Method devised for pwning first-gen iPhones running 2.0 via Windows
Feeling a little left out after yesterday's Mac-based Pwnage Tool festivities, Windows users? Fret not, because the ever-vigilant, ever-studious hacking community has managed to come up with a series of steps to get you back on your feet again with a fully pwned first-gen handset. The whole shebang isn't necessarily for the most casual jailbreakers -- let's just say it isn't quite as straightforward as the Mac procedure yet -- but it'll allegedly get you going if you're starting with an iPhone running 1.1.4 (there are additional steps if you jumped the gun on 2.0, you impatient son of a gun, you -- think of it as penance). As always, exercise extreme caution, understand that this could cause your iPhone to spontaneously combust into a useless pile of metal, plastic, and ash, and let us know how it goes in comments.

Yeah, cause boot camp lets you run OSX on a Windows computer.. Wait.. What's that, Steve Jobs? We can't have both operating systems because we don't have an expensive fruit etched into the side of our machines? Screw you, Steve Jobs.

That's just great news. I believe it's been said that almost 40% of the iPhone purchasers are Windows desktop users. They've grown tired of their WinMo smartphones. Grab their testicles and their hearts and minds will follow.... all the way to Macs and OSX. They'll soon understand that Apple Kool-Aid needs to be sipped slowly.
First iPods, now iPhones. Bit by bit, the halo takes place and before they realize it, the Windows users will be spending all their spare time at the Apple Store wondering why they didn't switch earlier.

My avatar hasn't quite made the transition yet. He's still using Windows Vista and WinMo 6.1 and his favorite human is Steve Ballmer. My avatar really likes the way Ballmer dances.

Yes, because everyone who runs windows had a Winmo device.

1-Or you can go to TPB and search for "iPhone" and "Custom" then sort it by uploaded date.
2-Download Custom file.
3-Do the Alt (Option) + Restore and voila!
Haikibutsu @ Jul 20th 2008 1:43PM
TPB is the best ^.^
jonjon @ Jul 20th 2008 2:29PM

Actually considering that your second post was 3 minutes later, I believe the uptime should read 0 Days, 13 Hr, 44 Min, 29 Sec
Now let's look at this.. This is an apple article about pwning iPhones on Windows-based computers, and you're "commenting" on it about Windows 7 having the ability to run.
What the hell are you smoking, man?
Jay @ Jul 20th 2008 2:06PM
I have used this successfully. The iphone is syncing right now. Short steps I followed:
1) I already had a 1.1.4 unlocked(BL 3.9, guess) by Ziphone. So I just installed BootNeuter from installer and neutered and unlocked my baseband.Kept the BL to 3.9, reason I dont know.
2) I downloaded the modfied 2.0 ipsw from one of the various torrents. Then I went to DFU mode with itunes 7.0 and did shift-restore and used the custom ipsw and I had a jailbroken, unlocked 2.0 on my 2G.
Google for pwnage 2.0 using windows and you will find instructions there.
Cheers
Jay @ Jul 20th 2008 2:06PM
Sorry, itunes 7.7
Scott @ Jul 21st 2008 1:43AM
...or just hit the read link engadget gave us for basically the exact same instructions...
Chris @ Jul 20th 2008 2:15PM
This looks WAY to risky just to get 2.0 unlocked so I can sell my iphone (to get the 3G of course), I think I'm just gonna wait for Ziphone or iLiberty.
elbow @ Jul 20th 2008 2:25PM
Sorry to throw a bit of cold water on this, but unfortunately, all the cool 1.1.x apps that you can get from Installer won't run on 2.0 - d'oh!
Just FYI - after the 2.0 Pwnage is complete (def. not as easy yet as Ziphone/iNdependence), what you're left with is an icon for Cydia, which is the new replacement for Installer. It's still early days - most of what's available so far inside Cydia is unix tools & a few cosmetic skinning things. Nothing super-yummy yet like VideoRecorder, IntelliScreen, etc, etc. (but I'm sure that stuff will be coming, right? right??)
(No disrespect to the dev team meant, just wanted to set folks' expectations...)
Big John @ Jul 20th 2008 2:40PM
When I saw a post describing the Cydia as having most of its functionality at the command line and not through a nice GUI, I knew that this jailbreak really wasn't a big deal. I doubt it ever will be as big of a deal as the first jailbreak was.
Joe H @ Jul 20th 2008 2:52PM
I don't have an iPhone myself, and am actually not exactly a fan of them. However, from what I understand, the only reason that this only contains command-line tools and that sort of thing is that the 1.1.4 programs have to be updated to work on the 2.0 firmware. In the next few weeks you'll see just as many applications as you're used to, I'm sure.
Taylor @ Jul 20th 2008 3:32PM
Cydia isn't a replacement for installer, it's just another program like installer that some people like more - it's more development oriented. Installer should work on 2.0 also, though it may take some time for developers to update their programs. Likely not long though - these developers are pretty damn impressive.
I must say, it kind of seems more like you have an agenda than a real concern for people's interests, or are genuinely misinformed.

Now us linux desktop users just need a convenient and simple way, such as the application featured on the Mac screenshot, to jailbreak our iPhones via linux!
Eric @ Jul 20th 2008 4:08PM
I've never really known anything to be 'convenient and simple' on linux. Good luck.

works flawlessly on a 1.1.4 previously pwned ipod touch (using ipod firmware obviously)
djfost @ Jul 20th 2008 3:37PM
after you pwned your 1.1.4 ipod touch with WinPwn, which pwned firmware did you use? Is the iPhone version compatible?

what exactly does the jailbreaking do/achieve?
