Never one to let its rival Samsung get too far ahead, LG is rolling out its
long awaited local-dimming LED-backlit 1080p LCD (formerly known as the
47LG75) now dubbed the 47LG90. Rocking a $3,599 pricetag when hits shelves in September -- we'll assume it missed the
original Q2 2007 projections due to our request for 120Hz motion processing, now included -- a spec sheet from LG Canada indicates a 500cd/m2 brightness rating, 3 HDMI v1.3 inputs, Intelligent Sensor to adjust for lighting conditions, Invisible Speakers, ISFccc calibration ready, USB port and LG's SimpLink control technology. The "unique teardrop design" with blue accents encloses a 5-inch thick package that can't be as slim as its
LGX cousin, but we're thinking the LED-enhanced view from the front will make up for it. On paper, the Samsung
9 Series seems to have the edge on price and features, but we'll have to wait and see if reality matches the specs.

I'm just wondering what kind of ms these LCDs their making are getting.
Rob @ Aug 1st 2008 12:07PM
What a bunch of marketing bs.
Pochi @ Aug 1st 2008 2:21PM
Truth.
From what I've read, every company has it's OWN way of measuring contrast ratio. I didn't fully believe it, but I recently (as in Tuesday) bought a TV. A Samsung 40 inch (the 330 model). It claimed 8,000:1. The TV was a total piece of shit (ugly, bad performance, etc) so I returned it for a 40 inch Bravia claiming 2,500:1. The Sony's black levels are far deeper and better.
On top of that, every LG I have ever seen looks like absolute garbage. So who cares WHAT they say at this point...?
duh @ Aug 1st 2008 3:03PM
Untruth.
If you new anything about image quality, you'd know that contrast levels and black levels are two completely different aspects of image quality. Additionally, no one should buy the lowest model of TV in a manufacturer's range and expect the image quality to be in an upper tier. I'm positive any Samsung in the 550 range could match and/or blow many Sony models away, and for less than a comparable Sony model
FYI:
brightness = black level
contrast = picture
The Joker @ Aug 1st 2008 4:35PM
Oh yeah, well I heard Sony is coming out with a HDTV with eleventy billion to 1 contrast. And Samsung is making a double infinity to 1 contrast HDTV.
Pochi @ Aug 1st 2008 4:40PM
@duh
I dunno. Judging by these...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_ratio
...it seems like the contrast ratio would have a very serious effect on the black levels on a television set. EIther way, the picture quality is FAR superior in every respect, all things considered.
And I am comparing two televisions that are in the same price range with the exact same screen size. It's perfectly acceptable for me to put them side by side and declare a winner if I want to. It's a fair comparison.
Puntaro @ Aug 1st 2008 12:20PM
LG came up with crazy contrast ratio every year.
phanbouy @ Aug 1st 2008 1:16PM
...but not anymore?
scott @ Aug 1st 2008 12:25PM
man, i can't wait till this becomes a standard feature. infinite blacks and the such for under $1000 would be sweeeeeet.
konshuss @ Aug 1st 2008 12:38PM

deftone @ Aug 1st 2008 1:46PM

lol wow. touche.
Ryan Trevisol @ Aug 1st 2008 12:44PM
I think we need a new unit of contrast measure before we end up sounding like 6 year olds.
My TV has a 16 ga-billion to 1 contrast ratio!
Oinquer @ Aug 4th 2008 7:14AM
....yeah rightttt and im santa claus...
maybe i am?
Richie @ Aug 1st 2008 1:36PM
why don't they just buy you a box seat at a game instead?
neihrick @ Aug 1st 2008 1:46PM
the 9 series has 276 LEDs
the LG90 has 1,536 LEDs which will (potentially) have better contrast with white text on black
Kev @ Aug 1st 2008 2:35PM
Wrong, the 9 Series has 276 LED Clusters. It is supposed to have over 2,000 total LED's.
ds @ Aug 1st 2008 3:43PM
Yeah the 9 Series is packing 2,160 LEDs IIRC.
Both TVs use them in clusters. Either way I have not seen any LG LCD that I would take over a Samsung, but I am interested in checking this thing out.
ds @ Aug 1st 2008 4:05PM
@konshuss
Best smart-ass reply I have read in quite awhile. Thanks for the laugh!
AlphaTeam @ Aug 1st 2008 5:45PM
Is this the Scarlet TV they made a TV series about?
Nihility @ Aug 1st 2008 9:01PM
1,000,000 to 1 bullshit ratio.
Platinum_Skeet @ Aug 6th 2008 7:08PM
I'll buy one when the price is under $2,000...
