Faber's Imago+ multimedia hood redirects attention from stove to TV
We can't help but love when a plan comes together, and if you've been hesitant about replacing your kitchen hood while secretly longing to redirect those funds towards a new LCD, there's a compromise staring you right in the face. Faber's luxurious Imago+ multimedia hood boasts a stainless steel / glass finish, fits nicely above your range and includes a 19-inch LCD TV with a 1,440 x 900 resolution, 300 cd/m2 brightness and 850:1 contrast ratio. Unfortunately for you Americans, the internal tuner caters to DVB-T signals, though the decent lineup of ports will allow you to connect up other sources of content. Mum's the word on a price, but again, those having to ask will probably be forced to pass.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a terrible idea. Surely it's dangereous to be computing while cooking, and isn't it going to get fairly filthy being above the stove?
Tony C @ Jul 21st 2008 12:10PM
Hah! Yeah... It'd be a greasy, sticky, smoky, kitchen sludge covered mess...
I like the idea of a TV screen in the door of a microwave better! LOL
Adderz @ Jul 20th 2008 9:08AM
What gets me is the usability. The kitchen hood is NEVER at eye level. So youd be straining your neck, plus it would be IMPOSSIBLE to watch while your busying yourself under it.
A LCD snuck behind the stove splashback, with a protective/wipeable pane of glass infront would of been much more usable. I suppose you have to do this when you put in the kitchen though.
Terrible idea.
deyanimay @ Jul 20th 2008 9:57AM
its obviously for your guests to watch while you cook
Adderz @ Jul 20th 2008 10:05AM
but if thats the case, why would you have the tv on when your chatting?
deyanimay @ Jul 20th 2008 10:09AM
because your a bad conversationalist
Russ @ Jul 20th 2008 11:10PM
never at eye level: and their product shot VERY effectively demonstrates this! i'm getting sick just looking the the pic.
KC @ Jul 20th 2008 9:26AM
Definitely for people with more money then sense. I suppose it's ok if you just want to listen to the news while cooking, but it would be hard to watch and I mean if your mostly just going to listen to it anyway, why bother?
I have a breakfast bar with a 20" Samsung LCD sitting on it. Much more practical when I am enjoying my mourning coffee then trying to turn around and look above the stove.
Precise @ Jul 20th 2008 9:32AM
I'd hate to see what that thing looks like after a few meals cooked on the stove.
martin @ Jul 20th 2008 9:37AM
im assuming this is for people who only have their kitchens for show, and just eat out all the time.
TimeyWimeyStuff @ Jul 20th 2008 9:41AM
Which way round is that picture?
I still don't get it
TheGeektoriousBIG @ Jul 20th 2008 12:44PM
Har har, I had trouble for a brief second but the black square is the TV.
GPSRider @ Jul 20th 2008 9:54AM
Apparently Faber has never heard of grease...
Josh @ Jul 20th 2008 10:19AM
I would have thought dust would be more of an issue.
Since the point of a hood is to catch all the smells and fumes that waft from your food, in THEORY there shouldn't be much going out and over the top of it. I mean, we have cupboards above our cooker (no hood) and they're not covered in grease..
xarento @ Jul 20th 2008 10:16AM
I reckon that'd be pretty good to mount above your bed, if you're too lazy to sit up. I can't imagine it'd be a pleasant experience to watch with a stove on tho...
deyanimay @ Jul 20th 2008 10:37AM
the screen is the black square
Josh @ Jul 20th 2008 10:20AM
Is it possible that it's not for watching while you cook?
It'd make more sense for people who dine in the kitchen and want to watch TV whilst they eat and this is simply their rather strange way of integrating it into the kitchen in an "unassuming" way.
Samboini @ Jul 20th 2008 10:49AM
My friend has something very similar to this, and tbh, it's shit. He agrees it was a waste of money!

you know, i could post the following comment on any story and it would still be relevant (and funny):
i was trying to see this on my new iphone but it wouldn't load.
we are such tools of Steve Jobbs and his stupid iphone.
and while i'm at it, i am not a microsoft fanboy. i hate microsoft fanboys. and apple fanboys. there is no rite answer to the microsoft vs apple. different ppl have different needs. If you are just doing email and word processing then you need windows. if you are doing graphic design and stuff, then you need apple. apples are wayyy overpriced for what most people use them for. and ipods work fine on windows. if you have itunes. did i mention what tools we are of steve jobbs?
wlp @ Jul 20th 2008 1:03PM
Who would have thought a mac vs microsoft debate could erupt on a article about a tv with a stove attached to it... no relevance at all
I especially enjoyed your clever segue in attempt of making your comment relevant to the article.
*negative vote*
deyanimay @ Jul 20th 2008 1:14PM
way to go stupid
TG @ Jul 20th 2008 1:58PM
did I mention what a tool YOU are? Ok, I did.
andres @ Jul 20th 2008 2:03PM
the only funny thing is that no matter where you post this it will almost surely be low ranked
Reader @ Jul 20th 2008 8:26PM
It's actually neither relevant or funny. Better luck next time I guess.
John Sullivan @ Jul 20th 2008 1:16PM
Engadget-- you left out the important data, at least from the cook's perspective: CFM, as in Cubic Feet per Minute. 'Nother words, how effective at pulling the stink of your cabbage soup out of the kitchen? The read link has it in metric, and my fat, lazy american self isn't going to bother converting it, but it appears to be pretty pathetic. Mount a good Viking, Wolf, or Vent-A-Hood shell above the range and have a decent midsize LCD mounted in a custom enclosure instead.
pixyz @ Jul 20th 2008 1:21PM
Could this be a fun addition to one of those cooking shows like Iron Chef?
jack1701 @ Jul 20th 2008 10:01PM
best cooking show: Gordon Ramsay, iron chef UK

KilgoreTrout @ Jul 20th 2008 3:17PM
What a meaningless BS.
I choose a 19" too for my kitchen but I would never ever want it stuck into the hood the fridge or any other kitchen appliance.
It just makes it more difficult and more expensive to upgrade or to repair any one of the components.
Besides, like all the monitors in my house I could esily integrate it in my home system, I was able to attach an IR rec/sender to connect it with parabol,a media extentder to connect it to my NAS and a nearly invisible 2.1 speaker system. I also could attach a little HDD so as to use it as a digital photo frame while playng music.
For reasons of space I choose a LCDTV that had an inbuilt DVD/CD player and Even that I'm not sure it was a good idea even though the samsong brand should give some kind of guarantees for quality.
Bottom of the line: buy all your components separate, don´t even have your HT /HiFi receiver integrated with the amplifier. Nothing.
This way you can always choose the best for your needs, upgrade when you like have more flexibility and save money too.
lens42 @ Jul 20th 2008 7:44PM
The stupidity of this is only matched by all those home theater ads that show a flat screen TV over a fireplace. You'd have to try very hard to find a less convenient place to watch a TV. Next they'll be showing them behind a toilet.
icepop4who @ Jul 20th 2008 11:38PM
Food on flamo+ redirects attention from TV to stove.
Weasel Chops @ Jul 21st 2008 10:47AM
Err I quite like the idea!
Where else would I put a tv/monitor/computer in my medium size (UK) kitchen?
Mine is currently on top of a tall fridge which is way above eye level and bordering on neck straining!
I have no spare walls, little spare worktop space but I do have a cooker hood I want to replace.
But it is bound to mega expensive :| Maybe a DIY special is in order :-)
