BlackBerry Bold now available -- in Chile
Movistar's Chilean outpost has now become -- somewhat surprisingly, may we add -- the very first carrier in the world to launch the BlackBerry Bold and put it into subscribers' hands. The carrier's making sure everyone knows what a coup they've managed to pull off, too, proudly proclaiming "FIRST ONES IN THE WORLD" with a red banner draped across the Bold's image on Movistar's site. Pricing seems a little high at 299,990 Chilean pesos (about $588) on a two-year contract, but hey, you've gotta pay to play; just how badly do you want to be one of the first people on the face of the planet (John Mayer notably excepted) to put this thing to use?

cboy007 @ Aug 4th 2008 10:20PM

Sachin @ Aug 4th 2008 10:37PM
They're selling it in Chile? It must be a "hot" phone! Get it? Get it? Like, chili pepper hot? Like, li - no one's laughing, are they.
Sergio @ Aug 4th 2008 11:24PM
HTC DIamond type is great! Best I used so far.
And yes after some tweaking the Diamonds dedicated video mem makes magic!
grull27 @ Aug 4th 2008 8:13PM
So when does it come to America? :-/
krepitor @ Aug 4th 2008 8:21PM
You mean NORTH America, because It has arrived already in the South...IN CHILE HA! HA! Awesome, those lucky chileans must be laughing pretty hard at us.
derX @ Aug 4th 2008 8:54PM
Wow, don't you love it when people try to correct others and are wrong?
He means the United States. If he wanted to say North America, the continent, which is always called North America when being referred to he would've said that. Instead he said America, which is more often used to reference the United States of America than the aforementioned official name.
Wouldn't it be tragically ironic if grull27 were referring to the continent America? Hah.
hugoliva @ Aug 4th 2008 9:43PM
@derX
I assume you are one of those that think Colombus dicovered the US and not the whole continent then.
Tony @ Aug 4th 2008 9:49PM
While we are nitpicking here...
"Wouldn't it be tragically ironic if grull27 were referring to the continent America?"
derX, "America" is not a continent. Only "North America" and "South America" are.
They have similar names, but it is literally, a world of difference.
kavendano14 @ Aug 4th 2008 10:26PM
America is a colloquial name for the U.S., the continent is called America because every continent has a female name in Latin (Europa, Asia, Africa, etc). It's understood that America is the U.S. because of the influence of the U.S., but the North and South America thing is only taught in the U.S. (That I know of).
Ruben @ Aug 4th 2008 10:43PM
Damn Mainfest Destiny.
If the USA cant take it by force, they will take it by name.
derX @ Aug 4th 2008 10:55PM
@hugoliva
Umm, I don't really see where you're going with that, but okay. As kavendano14 said, colloquially, when someone says America and not the Americas or something like that, it is generally understood that said person is referring to the USA. If another country of which I was aware had America in the name, I'd certainly disambiguate if the context called for it. When he said America, it was pretty clear to what he was referring. Though I might have accidentally omitted a word--will get to that next--I don't believe anything I said points to my being ignorant, so I don't see from where your Columbus comment came.
@Tony
Hah, I knew I was going to make a mistake there. LOL I meant to put a North in front of that America in question. Yeah, I make typos and omit words/chucks of sentences all the time. Perhaps I should more careful when posting. Perhaps. LOL Thanks for pointing that out, btw. Gave me a good laugh. LOL
@kavendano14
Thanks.
@Ruben
Good for you. You made a funny. I know I LOL'd.
dcny @ Aug 4th 2008 11:14PM
@kavendano14
"America is a colloquial name for the U.S"
You mean the USA
by your saying of America equals USA than US could mean Mexico or the USA since Mexico is the United States of Mexico while the USA is the United States of America
" the continent is called America because every continent has a female"
wrong its called America because it was named after Amerigo Vespucci
In other parts of the world North & South America are just known as America because some places consider North & South America one continent just like some call Europe & Asia Eurasia because there one continent.
You need to get up on your Geography & Geology
derX @ Aug 4th 2008 11:32PM
Ahem. Brought to you via our friendly, neighborhood Wikipedia.
"For Waldseemüller, no one should object to the naming of the land after its discoverer. He used the Latinized version of Vespucci's name (Americus Vespucius), but in its feminine form "America", following the examples of 'Europa' and 'Asia.'"

If you're going to try to be pedantic AND condescending, don't suck at it.

If we're going to share knowledge and opinions, can we not do it in a non-hostile manner?
No hard feelings and no offense taken from anyone. Let's just try to be respectful of each other.
Franco @ Aug 29th 2008 9:31PM
And Chile isn't part of America?
As Johnny Cash said "America is the continent, not this country" (when talkin' about United States)
localteklinkdotcom @ Aug 4th 2008 8:24PM
didn't Christ do the first review?
Richard @ Aug 4th 2008 8:33PM

UPDATE:
John Mayer was reached for comment. He did so in Spanish,
«¡Jajaja! ¡John Mayer fue el primer del mundo, bitches! Con mis cojones grandes conseguí el Bold hace meses...desde Mayo. Asi es que como dicen en inglés, 'You ain't got shit on me!'»
Franko @ Aug 4th 2008 9:16PM

VIVA CHILE MIERDA!!!
phanbouy @ Aug 4th 2008 9:30PM
long live Chilean shit?
cristian @ Aug 4th 2008 10:26PM
English is too simple to give an accurate translation to that...
is more like "Long live Chile", "Mierda" is simply an expression, doesn't actually means shit, it means nothing.
Theo Detweiller @ Aug 4th 2008 10:32PM
Actually, the closest translation to American English should be "Long live Chile, F*** yeah!".
phanbouy @ Aug 4th 2008 11:27PM
@Theo
wow... i didn't realize Team America had such international appeal!
Jonathan-DBOSS @ Aug 5th 2008 12:00AM
¡Eso es carajo! ¡¡Viva latino-américa!!
Anyways, I'm living in the US so... when's this thing coming to Florida?
Theo Detweiller @ Aug 5th 2008 12:04AM
@phanbouy:
Actually, the phrase predates Team America for about 100 years (at least), and is not seen as a cuss-word in that context (at least in Chile).
Arthur @ Aug 4th 2008 8:55PM
I guess having a Bold would make smuggling more efficient.
derX @ Aug 4th 2008 9:02PM
If you were to use the Bold's GPS, you'd see that comment was no where near funny, but smack dab in the middle of offensive.
Lazarpandar @ Aug 4th 2008 9:04PM
I lol'd.
Arthur @ Aug 4th 2008 9:18PM
Forgot about the GPS! No more misplacing the field!
Just a joke relax! I am Canadian and I cant get a Bold!
How would you feel if you could only buy Corona in Canada!
gad get @ Aug 5th 2008 12:49AM
I'm Canadian too, but being Canadian doesn't automagically make up for being a douche. That takes a change of attitude.
pekosROB @ Aug 5th 2008 9:10AM
Corona in Canada? Do you mean Corona in Mexico? I'm confused...

I'm not exactly sure how to "get up" on Geography & Geology or how the study of rocks and the composition of earth's land mass has any bearing on semantics within the English language.
