Yeeah, it's really expensive, but it's a totally different market. This is a (semi) professional photography tool,an easy way to store a backup of your pictures if you're on the read, and the best there is. If you compare it to the Nikon coolwalker or the canon thingy it's not that expensive.
Also it's probably at least in part designed to be used in the field, like maybe when you are on the back of a truck shooting wildlife in Africa or something or when you're wearing gloves. So it has nice big buttons, etc. It's not meant to be a sleek pmp for on the plane or train.
As to the Ipod solution. I don't think it can show raw pictures (or nef or dng or whatever raw format you use) which is what you shoot when you spend that much money on photography equipment. Maybe there are plugins, but this thing (just guessing) probably does a lot of the processing/rendering in hardware instead of software. Making it probably faster in rendering a 5-10 meg raw file.
