Hitachi promotional video highlights Tera Era, effects of hallucinogens
We're not too sure how the advertising director that green lit Hitachi's bizarro perpendicular recording video is still on staff, but sure enough, he / she has been cut loose again as evidenced by the latest spot. We knew the outfit was pushing this whole "Dawn of the Tera Era" slogan with the introduction of its Deskstar 7K1000.B, but this is just taking things entirely too far. Fair warning: the video hosted after the jump contains cartoon scenes that could easily be used by D.A.R.E. officials looking to keep kids from trying drugs, but somehow we get the impression its just a plug for having lots of (Hitachi-branded) storage space. Hmmph.

Great. Thanks. Now I've got the Katamari Damacy song stuck in my head.
"Na naaa~ na na na na na na naa~, Katamari Hitachi...."
Brilliantly disturbing.
I don't like the way the camera is looking at me.
Platter and Actuator as Sun - WOW! - That's all I can say - I don't think you can ever be prepared for a video like that.
Next time i watch this, i need LSD in my system...... I might freak out if i see that camera.......
Anyone got a super high quality version?
I'm having a seizure just looking at the still picture.
Why did I keep expecting a big banana or spoon to enter the scene at any moment.......
because there is no spoon.
bend your narcotized mind around _that_, traveler?
MY HEAD IS NOW A GIANT EGG!!!
Okay, that was weird.
Isn't having movies and MP3s on your computer illegal?
;)
That song will be in my head all day now.
It worked, they already got tens of thousands of viewers without paying a cent to get the ad played.
Oh God...
I'm sorry, Hitachi - I was fine if you wanted me to 'get perpendicular', but if you think I'm renaming all my folders to 'Suzy Song', 'Mack Movie', 'Kimmy Kamera' (ick) and 'Joey Joystick' then you are sorely mistaken!
Seriously though, these promos are great - would you rather have some boring boffin or pathetic 'with-it' person telling you about a company's latest technology. or the some of the most cringe-worthy musical numbers ever created? I know which one I'd prefer. And to John Z - 'Katamari Hitachi' - that is genius sir, vote up from me!
yeah I know it's obnoxious to be exacting about language, word usage etc. but in the past couple of years seems as if the word "cringe" started appearing everywhere. it's always used as a synonym for "wince," even though their meanings are not similar. something which induces feelings of disgust or sympathetic pain: does this have anything to do with being servile or obsequious?
Both the original and this ad are brilliant. Imagine how much more fun the tech world would be if everything was presented as a "Scholastic Rock" episode.
No kidding! I LOVE THESE! This marketing guy is a genius. It's the perfect mix of weird and disturbing for a viral video and it gets millions of view! great for advertising...

300 movies.
Are these movies 3.3 gigs each?
I don't know of many 1 hour movies... Other than Phone Booth.
Thanks, Hitachi. Really, thanks, Hitachi. You made my day a bit more bizarre.
Almost as catchy... As...
Get Perpendicular!!!
This one comes in Disco...

Anyone for a Fruity Oaty Bar?
No.
Okay, tell me Bit didn't come straight out of Schoolhouse Rock. He should be singing, "I'm just a bit, and I'm sittin' on perpendicular hill..."
I was just going to say the same thing...Both this and 'Get Perpendicular' must have at least in part have been inspired by the old 'I'm only a bill...' sketch from Schoolhouse Rock.
Well, thank you Captain Obvious...
DUH!
Hitachi's design department is ass.
All of their power tools look like they are trying to look cool before being funcitonal.
Green looking alien things that scream "I can't afford real power tools".
'ass' as an adjective.
ah like it
I hear TRON's bit saying "no" right from inside my computer.
i believe the better term is "psychedelics"
Now this seems like something for little kids, but if I heard my kid talking about watching a video with "Joey Joystick", I'm not sure what I'd think.
So where's Mr. Vagina to say you can store x amount of hours of porn on this hard-drive?
Think we have to file this one with Nimoy's "Bilbo Baggins" video.
..At least it's not anime!
How about they release higher capacity hard drives instead of trippy videos?
Seagate just came out with a 1.5 TB drive, didn't Hitachi promise 5TB by 2010?
The joystick guy reminds me a lot of Homsar. o_O
f'ing ridiculous.
