Toshiba intros 'stylish' line of hard drives to match your purse, coke habit
Toshiba -- clearly feeling the heat from other fashionable external hard drive makers -- has introduced a new line of disks guaranteed to bring on a neon flashback from your disco days (or Eurotrash nightmares). The three new models come decked out in the 160GB "Gecko Green," 250GB "Hot Rod Red," and 320GB "Carbon Grey" variations, with USB 2.0 ports and 8MB buffers on-board. The drives are Mac and PC compatible, and are available now for $89.99, $179.99, and $199.99, respectively.
Update: Apparently these drives have been out for a little while (thanks commenters!), so feel free to quiet any alarms that may have been sounded.

I'm pretty sure these drives are already out, as I currently have a 320 GB one attached to my MacBook. Overall, they are great.
David @ Jul 29th 2008 2:27PM
Yep. I bought one over 2 months ago. I have the 250GB red one.
Jonathan @ Jul 29th 2008 2:27PM
Yeah, I've been using mine now for over a month. It is pretty stylish, on top of being 320 Gigs of storage for a good price.
OneLove @ Jul 29th 2008 3:15PM

They've been available for a while now, here's a link: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Drives-storage/sem/rpsm/c/1/catOid/-12973/N/20012961+20012973+40001555/link/ref/link/ref/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do

These have been out so long, they've already gone on sale! I got the 160GB for $60 at Office Depot last month.

The better deal is the Western Digital Passport 320G over at CC.com for $130... Link: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Western-Digital-My-Passport-Essential-320GB-Portable-Hard-Drive-Midnight-Black-WDME3200TN/sem/rpsm/oid/201493/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Well I guess CC.com also has the 320G Toshiba on sale as well for the same price. Whatever.. I got the WD about a month ago and couldn't be happier. Plus it seemed to be slightly smaller than the Toshiba equivalent. I believe the warranties are identical (3yrs) for what its worth. Also, I found the perfect neoprene case to store these drives in (WD and Toshibas) it's the "Kodak PoGO Case." It's meant to store their small portable photo printer, but it fits these hard drives like a glove with a little tiny divider inside perfect for store the cable behind the drive. I'm telling you its a PERFECT fit, trust me.

These have been out for a while. I've seen these at the various electronic stores for at least a month now.
There was something else that Engadget had an article on that wasn't exactly recent...Maybe you guys need to do a little bit of research before making something seem "new."
thenetavenger @ Jul 29th 2008 2:55PM
New? I have one on my desk that I bought at a Wal-Mart none-the-less about a month ago. (Was on trip and 3AM needed a quick drive for work)
They are nice drives. You can probably find a WesternDigital close to the same price;however, but the performance of the Toshiba drive smokes past my other USB drives, which was unexpected as I even have a 7200 and 10000 rpm 3.5 USB external that can't keep up with the new Toshiba.(The USB inteface design and Cache on the Toshiba make the difference.)
They are tiny, light, silent, and even SATA/USB drives inside.
kjb434 @ Jul 29th 2008 2:49PM
Yeah, I've used one for my coke habbit for months! HAHA
Mike @ Jul 29th 2008 3:01PM
it was a typo they were referring to their cock habits
Avi Mehta @ Jul 29th 2008 2:54PM
I also own one the gray one :).. it costed 120$.
funny post i'd say :)
justin @ Jul 29th 2008 3:16PM
As if an Engadget staffer could afford a coke habit.
Joshua.JWilliams @ Jul 29th 2008 3:33PM
This is old, old news -- these Toshiba (as everyone else has stated) drives have been out for quite some time.
I recently purchased a 2.5" 250GB SimpleTech, for a heck of a deal $59 - because it was pink aka "Bubblegum"-- time for a new HDD enclosure. And I saw these Toshiba hard drives available as well -- the black enclosure with red stripes.
anonymouspimp @ Jul 29th 2008 4:26PM
If anyone else has one of these, could they please announce it here, immediately? I am not sure the point has gotten across yet.
everunman @ Jul 29th 2008 4:47PM
Im with pcmike, check with Amazon regually and you can pick up a 320gb wd for between us$106-120, many colours, $199 is way over the top for the Toshiba
Larry @ Jul 29th 2008 5:25PM
I picked up the 320GB model at Circuit City for $120 about 3 months ago.
fd @ Sep 27th 2008 7:05PM
Got the 320GB back in june 08 and the drive just died last week (sept 08). I expect a drive to show signs of wear after some time, but sudden death within 4 months makes me feel like Toshiba should not even be in this market in the first place.
