Steve made a big show of announcing that the iPhone 3G would launch in 70 countries by the end of the year at WWDC, and according to CFO Tim Cook during Apple's last financial call, 20 more countries will join the list on August 22 for a total of 45. With that date just a couple weeks away, things are starting to fall into place, although not all 20 are confirmed yet. Here's a quick breakdown of the 16 confirmed countries so far -- any bets on what the other four will be?
- Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru and Uruguay on Telefonica
- India on Bharti Airtel and Vodafone
- The Czech Republic on O2
- Estonia on EMT
- Poland on Orange and Era
- Romania on Orange
- Philippines on Globe Telecom
- Hungary on T-Mobile
- Singapore on Singtel
As long as the updates dont brick the phones everyones good to go.
World domination is only a few countries away. Apple will soon seize the civilized world population by the gonads. It's only a matter of time for their hearts and minds to follow and take a copious sip from the Kool-Aid.
The term iPhone will become deeply ingrained into multitudes of cultures. No longer will the phrase "American as apple pie" be used, because it will be rephrased as "American as Apple iPhone." Only one more year before the iPhone captures the number one spot in smartphone market share.
As the Highlander was always saying, "There shall be only one." Little did he know he was referring to the (iPh)one.
Wouldn't it be weird if Apple had programmed some software in the iPhone that on a certain date takes over the phone and like the software makes the iPhone sprout legs and then all 8 or so million take over the world?
That would be weird.
Engadget covers the Iphone like ESPN covers Brett Favre....all day ...everyday! ...Yawn
and the phones don't keep cracking... I was eagerly waiting to buy one here in India. but now... I think I'll wait.
what about bumcrackistan?
China? its a huge market to ignore...
It wouldn't be possible, too bigger country (population wise) to launch in with all the other mentioned countries (esp India)
phone would have to be cmda to tap into it though, since I think most of the networks aren't gsm.
Likely Egypt and Saudi Arabia
cuz they're the biggest markets in the Middle East.
Jobs indicated in an interview at WWDC that China would happen by the end of the year.
I think this is it: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/10/found-footage-steve-jobs-interview-on-cnbc/
Also, China has tons of iPhone and WinMo knock offs already floating around.
True, billions of dollars could be had, but Apple would have to extremely ramp up production.
Apple's too smart to ignore China.
I imagine it's hard to set things up to serve a billion person + market.
hey hey Dominican Republic With Claro and orange ??
China will be one of them.
hopefully, since the deal was finalizing since the US launch.
How about you work on your supply issues first.
I'll sell you mine if you can spend 24 hours in Rosie O'Donnell's bed.
Dude, I just ate lunch and threw up a little in my mouth. Thanks for that.
Foxconn makes now 800.000 iPhones per week, which should help out at some point
Congrats! (:
TeliaSonera is probably going for one launch in all Baltic countries, and not just the smallest, just like they did when iPhone launched in Scandinavia.
That means 18 countries.
2 countries back.. Iceland and Greenland!!!
The sheep are going global.
Thanks for adding to the post count and making Apple articles more popular.
I'd rather be a "sheep" than shit a watermelon every day with WinMo or Vista...
You really haven't lived if you don't shit watermelons everyday.
Goatse FTW
I just loled your name low ranked i didnt even read your comment.
anyone know where I can find a map like the one Steve Jobs used? It would be handy for presentations. He must have used something outside of Keynotes
Bet you can find a better map, two big countries are missing from it.
Claro's been promising the iPhone 3G to the brazilian market since before the official launch... so maybe Brazil ?
Yeah Brazil makes a lot of sense since it's also a big market, also Egypt and South Africa, and maybe Dominican republic since it's being offer throw Claro & Orange which are deploying it already on latin america on the 22nd
I bet it will be Iceland
countries with cold weather are not the best market for the iphone, it definitely doesn't work with gloves on.
actually in argentina 2 of the 3 mobile companies will sell the iphone (Claro and Movistar)
Rep. of Korea could be one of them. I heard that Apple was looking for iPhone marketing exec in Korea recently. They may be running into problem with the Korean govenment's requirement of Wipi(or something) on all smart phones released in Korea...
now if only all of the respective providers had 3G coverage in all that red :)
Please mend the typo from “India on Bhairti Airtel and Vodafone” to “India on Bharti Airtel and Vodafone”
Hopefully South Africa as well... heard rumours from local Vodacom/Vodafone...
Ha--
I've been seeing these vodacom pamphlets already. it says "coming soon". I think it'll be a rip off -- you pay, say, 1.5 times as much as the US and they'll give you a BusinessChat 1000 plan or something like that which you'll never be able to finish R1000 worth of airtime. :P
iphone 3G for Uruguay on Telefonica?
Telefonica is known as Movistar in these latitudes, and America Movil as Claro, thought it was going through America movil... something went wrong at last moment with the big boss from Mexico?
AND YEEEEESSSS, we have to pay for a USD$130 a month contract WITH TELCEL!!!! wohoooooo!!!
Y si mi chavo, hay que seguirle pagando los viajes a Carlitos Slim (un abuso como siempre), ojalá Movistar entre pronto
Globe's offering is outrageous! 3G usage is per minute and not per data size! they don't offer unlimited data plan! awful plans, i tell you! They are selling the 16GB iphone for 48000php!!!! that's roughly around $1090 US!!!!!! WTF!!!!!! effing price!!!!!!
Still cheaper than in Hong Kong - 10k HKD. Now if you upgraded your plan to one of the iPhone plans, the 16gb model should only set you back by PhP 22+k
Slovakia is already confirmed - for Orange & T-mobile > t-mobile will offer also 52 wifi spots for internet connection (because of lack of 3G)
Looks like everybody is getting it exept Puerto Rico.
Totally unfair, Puerto Rico is governed by the FCC, we have 3G from ATT and from Claro.
What's going on
Ken remember that we already have the Iphone 3-K-rajos.
What is more ironic is that you can purchase all other Apple products and every other ATT phone on Puerto Rico.
Right now the only close option is to purchase an iPod touch and separately use your regular ATT Phone.
Apple is racist.
Apple will never market the iPhone in a non-independent country, much less a territory that is not a state of the Union. All my former college classmates from PR had to fly to the continental USA in order to get an iPhone from AT&T - the iPhone works pretty well with the AT&T towers in PR. But I need to hear from those in Guam, Virgin Is, American Samoa and Northern Mariana - they're also US possessions.
forget bout the iphone, lets wait for the thunder, which HOPEFULLY we are getting ;) long live RIM.
iPhone is already available in Puerto Rico, it's not being announce because Puerto Rico is consider a State same as Hawaii, you might have to buy it in the states though since there's no Apple store in PR or AT&T store that carries it. Am pretty sure if you go to a AT&T store while in the US and tell them your a AT&T customer and live in PR you would have no problem buying it
I wish they sell the iPhone in PR damn :S i want one since the first one. maybe i'll buy one from a friend in NY... shame shame.
I think that's the least of your concerns. Haven't you watched Exit to Eden?
Hopefully they will account for volume this time and avoid the activation issues of the US launch.
Israel?
There is only one country to confirm...
The 19 countries confirmed for August 22 are:
Argentina
Chile
Colombia
Czech Rep.
Ecuador
El Salvador
Estonia
Guatemala
Honduras
Hungary
India
Paraguay
Peru
Philppines
Poland
Romania
Singapore
Slovakia
Uruguay
Any word on the pricing?
Heard the pricing wont be the equivalent of USD 200/300 as announced by jobs
yes in the Philippines its PHP48,000 thats $1,060 for 16GB.
I hope that Vodafone Turkey bring it to Turkey too.
Come on Voda Turkey, goddamnit! It's freakin' time! What happened to Turkcell anyway?
Thailand?
Does anyone knows which countries (if any) will sell simlock-free phones - as well as subscription free (with pre paid plan)
Any pricing info available yet?
I'm guessing dominican republic will sell it prepaid but not sim-free, because 80% of active phones in DR are prepaid!
I'm guessing the Dominican Republic will be selling it prepaid but not sim-free, because 80% of active phones in DR are prepaid.
3g iphone everywhere and yet, im in the usa and no 3g for me. Nearest 3g is over 200 miles away in any direction.
Im with you. In Iowa, apparently we don't need fast data.
Republic of South Africa better be one of them! We were one of the first countries announced that would be receiving the iPhone 3G - wouldn't be fair to make us wait any longer than August 22nd '08!
well, some reports suggest that vodacom is taking its time (as usual), but NTL it'll come. I'm here with the first gen already but Vodacom's edge coverage is when lim x-> 0.
I'm also keeping an eye... but they'll probably sell it for a ridiculous price with a businesschat1000 (or something like that) contract.
I think they'll never bring it out in the iStores... they're 3rd party. Maybe they'll only be exclusive to vodacom.
Brazil, if they are doing the rest of South America. Although a huge market there as well.
Everybody forgot to mention the country where the population has the highest IQ . Brazil.
We were too dumb to remember, sorry.
yeah, and it is not in Wyoming yet, I know, it is a small country, but get it here already!!!!!!
Is Singtel/Singapore confirmed? The macworld article references a reuters article, but the reuters article is not sourced from anyone relevant.
Having said that, Singtel did just send out an email blast promising those who had previously indicated interest an update "next week".
It seems you have your sources wrong Engadget.
According to Reuters, the south american countries will be carried by America Movil, which is Comcel, Claro and Porta - and not Telefonica.
Telefonica seems to have signed contract with Apple as well, at least for Ecuador, but Porta seems to be the first one to carry it.
See the below link for more information:
http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN0648325420080806
I believe Telefonica is known as America Movil there, Mr. Know-it-all.
Telefonica is known as Movistar in al latin america and America Movil is known as Comcel in Colombia, Claro in Peru, Brazil, Chile and I think Argentina.
Sorry, missed an "L" there.
There should be an "Edit" button, but I don't really know if technology has gone that far now-days.
Another 20? Why not... I mean it's not like there's severe stock shortages to the countries they're currently supplying is it... Wait a second.
Greece is now.
Vodafone reps have been confirming it for some days now.
End of August they say ...
Nilay in Latin America is Claro, no Telefonica
I believe that Telefonica is also known as Movistar, but not America Movil.
Before coming back on it, do go and read the Reuter profile on America Movil. If you don't care to read it all, then skip to the very last paragraph in order to see who Reuters lines up as Amercia Movil's competitors. Hint: One of them is Telefonica.

Now go sit in the corner for one hour, and change your username while being there... :P
What about Slovenia? :)
So can we after that launch and the annual iPod update get back to the core and get some computer hardware updates? Like monitors. And get some exciting new products like mid range macs, smaller notebooks, etc?
I am getting a little tired the iPod & iPhone in the front seats.
The 8GB model is priced at $976 in the Philippines, I'd go for PS3 instead :P
Holy sh**! Even Argentina is getting it, what about friggin Brazil????
I hope Guam, being a US Territory in the Pacific, will be next, since we're close to the Philippines & Singapore.
Czech Republic - not just O2, but also T-Mobile and Vodafone confirmed they'll start selling iPhone 3G on August 22 today
correction needed: Tim Cook is Apple's COO, Oppenheimer is the CFO. Not to be nit picky/OCD or anything ;)
Mo' Money!
Do you know the carrier, not sure if Telefonica Movistar or America Movil Claro is bringing it to Guatemala on that date.
huh? no love for djibouti?
i'm dying to have one
What about the ASEAN countries? Singapore is the only one getting it. Malaysia and Thailand deserve it too.
Philippines is in Asia
Definitely not going to be anywhere near the 200$ equivalent here in India. We are not accustomed to the phone packaged with plan deals..
http://www.apple.com/iphone/countries/ .
Duh.
Thailand damnit!!! Bring it to Thailand quick already.
So many people in Bangkok already are carrying an iPhone around it isn't even funny (including me). If Apple thought slightly more smartly, they'd officially release the iPhone in Thailand and stop losing their business to unlocked phones bought it from other countries, and in contrast, make huge money out of everyone.
the other one might be Korea.
there has been lot of rumors on carrier agreement and
preparation of Iphone advertisement.
Of course Apple never heard of Slovenia. The small country to the south of Austria that borders with Italy, Croatia, Hungary and the already mentioned Austria.
Why am I so angry? Because the iPhone 3G will bo on sale in such "great" countries as Romania and Bulgaria but not in Slovenia, member of EU since 2004, that has the euro since 2007 and is in all aspects better developed than the above two (or El Salvador and Hungary if you prefer).
Angry and disappointed,
zee
Here's the price matrix for Globe subscribers in the Philippines when it hits the shelves on August 22:
http://iphone3g.globe.com.ph/i/i?id=2256650
Seriously, US$1000.00 for the prepaid kit!!! That's more than enough to get me a decent laptop or pay for my car's monthly amortization!
And the price for a two year contract is also way overpriced!
NUTS!
i like i phone i am wating long time for this phone
Im gonna flip if Taiwan is not in the unknown four...
Vodafone Turkey announced it months ago but they couldn't get their act together yet. Disappointing.
