Apple only rules by momentum. Period. 7 years ago yes. They had the best of everything on the market. That was then. Their GUI is NO better then everyone else's. In point of fact it sucks ass. Their hardware is in no way superior. That leaves hype and iTunes. iTunes is about all they have.

I don't know what you are looking for in a GUI on a portable media player. Artist, Title, Song... you can't make it much different.
I'm an 8gb iPod Nano user... and I find the iPod's click-wheel fantastic. One wheel and one button. It's 0.26in thick. I've had mine for 2 years.
This Zen Mozaic has 9 buttons and is 0.5in thick. Progress?
For those looking for a device strictly for reading, the new Kobo is a nice little option. It's small enough to slip into a pocket, can do more with a PDF than the competition, and at $129, it's $10 cheaper than both the Nook and Kindle WiFi.

Why is it that Apple is the only manufacturer who has a 160GB drive? Well beyond Archos's huge ass PMP.
Maybe Apple rules? I dunno...
