Life with PlayStation coming this month, not last
So, July ended without the launch of Life with PlayStation as promised during the E3 keynote. The delay is due to "a few procedural matters" causing the launch to push into "August." That means either today or more likely, nearer the 31st, PS3 users will get their hands on Sony's new globe interface for accessing real-time content such as news and weather from around the world. Hoozah?

HuGo, be lucky you don't know what sarcasm is, because that was the worst use of sarcasm I have seen in a while—and I read Digg!

Well isnt this grand.. I turn on my PS3 today for once...I wiped away the cob webs, almost got bitten by a daddy long legs spider, to find out that there is still no LIFE on playstation.. What Is LIFE without shelter aka a HOME?
Paulmichael @ Aug 1st 2008 3:44AM
Apparently, YOU have a brain tumor that affects your brain, PC-Engi...I mean Hugo.

You do know that daddy long legs' fangs are not long enough to puncture your skin, right?

i will come there and beat the s**t out of you if u say that again!!! DO YOU UNDERSTAND!!!
steven @ Aug 1st 2008 3:31AM
the military developed the internet.
but i believe energy should be put to developing cutting edge game play, and leave the content feeds to computers, which perform the task with the slightest of ease.
AJ in the East Bay @ Aug 1st 2008 3:32AM
Sony should stop providing launch dates or launch months and just surprise people with an update. I don't know what the heck is wrong with them.
Paulmichael @ Aug 1st 2008 3:47AM
Have you SEEN the PS Blog? There's nothing but complaints and fanboys screaming for this or that. The only way to shut them up is to appease them with news like release dates and such...Can't blame Sony for trying, I guess.
Ayman @ Aug 1st 2008 4:10AM
Also there would be panic and chaos in the streets of Gotham, unless they announce it in the news....
(WHY SO SERIOUS!!!!!!!) "Joker"
Erasure25 @ Aug 1st 2008 1:22PM
...because no other company in the world has ever missed a launch date before? I'm sure you have been late to a dinner party before (assuming you get invited to them).
Brad @ Aug 1st 2008 3:56PM
Or they could just turn on their Wii, which has this feature for both news and weather.
But that's cool.
HuGo @ Aug 1st 2008 3:33AM
Dude do you have a brain tumor that's effecting your brain?

I think its his brain tumor acting up.

What the Douche I was commenting some guy who was ranting on about Sony and comparing it to Apple...Yet magically his comment is gone...maybe I'm the one with the tumor!
Paulmichael @ Aug 1st 2008 11:23AM
And I tried replying to your post but it went up as its own comment... Ah, I see what's going on here: Engadget is the one that has a brain tumor!!!

ace1000_x @ Aug 1st 2008 4:14AM
The Wii has this feature, with the globe doesn't it?
YoYoYo @ Aug 1st 2008 6:18AM
Yup - I don't know if it shipped with it or not, but it was definitely present by Christmas '07. Works pretty well, too, in my humble opinion. I'd kind of rather have tabbed browsers that can go farther than the regular news searches, but it works well for what it does.
ChuChu @ Aug 1st 2008 11:45AM
Yeah it's kind of curious isn't it: The explosion of this huge network called "The Internet" which makes borders and physical location all but irrelevant and years after the fact we have people trying to inject borders and physical location back into the equation. It almost seems like a regression if anything.
phinnvr6 @ Aug 2nd 2008 5:19PM
Yea this feature for the Wii is one of it's good firmware features. Still glad to see it coming to the PS3 though
Mark @ Aug 1st 2008 5:31AM
The whole concept of news on a globe just seems completely wrong. Are people meant to rotate the whole world just to see what headlines are out there? How do they know which ones are important or not. It seems like a pointless gimmick to me. I'd prefer international news to be prioritized by importance, not by its position on the globe.
Phil @ Aug 1st 2008 6:10AM
Well, who knows...maybe it does?
Wait til you try it I guess.
YoYoYo @ Aug 1st 2008 6:18AM
"The whole concept of news on a globe just seems completely wrong. Are people meant to rotate the whole world just to see what headlines are out there?"
It actually works amazingly well on the Wii. It's a very, very user-friendly interface style. Think Google Earth with a Google News overlay, but more stylish.
"How do they know which ones are important or not. It seems like a pointless gimmick to me. I'd prefer international news to be prioritized by importance, not by its position on the globe."
But it already is - The major news sites ala CNN and BBC already break political, military, and environmental news down on a regional basis, and then importance. If Missouri shows the top five Google News hits for the state and then you zoom in and can see the top five for Kathmandu, or say, Missouri zoomed in to Kansas City or St. Louis.
ipubs bastard child @ Aug 1st 2008 7:26AM
@Mark news is mostly prioritised by media agencies own agenda's. Re political or social. For example. Black girl dies or goes missing, nobody cares. Cute white girl goes missing, the whole world is brought to its knees in a media frenzy. The media is never impartial. Even those that claim it to be. At least this way you can decide for yourself what is important and what isn't. That doesn't detract from the way it is written (eg biased) but thats something that will never be wiped out.
News is a powerful tool and it leads to mobs of people taking up opinions of idiots because they do not understand that the sytem is making them think what they want them to think. Sounds quite matrix like but its true.
Reading aggregated news is a good way to get a better opinion on stories.
Andir3.0 @ Aug 1st 2008 9:29AM
"For example. Black girl dies or goes missing, nobody cares. Cute white girl goes missing, the whole world is brought to its knees in a media frenzy."
Everyone keeps bringing up the white girl/black girl example, but nobody has fired 50 Cent, Snoop or countless others for saying nappy hos and the other word.
Bias goes both ways.
Erasure25 @ Aug 1st 2008 1:30PM
"Everyone keeps bringing up the white girl/black girl example, but nobody has fired 50 Cent, Snoop or countless others for saying nappy hos and the other word."
Are you seriously comparing the death of a black girl to name calling? That's pretty much bias in of itself.
Andir3.0 @ Aug 1st 2008 4:12PM
Who ever said death was a concern here. Kids go missing every day. Not every one of them die. Some run away. Some return.
Either way, where is the line then, oh wise "prioritizer" of things? Where is the point where racism and bias don't matter? Are you one of those who thinks it's okay for some people to say words or do things that others are not?
Erasure25 @ Aug 5th 2008 6:18PM
Mathematically speaking, you cannot have equality unless the minority population is given some kind of advantage not afforded to the majority. If white people are targeted more for using the phrase "nappy hos" more so than black people, that is considered an "equalizing" advantage.
Assume we have 100 people:
75 white people (and 25% are racist against blacks)
25 black people (and 25% are racist against whites)
This means, a single black person will encounter 19 people who hate him. A white people will encounter 6 people who hate him. But I'm sure you will devise some reason or another to cry foul...
rrskda @ Aug 1st 2008 6:00AM
The globe part already seems to be done--you can choose it as one of your visualizations while listening to mp3s. It looks pretty damn cool.
Erasure25 @ Aug 1st 2008 1:24PM
Agreed, I love displaying the globe when streaming MP3s...
Joshua @ Aug 1st 2008 6:21AM
Will life also available in Europe?
sinjinn @ Aug 1st 2008 6:46AM
yes, it has been available for billions of years.

I'm a big ps3 fan as well as 360 and Wii fan but it just seems to me that sony is F'n up too much lately. Sony delays everything for no appearant reason for better quality. I honestly don't see that quality in anything that they have brought out lately for the ps3. The famed 2.40 is nothing but a dud. That update bricked some ps3's but also the trophy system that im sure was to rival the achievement system of the 360 is totally pointless. None of the games that I currently own, aside from stardust, have been patched to work with the trophy system, so to me, this is a pointless feature.
Sony tends to say "we want to deliver a product worthy of our superior quality, hence the delay" but in the end all the deliver is horse poo. I'm tired of sony's bs. I know what some of you may say, just sell the damn thing and shut up. I totally agree with that but i've bought 11 games for the ps3 and i still have hope that home will be something amazing to get my confidence back. ah, the power of hope.
ok, i vented.
Kyle @ Aug 1st 2008 8:56AM
This feature was cool when the Wii did it over a year ago...
spyd4r @ Aug 1st 2008 8:57AM
Geee a playstation software delay.... what a surprise!
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Aug 1st 2008 10:26AM
I really don't get Sony. Why do they do this to their loyal big $$ paying customers/fans? I've been hearing abut Home since 2003, this Life with Playstation. Well I'm making a video for that. Just to show Kaz what Life with PlayStation is really like. I have been recording short videos of all the latest updates and my thoughts on them, especially when they are always delayed. Isn't this FALSE ADVERTISING? Hey we have a product coming but we aren't going to release it on the date we've mandated. Maybe someone out there will start a class action suit to get some of these idiots off their collective asses. I am sick of always getting let down, 2.4 was rushed because the community wanted it so bad. To hell with that, no in game music for any game(even though it was promised to work with all games) we were supposed to actually have Home on LAUNCH DAY but alas, pushed back three years. Now the Beta opens up for 10 000 Japanese but in Japan they have not embraced the PS3 like us here in North America( Yes Canada is included in that). Maybe we are to gullible and we let sony get away with it or maybe it's because that if most of us were in Japan we would be picketing the Sony HQ. I know if I had a chance to go and do that I would. Maybe that's what they need, BAD PUBLICITY ( oh wait it doesn't matter to them)! Maybe when they start to notice that their user base is shrinking they might think again? Who knows, not me for sure. But the one thing I know is that THEY ARE F'ING PISSING ME OFF.
I mean really if you are going to announce something, please make sure said product is within a week from being released and not still being worked on. Also for those last minute Ideas that you might want to throw in that might delay it's Launch. DO IT AS AN UPDATE TO THE FEATURE. Your gamers are getting tired of Waiting. I know I am. That's why you hardly see me on my PS3( well my friends list will confirm it) anymore.
There's nothing for me to do on it.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Aug 1st 2008 10:30AM
p.s. I'm seriously considering buying a Xbox, even though I have never played xbox 1, 360 or anything remotely close. The wii well the name speaks for itself. It's piss in a box. they are already working on the next model so all of you fanatic wiiers out there got OWNED BY NITENDONT! You struggled within the hype to get it, only to have it already obsolete within two years. Well at least ninty is Honest about it.......
Paulmichael @ Aug 1st 2008 11:39AM
Where did they promise that EVERY single game would support in-game music? It's a more complicated behind-the-scenes issue than we think it is, since I don't think there's a standard for playing soundtracks from within PS3 games, unlike what Microsoft forces on their platform. I own both platforms and still prefer the PS3, though that isn't to say the 360 doesn't have anything going for it. In fact, I kind of schedule which console I'll use on a given day, because of all the updates coming out for both of them.
Erasure25 @ Aug 1st 2008 1:26PM
Are you not capable of waiting a few more weeks to get a free program? Is your life so incomplete without Life with Playstation?
I hate to go on a date with you and be 5 minutes late...
Harry Wagstaff @ Aug 1st 2008 10:31AM
No, that's the prequel of the prequel of Second Life.
