind the trackball?!
Sly Fox @ Jul 19th 2008 1:34PM
**sarcasm**
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 1:55PM
...fair enough. I just glanced at it. It looked like a round d-pad with a depressed central button.
but my point still stands

Call NAVIGATION End
In a small, touchscreen, WM device it's all VERY like the HTC Touch.
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 1:56PM
Damnit it wiped out my spacing.
The NAVIGATION should be central to the screen with the End on the right side
Sly Fox @ Jul 19th 2008 2:18PM
Yes, but doesn't almost every phone have that same layout, with Call NAVIGATION End? I mean its not like HTC invented that.(BTW I love HTC)
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 2:30PM
No, but as far as I know they were the first to bring out a small, thin WM professional device with only those buttons below a 2.8" screen. Since then there's been like 4 or 5 identical devices made, whilst their product design has moved on.
chris @ Jul 19th 2008 8:25PM
optical zoom wouldn't necessarily help. the two dumbest things to look for in any sort of camera is the Megapixel # and the Optical Zoom X. Companies keep marketing those two things (along with screen size) because no one knows anything about cameras, they just look at the big numbers... oohhh 12MP, 20X optical.. and look it's shiny !!!!! jesus.
What everyone would need and benefit from is having a large quality lens, to be able to absorb as much light to create a crisp, colorful image (generally larger lens diameter = better). No consumer really needs anything over 6MP anyways (that's an 8x10 at 300dpi), most people would benefit more from having a wide angle lens as opposed to a longer telephoto range.
so what i would like to see is Nokia coming out with an N97 32GB, featuring a 4MP camera with a good quality photo lens, that shoots true 720p video, not choppy, dark. and to have a 24mm equivalent wide angle. I always use my cell phone as a quick capture of things happening around me. not 100s of yards away. it's cute simple souvenirs of me going someplace.. me in he photo or friends.. that's a cell phone. I'd also like to see Apple do this. (i have both the N95 and iPhone 3G both driving me nuts with their potencial but each missing the mark equally.. but in different ways.)

Ok go to velocitymobile.com and read the spec sheet on the 103 and is it just me or does it say nothing about the form factor of the phone? I mean is it touch screen, or is it a slider?
deyanimay @ Jul 19th 2008 1:53PM
or maybe both
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 2:03PM
It SAYS it's touchscreen.
Windows Mobile PROFESSIONAL.That means TOUCHSCREEN.
I'm DAMN sure the FCC would have noticed a sliding mechanism and had it in the thing.
Sly Fox @ Jul 19th 2008 2:10PM
Lol, just checking god.
Sly Fox @ Jul 19th 2008 2:11PM
Ohhhh, i didn't notice. But, they didn't really say that much about it being a touchscreen device, it doesn't even say it in the article at the top...
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 2:32PM
agreed, they're understating that.
Syren @ Jul 19th 2008 2:03PM
Looks like they hired the same contractor as RIM for the little rollball thingy...
deyanimay @ Jul 19th 2008 2:32PM
sidekicks have it too.
SuperSexyErik @ Jul 19th 2008 2:45PM
my gf has a blackberry. The whole ball thing sucks.
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 2:52PM
You have a gf? does she realise you spend your free time (and probably work time) spamming gadget sides advertising an overhyped, superseded gadget? Would she still date you if she did?
maybe reconsider your life mate ;)
SuperSexyErik @ Jul 19th 2008 4:56PM
she knows I love tech. Especially great mobile computers like the iPhone . She used to like blackberry before she bought one. Now she realizes that hard to use and old tech don't mix well :)
Anyway, I'm on here so much cuz I'm waiting to join the airforce and I have nothing better to do . Once I join I'll leave you all alone :)
Phoenix @ Jul 19th 2008 6:31PM
This is the part where I go and persuade the Airforce to take you NOW. Although you'd probably just fly around firing free iPhones at terrorists. They'd be like "Aww crap! They're sending pieces of worthless junk at us! Let's stop fighting!"
And then the world would be rid of them. And we'd have no iPhones.
On second thoughts... Please, PLEASE join the airforce. For the good of humanity.
SuperSexyErik @ Jul 19th 2008 9:00PM
:D
somebody's a lil jelous that i can get pussy ;)
Steffen Jobbs @ Jul 19th 2008 6:02PM
OMG. This is such a wonderful, beautiful, original.....................................FAIL.
Just kidding.
Steffen Jobbs @ Jul 19th 2008 11:52PM
My avatar just loves this handset almost as much as he loves WinMo 6.1 and Vista. He's also rather fond of bananas, too. He said he absolutely hates the iPhone 3G. He swears it's too difficult for him to use. He keeps complaining about the iPhone's simplistic human interface not being compatible with the way he thinks.
hiko36 @ Jul 20th 2008 12:48AM
It looks like a Shadow with a trackball to me...
roberto luongo @ Jul 20th 2008 11:31AM
you know, i could post the following comment on any story and it would still be relevant (and funny):
i was trying to see this on my new iphone but it wouldn't load.
we are such tools of Steve Jobbs and his stupid iphone.
and while i'm at it, i am not a microsoft fanboy. i hate microsoft fanboys. and apple fanboys. there is no rite answer to the microsoft vs apple. different ppl have different needs. If you are just doing email and word processing then you need windows. if you are doing graphic design and stuff, then you need apple. apples are wayyy overpriced for what most people use them for. and ipods work fine on windows. if you have itunes. did i mention what tools we are of steve jobbs?
dave @ Sep 11th 2008 5:37AM
I have a pre release device and a 111 and the 83 we well .. great devices !
