Intel's dual-core Atom 330 processor to ship in Q4 2008
Bad news, Atom fans. That dual-core nugget of netbook-powering goodness that you were so looking forward to seeing in Q3 won't begin shipping until Q4. According to some data picked up by Fudzilla, the Atom 330 will only be debuting in Q3 (September 21st, to be precise), but it isn't scheduled to get a shipping label until a few months later. Also of note, we're told that the chip will sell (at some place in the supply chain) for $43, but don't count on those savings being completely passed onto you.[Thanks, sinai]

Oh and another new line of EEE products are launched!
Oh I cant wait!
/sarcasm
Homeboy @ Jul 24th 2008 7:04PM
It's sickening isn't it? With each new CPU the EEE price gets bumped up $100-200. So this one being a dual core tossed into a 10 inch EEE I won't be surprised if the price tag ends up a few bucks short of $1000.
nerdtalker @ Jul 24th 2008 6:24PM
Atom is amazing from a market perspective. I recently configured and ordered an atom-based desktop at newegg for ~$230 shipped. Including case, mobo, HD and DVD drives.
Performance isn't awe-inspiring, but for the price point it runs XP at a reasonable speed and will do everything we need and more. It's a testament to the thing's 4 watt TDP that the northbridge cooler is bigger than the passively cooled atom.
David D @ Jul 24th 2008 6:27PM
Great, just another crappy chip for UMPC/Netbook/MID makers to shove into their products. The Atom is too slow and has too little memory support to be powerful at all. We should all be looking to Via or Qualcomm for mobile processor technologies. Via has a fine chip that is already used in quite a few UMPCs. They just need to develop a dual core version for me to be all in on it. If ASUS can't come up with anything besides a new EEE to make out of this, it will be the end of any SHRED of credibility they EVER had.

Check it out.
I've found the person on Engadget who knows the least.
Yay!

@David D
First of all I'd just like to make sure you understand that you're an idiot. If there's a market that you can make money from, why not enter it? Intel can make money from the netbook market, so they're taking advantage of it. You don't like that they're making low-power CPUs for some obviously stupid reason that you don't really mention other than the foolish opinion that it will ruin their credibility (unless you're talking about ASUS's credibility, which some say has already disappeared, but this isn't an article about ASUS). You want Via or Qualcomm to make a dual core mobile CPU, but if Intel attempts to do such a thing before the other companies, you find some issue with it. Intel already leads in high-power consumer CPUs, so it is only reasonable that they now move into the low-power CPU industry.
THE END
David D @ Jul 24th 2008 7:25PM
Thank you for the information, but Intel is making very little on the Atom ATM. It isn't all that profitable, k? THAT is part of where my statement comes from.
David D @ Jul 24th 2008 7:35PM
Just because I have a different viewpoint on things doesn't mean I have to get pissed on does it?
kccboy2004 @ Jul 24th 2008 7:36PM
@David D,
You clearly have NO idea what you are talking about. What you are saying is ABSOLUTELY, objectively WRONG.
The Intel Atom chip is fantastic. The D945GCLF is a wonderful board. I am amazed how fast mine is.
I hope that no one is deceived by your IGNORANCE.
kccboy2004 @ Jul 24th 2008 7:44PM
@David D,
The reason people piss on you....;
It is not that you have a different viewpoint. It is the fact that your viewpoint is WRONG. Factually incorrect. You attempt to pass off your statement as fact, not a matter of opinion.
If the VIA chipset was so good for a start, the waiting list for an HP2133 would be Dec 31. Demand would outstrip supply.
Now, everyone wants VIA to do well, but they gotta compete on a more timely basis; get the Isaiah chipout in quantity at the right price at the right time. The Intel D945GCLF is available at less than $60 with the board !! And it is bitchingly quick, make no mistake.
Note Well: I am not knocking the Via chipset. BECAUSE.... I don't have one...
If you have both boards, tell me about them.
Making spurious unfounded statements pisses people off.
kccboy2004 @ Jul 24th 2008 8:01PM
@David D,
and another thing.... how do you know how much Intel are making on the Atom ? or are you just going to say..."well it stands to reason.....".
Bull.
What accounting standard are we working on now ?
Are we using Absorption costing ?
Is the Atom contributing to Intel's Corporate Fixed Overhead ?
Does the production add a significant step cost to Intel?
What is the opportunity cost of Atom R&D & Production ?
Was there synchronicity involved in the decision to make ?
Do you foresee further advantages from entering in the miniturisation race ?
Do you think that Intel should wait at the door for all the other entrants to come out and proclaim, Intel you were so clever for not going into that sector, it makes no money ?
Do you see a reversal in trends, do you think that we will all start to want bigger and bigger PC's, requiring more and more power ?
And you think that there is no profit in miniturisation of "Micro" technology ?
If Intel make $5 pure profit on a board, after contiributing to coorporate fixed overhead, (by whatever accounting method you like), and sells 500 million of them over 5 years. How much does that amount to ?
Hey !!! Maybe even they should start using Atom processors in Servers. Maybe someone should suggest that idea...... Oh piss... someone already has.
Everyone is really excited about how much money Intel is going to make out of the Atom. Sell your shares, please !!!

David D's avatar is a real photo taken after kccboy2004 beat his face in with that comment.
hrt @ Jul 25th 2008 2:43AM
Judging by the angle of the shot (avatar), the effect, I think we can guess the program he used, and its OS. We now know why his comment was so ignorant.
Oinquer @ Jul 25th 2008 5:17AM
maybe...Mac'ish? thats the only OS i know that does that on the fly....lol
Anyway..David youre totally wrong...the Intel d945gclf its a very nice board.
you get a 945 chipset and a 1.6Ghz ATOM for 50-60 @ and it has a very nice performance, ohhh and i know what im talking about...worked with VIA motherboards (those with C7 processor) for about an year...5 days a week..doing everything...programming, Gimp editing, website edition...etc...
Now switched to d945gclf and hell...from my benchmarks it pretty much beats intel celeron 1.5Ghz or stays right behind.
Ohhh and i can backup my statement, since i did a CPU benchmark in Puppy linux 4.
sinai @ Jul 24th 2008 6:39PM
yer welcome engadget...
also, if the atom only costs $29, why the hell does the EEE PC cost $700?
huh @ Jul 24th 2008 7:13PM
And if the Atom is so low power, how come the battery life of these devices, typically with SSD, 4 and 6 cell batteries, isn't that much better, if at all, than Core 2 Duo based computers?
Cory @ Jul 24th 2008 7:51PM
It's definitely not $700, check Newegg, you can get one for $550.
sinai @ Jul 24th 2008 9:50PM
obviously, someone hasn't seen the price of the EEE 1000
NeoDarkSaver @ Jul 24th 2008 6:41PM
i just hope the price of final products can stay low, or go lower.
BigD145 @ Jul 24th 2008 6:44PM
Yeah, we certainly haven't seen the savings of the Atom so far.
digitallysick @ Jul 24th 2008 6:50PM
Wish it was in the netbooks already, that would be nice
Ian @ Jul 24th 2008 9:19PM
Will the dual core fit in extisting MBs using the present single core Atom?
kccboy2004 @ Jul 24th 2008 8:28PM
@Ian, the answer is YES.
peasoup @ Jul 25th 2008 4:05AM
That's Great news! :)

I personally don't care for the dual-core version. A single-core atom is fine, the sort of things I will be doin on my acer aspire one DEFINATELY wil NOT be multi-threaded... so who cares about the extra core? It'll just be wasted battery. For the very few times when what i'm doin might branch out into two threads the atom has hyperthreading.
i'll stick to singlecore thanx.
hrt @ Jul 25th 2008 2:43AM
I think you make a very good point daniel. I would agree the type of stuff I'll be using my Eee for(waiting on my 901 to arrive) won't use a dual core to potential. Hell, I'm not even seeing two of my q6600s cores used in most stuff I do!
Kelmon @ Jul 25th 2008 3:26AM
No offense, but I'm going to take the reports from a publication calling itself "Fudzilla" with the biggest pinch of salt I can possibly find. Might as well call yourselves "DAMNED BIG LIES" and be done with it. Still, that honesty at least would make a refreshing change. The UK Daily Mail, for example, could call itself the Daily Scaremonger.
Feel free to submit your own suggestions...
aldo @ Jul 26th 2008 4:36PM
Hey (nerdtalker) How about a 200$ PC with better performance but lower power savings:

@David D
My Atom rules with its low energy usage I now have a web server that consumers less then 70W, next to my Phenom 9850 + 3870 Vid card that require a 520W PSU thats not to bad at all and Linux sure flies :)
@lan
I wouldn't totally count on it depending on the new TDP (Case in point the AMD 780G not being able to run the high end Phenoms with the 125W TDP), at the cost of probably $80-90 for the motherboard and chip that's the route I'd go IMO, and it may have other upgrades processor aside (I'm hoping for a version with the PCI-E slot but that would probably severely hurt there Celeron sales, or even Native raid in the chipset).
As for the dual cores being delayed I'm wearing my sad face, as that will be the first upgrade my new web server will be getting :) I wonder what the TDP will be on the 330...
Wendy @ Oct 12th 2008 9:53PM
I do have a question about the EEE PC 1000h, are you able, by any chance, to upgrade the video card? I've tried looking around, but it was futile. I could not find anything related. Every time I go on www.systemrequirementslab.com I always feel so down because I'm not able to play any games except WoW without having to decrease the settings on a major account.
Is the graphic card integrated in the motherboard? Can someone answer my concerns?
Please and thank you...!!!
