LG reveals XD1 family of portable hard drives
Although Western Digital seems to have the portable hard drive sector all wrapped up, LG's looking to snag a bit of that market share by introducing a new line of stylish alternatives. Each member of the XD1 family possesses a 2.5-inch HDD with a SATA II interface and a USB 2.0 port, and just in case black isn't your bag, you can expect a red wine colored version as well. For now, we'll have to live without a price or release date, but you can look forward to units arriving in 120GB, 160GB, 250GB and 320GB sizes sometime in the future.

any opinions on lg hard drive quality? i need a 320 very soon and i know lg phones are pretty high up in the crappy quality department. does anyone have experience with the western digital my passport portable hdd? i hear they're the best hard drive maker. i can get the 320 for 99 bucks.
matt @ Jul 21st 2008 5:08AM
Lg don't make drives, these will have a samsung/seagate/wd etc in them.
v3xx @ Jul 21st 2008 5:21AM
ok i wasn't sure, with all the lg products out there who knows, they might even make something crazy like a refrigerator.....oh wait.

Watch me not care! 2.5" enclosures are a dime a dozen. In the end, portable HD's made by LG (or Western Digital, for that matter) offer no functional advantage over something you can very easily put together yourself. IMO, you are paying for the label and the pretty color choices (did I mention you can get 2.5" enclosures in pretty colors too?).
Just my two cents.

dude its cheaper to buy one of these than make one. i checked out newegg and some random google searched stores. i can get a 320gb my passport for 100 bucks or i can make one myself for about 130 for the HDD and at least 10 bucks for a case. if you can get me a 320gb hdd for 100 or less let me know.
