Apple's Push-like
MobileMe launch has been such a debacle that they're now in damage control mode. As a result, some poor soul has been tasked by Steve Jobs to post status updates "every other day or so." The first update is already revealing:
- Last Friday, 1% of MobileMe subscribers were affected by a "serious problem" with one of Apple's mail server.
- Limited web access has been restored to those accounts but full access won't be sorted until next week.
- Of these 1%, Apple admits to losing "approximately 10%" of the messages received between July 16 and July 18.
For the rest of you MobileMe subscribers, Apple has added server capacity, tuned the software to scale better, and fixed over 70 bugs to date. So the question is, how's MobileMe working for you?
MobileMe, better or worse?| Stable as a rock for me now. | 4739 (18.5%) |

| Still seeing hiccups but I'm not giving up. | 3895 (15.2%) |

| $99 per year for this!? Fail. | 16981 (66.3%) |

And this is supposed to be the blackberry killer/exchange for regular consumers? What a joke. This has been some of the most hilarious events ever. I guess Karma came back to bite Apple on the ass after all the gloating
First the 2.0 bricked my iPod Touch, which sucked not to have my music on me. Finally, I got through to install 2.0 on it and went and checked out the apps. Ugh, mostly crap stuff, and I think its hilarious the amount of Apps they boast yet they have stuff like multiple flashlight apps, though the iTunes remote was kinda neat. However, after a while I realized I missed my jailbroken stuff (Orb, iBlackjack, NES emulator, wallpaper/themes). After going through a bit of crap to downgrade I am back to 1.14 and jailbroken.
My BIS account has never lost emails, 1.14 jailbroken firmware never freezes on me or slows down like 2.0. I really think Apple has bit off more then they can chew when they expanded as they did into the mobile market. They are being stretched too thin and it shows. UAC-like crap (OTA appstore), MobileMe disaster (not syncing Calendars?!?! come ON! Losing emails, inexcusable), activation problems, having to sift through AppStore crap software (weren't APPLE supposed to do that?!), etc.
"Steve Jobs should accept responsibility and resign..." --LondonConsultant
Brilliant! Apple has trouble rolling out their latest light-years-ahead-of-the-market offerings, which could not possibly exist without the drive and vision of Steve Jobs, and this Einstein thinks Steve should resign. He probably favors a third term for George Bush, too!
I do use mobileme. I did not have a problem with the launch.
Basically, I am happy with the transition. My contacts and calender are now syncing wirelessly. This is great.
Its not complete though, I still really need the subscribed calenders to work. I hope that can happen soon.
I don't think it is worthwhile for everyone. I like it as a family file server. We have a small business and have all the files on iDisk. This way everyone can reach them anytime and its a mounted disk. Also we use the shared calender for scheduling.
Finally, web galleries are great. My 76 yo mother can publish photos to the web with a simple drag - you can't really beat that.
P.S. My MobileMe service has been working fairly well since the day after the launch except for a brief Calendar malfunction. I did not personally experience any email problems whatsoever. I've noticed that the speed of the service has been steadily increasing over the last week on my computer. Web galleries are updated instantly and the whole thing seems very responsive. What a shame that Apple spoiled the introduction of a major new initiative with such uncharacteristic ineptitude. But Steve Jobs resign? You MUST be kidding!!!
I am the a business user of the 3G/2.0. I stopped using MobileMe after it deciding I have a new PC whenever I change locations of my Thinkpad between home & work. MobileMe seems to get confused about the different networks or the fact I have a docking station at work & not at home. Thinking this is a new PC after a location change it proceeds to resync all my 6800 contacts as if it was the first time. This consumes the performace of my iPhone for the next 30-40 minutes effectively disabling from being used for anything else during that time. I can't afford that twice a day!
BTW - I do not use Exchange as we're a start up company if 65 people.
I gave up. I disabled MobileMe and back to "good ol' syncing".

I've had major Sync problems (all of my birthdays and anniversaries in Outlook show up in Mobile me one day off!!!!) and syncing a second PC completely failed. Also, the performance of the web app stinks -- especailly the Calendar.
Mobile Me is OK, still has a lot of problems. Other than the Push functionality, it is kinda worthless. With free alternatives like Hotmail, GMail, Yahoo Mail, Exchange...... Apple should just make it free already. I understood the first week woes, but 3 weeks later and they are still have problems? I think the guys at Apple got a little too cocky launching all of this at the same time as the iPhone 3g.
