Canon EOS 7D rumors heat up again
Seriously, we've been hearing about the EOS 7D for well over a year now, with the chatter predictably heating up before every major trade show -- and with just over a month before Photokina, it's happening all over again. Hopefully Canon actually has this semi-legendary $1,899 full-frame DSLR to show us this time -- the 5D is getting pretty ancient.
P.S.- We have no way of knowing if this image is real or not, so don't get too excited out there.

I'm excited already!
Victor @ Aug 5th 2008 11:34AM
Looks like a photo-chop
robert @ Aug 5th 2008 11:35AM
Damn, they must be really good with Photoshop.
I can't tell
Muhammed @ Aug 5th 2008 11:39AM
I got really excited, for a second there, if it were true.
Gus @ Aug 6th 2008 6:24AM
I´m 100 percent sure it´s a fake, Canon stopped painting their hotshoes black a couple of years ago.
robert @ Aug 5th 2008 12:17PM
I was trying to be sarcastic toward Victor, but it didn't come out too well.
Epic Fail for me. Shame there isn't a delete....
Victor @ Aug 5th 2008 12:26PM
That's okay. I got it. The 7 just looks really badly butchered
Victor @ Aug 5th 2008 12:33PM
BTW, I'm not questioning the existence of a 5D replacement (that thing is due for a total replacement), but this doesn't seem like it.
gunboatdiplomacy @ Aug 5th 2008 2:25PM
this image is fake fake fake. perhaps *something* is coming...and in short order. the 1ds mk iii and the 40d were all out before fotokina. in august, actually. so there you go.
also, minolta already did a 7D, so look for any future camera to get the "mk" treatment.
Tom @ Aug 6th 2008 2:11AM
Absolutely you should overlook the D700. It's not full frame, the big draw of the D3. All of the features, none of the sensor.
Eric @ Aug 7th 2008 4:27PM
@Tom,
You are flat out wrong about the D700. It has the exact same sensor as the D3, it has the same electronics, the same AF and many other features that are the same as the D3. It doesn't have dual CF Card slots, it doesn't have a 300,000 actuation rating of the shutter (it's 150,000 - 50,000 more than the F2, F3, F4 and F5 got) and it's way less expensive. It doesn't have a 100 percent viewfinder (94 percent I think) but it is full frame. Period.
Nikon considers it a pro camera, not a prosumer camera like the D300.
Rage @ Aug 5th 2008 11:34AM
Awesome, at least no one will complain about iphone coverage on this thread.
HOOPER @ Aug 5th 2008 7:03PM
But...eh, nevermind
wes @ Aug 5th 2008 11:38AM
the '7' on the box looks weird. it's definitely photoshopped.
Mam00th @ Aug 5th 2008 12:02PM
Have you ever seen something with 7 dimension that didn't look strange?
Kimleng @ Aug 5th 2008 12:34PM
I agree. Not only does the 7 look strange, but it's fuzzier than the rest of the text. Whoever photochopped it didn't select the "crisp" font setting to match the rest of the text sharpness and left it as the "making it so obvious that this is fake" setting.
Tinu @ Aug 5th 2008 11:42AM
Well, 5D has been out for a while so isn't it obvious a successor will come out? It happens with most of the popular products =).
finbred @ Aug 5th 2008 11:59AM
Haha – whoever photoshopped that sure doesn't have much of a font collection...
Justin Dennis @ Aug 5th 2008 12:01PM
Fake! HOT SHOE IS PAINTED BLACK! All the new canons have a bare metal hot shoe...
Neil @ Aug 5th 2008 12:08PM
That box is far too plain looking. Compare it to the black and red packaging of the current 5D/24-105 Kit. Also apart from the dodgy looking 7, notice that the image of the lens on the top of the box is out of focus. Finally, I have never seen a black Canon logo on any of their camera or lens packaging before sometimes white on red though.
Silverfrog @ Aug 5th 2008 12:19PM
Reminder: The D700 had similarly crappy photos prior to its release as well. But guess what...it's now a real product. I wouldn't call this product fake just yet.
fstop11.net @ Aug 5th 2008 12:21PM
How about the fact it has no AF-ON button like all new EOS DSLRs.
fake.
Silverfrog @ Aug 5th 2008 3:32PM
The photo might be fake, but the product could be real. Wait and see. I stick by what I said.
Jim @ Aug 5th 2008 12:21PM
My iPhone coverage is really poor today!
fstop11.net @ Aug 5th 2008 12:21PM
How about the fact it has no AF-ON button.
fake!
aromato @ Aug 5th 2008 12:30PM
Ummm... this photo is a joke and was posted the last time Engadget brought up the mythical 7D. In October last year....

Don @ Aug 5th 2008 10:51PM
iHope Engadget has some money in the coffers. Infringing on someone else's copyright..... hm
NHAnimator @ Aug 5th 2008 12:49PM
The READ LINK takes you to a French page with a small image of the camera. Click on that image, and well, there you go: 5D.
Eugene @ Aug 5th 2008 8:27PM
Well, I can tell it's 5D by the picture above. First, I don't remember Canon ever used exactly the same body design for any of previous successor cameras they made. Second, the hot shoe design we see in this picture is already obsolete. If it was a new camera, the hot shoe wouldn't be painted and there's a big chance it would incorporate a place for weather seal of the new flash mount. And third, the fact that digit 7 on the box is poorly put is obvious.
Liam @ Aug 5th 2008 1:41PM
I can't believe this was actually posted. Bad Engadget. For the record, I expect a replacement for the 5D soon; advancements in the x0D range have really blunted its appeal.
stan @ Aug 5th 2008 1:51PM
that photo is NO WHERE CLOSE to being real. its so fake its not even funny and its not even a respectable photoshop job. why?
1: the 7 is the wrong font. it doesn't match at all the font that canon uses for their numbers
2. the box is simply a 5D box with a 7 slapped on it.
3. the photo of the camera on the box is a 5D and its not even close to being anything else. for example, the hot shoe is painted black. since the 5D came out 3 years ago, Canon is no longer painting their hotshoes black anymore, they've gone to unpainted silver (because the paint always flakes off) so there's no chance the 7D will have a black hotshoe. secondly, the command dial will have more settings on it than the 5D does such as at least 3 custom modes and possibly more whereas the photo on the box is an exact copy of the 5D.
seriously engadget.... this is a bad bad fake. you really should at least acknowledge that and not get the rubes all in a tizzy. the 7D is coming soon enough, but this ain't it.
Mark @ Aug 5th 2008 7:17PM
Agreed - I knew it was a fake the moment I saw the left side dial - it's the 5D. The 5D Mk II will at the very least have the same three C modes the 40D is sporting - the 5D had one, just like the box shot above.
Slliim @ Aug 5th 2008 2:10PM
How convenient that the image ends right on the side of the lens where one would have to Photo-Chop the actual 5D symbol on the camera.
No need to point out the other indications that were already discussed before my post. Good job Stan...

daevh @ Aug 5th 2008 4:00PM
The flash hot-shoe is also black, Canon have stopped coating them black for a while now as they tended to scratch and look quite tatty quickly.
Markarian @ Aug 5th 2008 6:56PM
Well, people who are looking at a Canon full-frame most likely have a significant investment in Canon glass (like myself) and those looking at the Nikon D3 will have the same issue. It seems that, unless you're really rich, once you've chosen a system, you're stuck with it. Now, I'm a Canon man, but when the D700 came out I still drooled.
Michael Scrip @ Aug 5th 2008 7:43PM
Hey ya'll... don't freak out and blame Engadget for posting this... it clearly says rumor in the title.
I actually enjoy rumors and bad Photoshop jobs like this. Don't shoot the messenger!
Marlon Perez @ Aug 5th 2008 7:56PM
Canon is now using non-coated hot shoe mounts seen on the canon XS, XSi, 40D, 1Ds MKIII and 1D MKIII. Chances are that they are going to be using one on the 5D replacement. Also in addition, the hot shoe mount will also be raised for weather proofing provided by the canon 580EX II flash shoe.
roncore @ Aug 5th 2008 8:44PM
I hope this thing comes out soon! this would be just what i need to spark a price drop so i can afford the 5D!!!
Markarian @ Aug 5th 2008 9:49PM
Also, it seems a bit unlikely that the box art would be featured so prominently for a camera that hasn't actually even been announced yet. Spy shots, yes. Retail box for a product whose existence has yet to be confirmed, highly unlikely.
jwestin @ Aug 6th 2008 2:51AM
I'd deem this image fake allso due to the fact that I doubt Canon dearing to release a semi pro class product, lacking an constant ISO reading on the top LCD. A simple and very useful feature that already is introduced on the 40D.
As others have quoted here, the hotshoe will probably have the metallic finish of the newer models.
The AF-ON button is allso lacking.
(Features that is highly likely to appear on the successor to 5D)
hihi @ Aug 6th 2008 5:09AM
shotophopped!!!!
MIKE @ Aug 7th 2008 4:03PM
SHITTY PHOTOSHOP JOB. THE FONT DOSE NOT MATCH.........
wael @ Aug 9th 2008 1:26AM
lool this picture is fucke there is no 7d on canon but canon has 5d mark 2 and we w'ill see it before photokina i think this month but i think that canon have excellent cemra like 1d mark3 good price also 3500€ and the 40D and 30D not bad at all
Philscbx @ Aug 14th 2008 7:58AM
It's more true than not.
I was just at National Camera Mpls Mn and the agent there said the D7 is about to come. He quoted me price that will make me first in line through every red light when he calls.
I'm sick of all these L glass sitting around without a second body.
Sixten @ Sep 2nd 2008 2:31PM
Whats most fantastic in all this bull... is that none of you guys, (girls) noticed that Canon will never send the 24-105 lens together with a camera that brings more than 14 mpx.
It is fake.....
/S
jr @ Sep 8th 2008 10:13PM
The font is off, the camera is off (it is the 5D)
people are really desperate.....
this is the new canonshoped
lol
Andrew @ Sep 10th 2008 3:33PM
it`s fake....the camera perspective is wrong...
