Netshare iPhone tethering app reappears in the App Store. Update: oh, it's down again.
Well, who knows what's going on here, but Nullriver's Netshare iPhone tethering app has made a reappearance for download by direct link only in the App Store, after getting unceremoniously yanked last night. It won't show up in searches, but you can still get it if you know the link -- that's a bit odd. Nullriver told Macrumors that it doesn't believe the SOCKS proxy violates any of the App Store SDK restrictions, and that while AT&T has tethering restrictions for its 3G network, other carriers around the world don't, making the app legit in its opinion. Looks like Apple's agreed -- for now. We did a quick hands-on video last night, check it out after the break.
Update: Yeah, it's offline again. This has really got to be drumming up sales, though. Well done, Nullriver. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

It's still AT&T - their 3g isn't exactly "nationwide"
are you in one of these areas?
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/popUp_3g.jsp
I have 3g service and I am not in one of those areas.
This will earn itself back in exactly one layover in Logan airport, or any airport where wireless is not available for free. Thanks Engadget!
@erik
those of us with brains (aka not members of the apple herd of sheep) dont have much trouble using all the features of superior smartphones.
and why do you end 90% of your comments with a "lol"?
k thnx bai lol
i give it an hour before Nilay axes all of 'em
I've been tethering for 3G while on the road for over a year on my Blackjack on the AT&T network - no need to buy a separate data card since I am already paying for "unlimited" data.
am i the only one worried about how hot the phone gets when you are charging, using 3g, and broadcasting wifi at the same time?
it's almost too hot to touch...or do i have a faulty phone?
Has this been confirmed to work on Internet Explorer? I only ask since it apparently doesn't for Firefox.
Why doesn't it work with Firefox (and potentially other applications)? I can't think of any reason other than you haven't set Firefox to auto-detect proxy settings. "No proxy" is set by default.
I'm not sure. I dont use firefox. There are comments and posts on various areas about firefox not working, but I havn't seen any positive or negative feedback regarding IE. definatly NOT going to install safari.
The question was directed more at Nilay (since he mentioned it in the video), but my theory is that Safari on OS X by default pulls proxy/connection settings made by the system. And that's why it works. You may have to set other applications to either auto-detect, or manually enter the settings yourself in each apps' connection settings. That's really all I can think of. It would be bizarre for it to be another reason.
If anything, it should work like the tethering that has been working on jailbroken phones. Firefox somehow needs to know that it has to use the Socks server's DNS settings.
For one, like many said, Firefox needs to have the socks proxy info in Settings, then goto about:config and set network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true and make sure network.proxy.socks and network.proxy.socks.port are filled in correctly to your proxy address and ports listed on the NetShare app. That should then work correctly.
FYI this app is $9.99. You can get similar for free on jailbroken phones. No way am I gonna pay for something Apple should have included to begin with. Then again, they haven't even figured out how to do cut and paste yet.
What legitimate reason does AT&T have for disapproving of tethering? It's a dickhead policy and the obvious profit-mongering is OBVIOUS. What, are you going to somehow consume more traffic web browsing through tethering than through the phone? It's the same interwebnets, assholes. Be it browsed on the iPhone or on a laptop. The whole point was to not browse a watered-down internet. p2p is already frowned upon on their network with their banhammer at the ready; that covers the most alleged traffic intensive activity. Someone please take these bastards to court.
I really hope you're not being serious, because there is a significant increase in network strain through laptop/computer data than phone/mobile data. Do you think anyone is using their iPhone to download a 30MB file off of rapidshare? No, they aren't.
Get a clue, Dude.
Wow! your such an idiot. Using a laptop consumes so much more bandwidth, such as downloading files and streaming video. You are an ignorant fool.
Oh hai, corporate lap-dogs. Remember AT&T's own iPhone commercials saying that, "This isn't a watered down version of the internet..." How about holding them to that, you know, their own actual claims? That is inclusive of streaming video, VoIP, etc. What the fuck do you think you're doing when you watch a YouTube vid on your iPhone, NOT streaming video?
No, that was an Apple commercial, and they were obviously lying because the 3G iPhone doesn't support Flash or Java, ass. Also, assuming you have an iPhone, read your contract! You can't tether on it. Oh that's right, I'm sure your defense is "I never read that stuff."
The YouTube app on the iPhone isn't the REAL INTERNET, because native YouTube videos are in FLASH you idiot. Go read before you make ridiculous claims...
If you think it's so illegal how about you take them to court about it? I don't have an iPhone because I actually KNOW what the ToS ensues. So how about you get off your lazy fat ass and do something about it instead of whining on some online forum?
Oh that's right, because in the real world a contract is a legally binding document, and you realize that, but would rather bitch about how you feel it's illegal because "the man" is sticking it to you. Get a clue.
"yes other smart phones have had it, but can they use it?"
Let's see. I use my Samsung M610 for tethering on Sprint. Here's what I do. I tell Windows to create a new dial-up link and select the phone from my list of paired Bluetooth devices. That's it. When I want to tether, I tell my laptop to connect to that dial-up connection and I'm online. That's one right-click and one selection from the resulting pop-up menu. Could it be any simpler?
FYI - This APP works as advertised...
I called and spoke with AT&T and the rep assured me that "unlimite"data really meant "unlimited" data. Also, I spoke with her about "tethering" - as I did not want to hide and reason as to why I was inquiring - and she stated that the 3G plans allow for tethering.
BOTTOM LINE = AT&T rep assured me this was OK and I would not incur any monumental charges. (I did have them notate my convo just in case.)
Peace ---
that rep will be fired as of today.
I hope that's the general thought at AT&T... I bought this app, and I don't intend to use it for more than light browsing every once in a while, but this is stated in boldface in AT&Ts data plan TOS:
"Furthermore, plans(unless specifically designated for tethering usage) cannot be used for any applications that tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other phone/PDA-to computer accessories, Bluetooth® or any other wireless technology) to Personal Computers (including without limitation, laptops), or other equipment for any purpose."
Thanks for quoting the TOS Joe. I see nothing wrong with light tethering (i.e. waiting for your flight at the airport and you want to check email on your laptop) but there is the ominous feeling that the vast majority will abuse it.
@supersexyerik
If you can't learn how to use a WinMo phone or Blackberry after about 10 minutes of reading (being the absolute max) and you are under the age of 60, there is probably something significantly wrong with you. Then again maybe that's why you would pay the ridiculous service charges to use a 3G iPhone...
That app seems pretty useful. And lol @ that guy saying his battery is going to die after 5 minutes of use. I love my iPhone 3G but the battery sucks!
Very nice. Make sure you plug in your cable to your laptops USB to minimize battery drain.
Anyone figure out the "how to" for PC...and I swear to God if you say get a Mac I'm going to kick you in the balls
Get a Mac!
Of course there had to be at least one. How could I doubt. Thank you monkey thank you.
It got it to work under Vista you have to create a network in Vista by
1. clicking the network icon in the taskbar and choose connect or disconnect.
2. click "setup a connection or network" and choose "setup a wireless ad-hoc network" name the network and add security if you want click the save network box and hit next then click close after network is created. Vista should automatically connected to this new network.
3.Open "Network and Sharing Center" and choose manage wireless networks and then click adapter properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol Version 4 and choose properties then choose "use the following IP address" and enter in 192.168.10.2 and make sure your subnet is 255.255.255.0, that's it leave everything else empty. Save your changes.
5. Open the Control Panel and choose internet options, chose the connections tab and select LAN. Then hit the advanced button under proxies. In the SOCKS field type in 192.168.10.1 (which will be the IP of your iPhone)and for port # choose 1080 and save your changes.
Your PC is now setup next setup the iPhone.
6. open setting and choose Wi-fi on the iPhone and it should see your newly created network enter password if you set one. Choose it and hit the blue arrow icon.
7. Choose static and in the IP address field enter 192.168.10.1 and make sure the subnet is 255.255.255.0. You may also want to disable auto-lock on the iPhone cause that will close out the program after a set amount of time.
8. Hit the Home button and open netshare.
9. Then for the bad part, open SAFARI (even on Vista it only works on SAFARI) and you can surf the net.
I bought the app on my iPhone.. set everything up, and it doesn't work. I don't know why. The iPhone seems to connect but I am getting nothing on the mac. I did it a couple of times just in case I did something wrong and it still doesn't work. Help? Anyone?
Get a PC
No thanks. I'll stick with Apple. They have by far proved to be way ahead of any PC out there.

Ahaha, alright... but, can anyone help? Or is this site just Windblows folks looking for Mac lovers?
No Pablo is correct...with the exception of using Pro Tools or Final Cut Pro (assuming you don't use AVID), there is really no reason to own a Mac other than trying to be trendy.
Programming/coding - Linux
Simplicity/Business - PC
Audio/Video Editing (5%) and Being Trendy (95%) - Mac
I see your point.. but I do a lot of Video Editing and work with HD and prefer using the Mac system a lot more than Windows. Final Cut Studio, in my opinion, is the best editing program I have ever used. Love it.
not to mention pc gaming and compadibility.
It works when using itunes also.
Anyone have a tutorial for users with Vista?
wow erik should really not be allowed in this site.
For the price AT&T charges, tethering should be allowed.
I don't understand? What does this app do? Why do I want it?
Windows Xp Directions
Ok guys...I created a video for this and I'll post the link when I get a chance.
First off,you need to download Proxifier from proxifier.com
Here ya go:
1) Setup a new network on windows(call it netshare)
a. To do this you need to go into your network connections and right click on your wireless connection. Then click the wireless networks tab. Click add. Name your network whatever. I call mine "netshare." Set net authentication to open and data encryption to disabled. click the box on the bottom that says "this is a computer to computer ad-hoc network"
2) Connect to the ad-hoc network by disconnecting all other connections.
3) Go to the wifi networks on your iphone and select netshare. Set the IP address to 192.168.10.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.0
4) Go to the TCP/IP settings and set your computer's IP.
a. To do this you need to right click on your wireless connection and click properties.
b. left click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP and select properties.
c. select the use the following ip address box
d. set your ip to 192.168.10.2
e. set your subnet to 255.255.255.0
f. select ok
5) Run the proxifier program
6) click the proxy settings button on the tool bar
7) Click Add then enter 192.168.10.1 in the address and set the port to 1080. select Socks ver 5 and click ok
8) Open netshare on your iphone
9) test your connection using the proxy checker
10) Netshare should show your connections at 1 and the data rates
11) Open your browser and you should have internet access through your phone.
ENJOY!

Thanks Ultimatefighter
That was awesome unfortunately I'm one of those suckers that has Vista on my machine so the connection fails when I run the proxychecker thing.
F*&$!
Sorry guys, looks like this would violate the terms & agreements for AT&T:
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/legal/plan-terms.jsp
If you want Adium to work, you have to set each account to use the system wide SOCKS 5 proxy.
Works 100% here in Finland.
Just downloaded a file 95 Kb/s (880 kbps), which makes Sonera's 3G 1 megabit.
Getting it to work was a bit of a hazzle, 99% user error, of course.
This is just great! Now I only need to find add-ons for FF3 and Thunderbird to easily change SOCKS server.
Video walkthrough is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyXzL4hmF7c
Still processing as of 4:13pm pst
Yes! It did not work for me unless I make the 3G connection active before launching NetShare (for example by surfing with Safari on the iPhone after setting up the AdHoc but before launching NetShare). I made a full write up here: http://myutil.com/2008/8/1/finally-got-netshare-to-work-on-my-iphone-3g
