PS3 homebrew capabilities inevitably leads to Pong
If you'll recall, the evolution of homebrew on the Wii started out quite similar to this. First comes the Hello World proof of concept, then comes Pong. It would just be wrong to unfold otherwise, right? Dragula96, the same guru who whipped up the original homebrew hack, has now introduced 2 Player Pong 1.0 -- the first notable game to take advantage of the Java devkit (at least, that's how it looks from here). Currently, the collisions are "very basic" and further tweaks are necessary before it's perfect, but it should be stable enough to take you to some sort of blissful state for now.

NO. You are NOT first. STOP FIRST POSTING.
Aguiluz @ Jul 27th 2008 1:56PM
???
Anyway, wake me up if you have ported PCSX2. But that's a start!
Bryant @ Jul 27th 2008 1:57PM
Bah. I kinda wish I could delete this since no one replied underneath yelling "FIRST!"
Seriously though, do people tend to do pong as their hello world into homebrew because it's relatively easy? I'd like to see something complex as a hello world for once, even though that goes against the idea behind a hello world program.
Ankan Bhowmick @ Jul 27th 2008 2:01PM
I thumb thee up for thy wit :)
Haikibutsu @ Jul 27th 2008 2:02PM
We choose to program Pong. We choose to program Pong in this decade and do the other things, not only because they are easy, but because they are hard!

Would've been worse if somebody had actually beaten you with a "FIRST!"
crazypenguin @ Jul 27th 2008 2:02PM
on the wii, i'd be happy to mod it for some reason. but i just for some reason find it difficult for homebrew to do that well on the ps3. besides if you don't have a system update you can't be connected to the playstation network. PS3 + Homebrew = LAME
CognizantKid @ Jul 27th 2008 2:05PM
Aww, here you go Bryant:
First!
Saad Rabia @ Jul 27th 2008 2:09PM
Will it beat Crysis?
liv @ Jul 27th 2008 3:15PM
FAIL!

w00t! Pong! My favorite game!!
Carl Vitullo @ Jul 27th 2008 2:23PM

player 1 really sucks at pong.
Carl Vitullo @ Jul 27th 2008 6:03PM
seriously, 5-46?
man, get some thumbs.
Zeth Ethereal @ Jul 27th 2008 2:24PM
Custom Firmware FTW!!!!!!
hiko36 @ Jul 28th 2008 6:33AM
Custom Firmware? That's the PSP... The PS3 is only capable of Java Exploits currently...
Kevin @ Jul 27th 2008 2:32PM
Whoa, Whoa, Whoa.
The proof of concept from Dracula96 was a fake.
Just a UT3 mod.
The only homebrew capabilities is that the PS3 can run BD-J games.
Imran Hussain @ Jul 27th 2008 2:32PM
Lol, best use of the Cell Processor :P
Saad Rabia @ Jul 27th 2008 2:35PM
Is this good or bad? Should we be worried?
EdZ @ Jul 27th 2008 2:52PM
Can't you already install Linux on the PS3? Yes, you're under the thumb of the hypervisor (lose an SPU, no direct GPU access) but last I heard that had been worked around.
BowserUSC @ Jul 27th 2008 3:00PM
Finally a game worth buying a PS3 for.
Jamesology @ Jul 27th 2008 8:49PM
Well, obviously you're happy that it still does not beat you favorite game of Hannah Montana.
Tony @ Jul 27th 2008 3:07PM
Is that a complaint?
Joe @ Jul 27th 2008 3:13PM
BWAHAHA!!! That's so cute!!
Srsly... WTF!? Pong?! Really??

Whaaat??
collegekid13 @ Jul 27th 2008 3:29PM
i can feel my ps3 crying
Lloytron @ Jul 27th 2008 3:34PM
Wasn't that proof of concept an early April fools joke?
NoAndThen @ Jul 27th 2008 4:27PM
(bows down in prayer)
PLEASE make XBMC for ps3. I don't think I'd ever leave my house again.
Actually, maybe they shouldn't then..
jaalin @ Jul 27th 2008 4:58PM
i'm guessing it's pong because it's easy to program - someone whos taking the time to code crysis as the first proof of concept is going to get beaten to the punch by another guy who took 30 minutes to code pong
farfisa @ Jul 27th 2008 5:24PM
Throw it on the PSN, see if it sells.
XenoX101 @ Jul 27th 2008 5:56PM
For anyone that thought the PS3 was a waste of money. Here is clear proof, that it isn't. Nothing quite like 1080p Pong.
jamesdr1968 @ Jul 27th 2008 9:04PM
So, after weeks of hand ringing, I picked up the XBOX 360 elite yesterday. Why that over the PS3? I was on the fence, but honestly it came down to the fact that most of my friends have the 360 and I'd rather be in with them than the odd guy out. But what about the almight blu-ray???? Um, yea. Looks cool, but I really don't watch enough movies to justify seeing the nose pores of some bad actor. Anyway, my son and I are loving it so far. Nuff said.
Technophile @ Jul 27th 2008 9:48PM
Is this on topic? Why every time someone talk about ps3 or 360 it turns out to a console war.(not only your post) If you buy a 360 and loved it great, but stop trying to convince yourself that you made the right choice specially when it's not on topic.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jul 28th 2008 1:09AM
well so you are syaing you like to pay for a service that should be free and one that breaks down often? Hmm psn went online in November of 2006 and hasn't been offline due to any type of failures. Key word failure. Its something you must get used to now. because that xbox is going to have a failure on you, RROD anyone. then the customer service is going to be a big failure to you also. then the three month wait to get your system back only to have it have a failure on you again. Ya should have gotten the ,IHO. Seriously will the 360 have games like MAG(256 players online at once)? Ummm no, because it can't handle it. Will it have cheap imaginative games to grab the non gamer type crowd? no because its got a age and genre specific market that it goes for. will the games be ok for your kid? Maybe not seeing as most of xbox's games are 18+. you got screwed and failed in your choice of console.
FAILURE!
shoulda went with you gut and be the stand out.
neofolklore @ Jul 28th 2008 8:06AM
but the xbox360 can handle 256 players at once................it just doesn't, nobody's done it yet, they don't want to waste their time.
Battlefield bad company can run X amount of players online, but you'll be damned to even find a ranked match.
name one real difference between the two systems that requires MAG to be run on the PS3.
the cell? every time a developer has said the ps3 was all powerful and only it could run their game....... well Final Fantasy XIII 's "superior game engine" is now going to run on xbox360, just for making a point.
but hey, at least it can play pong right?
Neebs @ Jul 27th 2008 9:20PM
Actually...there may be a reason for that should be brought to some attention...

Actually right after I posted I realized that it was off topic. Sorry bout dat. I almost posted some Obama/McCain comments too!!! Crazy!
Ryan Trevisol @ Jul 27th 2008 10:02PM
Could someone please point me to an instance where homebrew on a console actually resulted in better games than were released from game companies?
I'm not being sarcastic and saying it hasn't happened, so please let me know.
Because homebrew on ANY console should be to either restore lost functionality (i.e. software compatibility with PS1&2, but seriously, get a PS2 for $50), or allow independent devs to produce games, right? is there another purpose for hacking a game console that I'm not aware of? Especially one that runs linux OTB?
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jul 28th 2008 1:15AM
PSP homebrew has thousands of games that are better than studio made games. go hack ur psp and then get Squarez for psp. It is very addictive and very well polished for a hb game. there are many others, even applications that are better than what sony has given us. I know, I have four psp's and have been using hb since day 1.
tekdroid @ Jul 28th 2008 6:34AM
PSP and DS have heaps of interesting stuff happening with homebrew, and don't forget apps too. Not just games.
'Better' or 'worse' is down to taste. Certainly some better homebrew games and apps on PSP than offered for sale (and certainly some worse), not to mention plenty that simply don't exist for sale, so having them is nice.
jamesdr1968 @ Jul 27th 2008 10:10PM
ryan: I really think it's just a hobby thing. Yes, it's fun to see these games but they usually do not carry much long term appeal. How long can you play PONG on your PS3? Seriously.
andres @ Jul 27th 2008 11:41PM
you gotta start somewhere, im sure their ultimate goal was not to play pong.
jmdsdf @ Jul 27th 2008 10:52PM
And now Snake v1.1! Although they're trivial games, I'm impressed that someone has figured out a way to accomplish this. :)
andres @ Jul 27th 2008 11:40PM
snake?!
SNAKE!!!
SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!!!!!!!
Smudgy @ Jul 27th 2008 11:49PM

Personally I love having Linux on my PS3. It was an easy install and I have Snes9x, Genesis, and even MAME installed and all runs good.
Ben @ Jul 28th 2008 12:07AM
So how do I get this on my ps3?
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jul 28th 2008 1:12AM
This is kinda homebrew but not really in the true sense of the word. This can be used with readily available premade tools. homebrew is about making your own from scratch. hence the name and what it implies. This is nice and I doubt any emulators of great size will be ported. but who knows maybe someone will find an eploit in their searches within the ps3hardcode.
wolf @ Jul 28th 2008 1:14AM
ryan: it is more about emulators and utilities than game dev. It would be nice if there could be some good game devs once a unit is hacked, but it is usually not the main concern. The big thing as I see it right now is that it might be neat to hack the ps3, but considering that I can install linux on it (haven't done it yet- want to put a bigger HD in and waiting for a good sale), it works damn well streaming media from my home network, has an allright browser (that is one thing that could be improved w/ homebrew), supports xvid and divx well and games are sooo huge that it really isn't worth pirating them- the only reason to hack it is to explore other unlicensed uses of the cell processor in it and experimenting with the sixaxis controls. but if someone dumps their old 20 gig for dirt I would try having a hacked and a non-hacked one for fun.
