Froggy @ Aug 7th 2008 3:48PM
I'm hoping for a "black power" moment
Frank @ Aug 7th 2008 3:35PM
boycott china.
giantenemycrab @ Aug 7th 2008 3:48PM
if you live in the US, that's near impossible to do.
Wayne @ Aug 7th 2008 3:56PM
Yes! Let's boycott China, you can start by returning your stimulus check to China since that's where it came from.
Mycroft @ Aug 7th 2008 4:20PM
It doesn't really work that way.
Wayne @ Aug 7th 2008 5:25PM
Is accepting their money any different than accepting their goods? The hundreds of millions we'll owe in interest alone defeats the purpose of a boycott.
Mert @ Aug 7th 2008 6:29PM
Let's be fare and boycott USA to for all their wrongdoings, too, shall we?
Chris Macdonald @ Aug 8th 2008 7:17PM
what wrongdoings?
GreezyG @ Aug 7th 2008 3:35PM
I'm not really interested in the Olympics. I think most of us (engadget readers) will watch just because there will be SO MUCH HD.
Froggy @ Aug 7th 2008 3:47PM
with you on this. I don't think I could care less about the Olympics if I tried. I don't remember who had the story... I think NBC, or maybe it was in the New Yorker... the basic idea being that the story at the Olympics is not the games themselves, but China in general. If there is one thing I'm interested in is how China will react to what will be going on. and presently, they don't "disappoint" - heavy-handiness, brutality, closing down access, etc. Got to love a communist system :)
CraigJ @ Aug 7th 2008 3:37PM
f*ck China.
Dillon @ Aug 7th 2008 3:52PM
I wouldn't do that if I were you. They've got 1,000,000,000 people to "f*ck* you back.
alex @ Aug 7th 2008 3:59PM
why did you say that china made more than half the products in your house.you should throw that stuff away by saying that

I bought the Olympics Triplecast package.
The rest of you enjoy your taped delayed games!
Wwhat @ Aug 7th 2008 4:21PM
I'll enjoy avoiding the whole thing completely.
justin @ Aug 7th 2008 5:13PM
Between the Triplecast and Woodstock 99, I don't know which is the bigger bust.
Krush @ Aug 7th 2008 3:52PM
yay ... now I can catch all the fencing and water polo games in HD --- good times.
Quikboy @ Aug 7th 2008 3:59PM
Awesome! I love the Olympics. Not just this one, but any worldwide Olympics. It's wonderful to see a bunch of nations competing for medals in a wide variety of sports. And even if you're not into the sports part, it's always fun to see and root which countries go to the top. It's also amazing how much the host nation puts into making the venues and city better, and what things they're willing to do. I don't really care about China's government and the bad things they do. I'm hoping the Olympics could maybe get China to be better on the human rights thing. But I'm in it for the Olympics. The competition. The sports.
Jason Barlow @ Aug 7th 2008 4:53PM
Yeah--Worldwide Olympics are my favorite kind, too. Do you realize how many people were displaced in China for these games? China sucks big donkey balls!
Timmy @ Aug 8th 2008 1:44PM
I can't Wait to see the hot female athletes wearing thin aerodynamic clothing, God bless Titty Hardons, Camel Toes and Bev Cleave in HD.

When's does the underwater basket weaving event start?
kjb434 @ Aug 7th 2008 4:03PM
As long as they don't do the stupid athlete profiles!
That's the worst part of any olympic games. Show me the competition. I don't care about their hardships and life to get there. If i wanted it, i'll ask them.
konshuss @ Aug 7th 2008 4:37PM
with an attitude like that the only thing you should be asking is 'do you want fries with that?'
kjb434 @ Aug 7th 2008 4:41PM
When I'm supposed at ask that? It's hard to do that from my office on the 40th floor working as an engineer. Maybe I'll make the next bridge you drive on a little weaker.....
But really, the profiles are stupid. It wastes a lot of time. Especially when they show the profiles for athletes from another country.
EricR @ Aug 7th 2008 4:57PM
@kjb434
Have to agree with you on this one.
Interesting how their whole lives are leading up to one point and then if they make it (and are coherent) they get to be TV announcers and if they don't make it they get to sell cars or something.

Instead of boycotting China I'm boycotting the games. I refuse to discuss or even read about them. China should NEVER have been allowed to host those games. But then again as long as Guantanamo Bay's Gulag exists I don't think the US should be allowed to host them either.
Jeff @ Aug 7th 2008 8:07PM
How is this related to gadgets?
John H. @ Aug 7th 2008 8:17PM

CaptSaltyJack @ Aug 7th 2008 8:30PM
Whatevs. I'm pissed at China for several reasons, so I won't be watching the Olympics this year. I agree with Jon Doe (why was he low ranked?), China should not have been allowed to host the games. Why?
* Lead paint in children's toys
* Killer pet food (and I don't mean "killer" in the good sense)
* Cruelty to animals - http://www.peta.org/feat-china1.asp
* Most server break-in attempts we see at work come from China
* Cheap, shitty knockoff gadgets
* Beijing is polluted as f*ck, why can't they take care of their city?
Shall I go on? China has definitely lost its honor. I know dudes from China who are ashamed of their own country, similar to how I'm ashamed of our country for having a filthy, crooked neo-conservative administration.
Ok I'm off my soap box.
xuwq @ Aug 7th 2008 9:16PM
You guys really need to write these words on engadget? The ceremonny will be start tonight, I will watch it.Without you , there will be billions of people with olympics. So go away, stand in the dark place, and boycotting china and olympics. we people with the people in the world who love peace also boycotting you.go back to mars.
Eric @ Aug 8th 2008 12:44AM
Hahaha, another brainwashed Chinese citizen "standing up" for their "glorious" country's emergence. Go back to living in your "harmonious society" where nobody is allowed to express their opinion, unless it happens to coincide with what the government tells you to think.
Crooked Style @ Aug 7th 2008 9:21PM
who gives a crap if you don't watch them, i bet the majority will.
Hariton @ Aug 7th 2008 11:50PM
I want to be informed of the latest information of the beijin olympic games
Jeff @ Aug 8th 2008 12:06AM
Apparently not watching the Olympics is for the cool house kids who are 'with it'. Makes them feel they're doing the best for society when in the end all they have is keyboards and big language. Those people hanging signs on lamp posts...even though its stupid...they are out there doing something.
The rest of you are sitting at home watching TV and then proudly proclaiming to yourself "I'm doing my part by telling people that already know hur hur hur".
Eric @ Aug 8th 2008 12:49AM
Or maybe some of us just don't like the fact that they are a dishonest, power hungry and overbearing nation.
Remember when they were bidding to host these games? How they said that they would put an end to the pollution? How they would allow reporters to freely report on the games and associated happenings? Yeah...lots of broken promises.
China is a nation of lies and deceit. Try going there. See how many times you get taken advantage of. Those people are hardly better than animals.
M @ Aug 8th 2008 11:13PM
hardly better than animals??
wow, you've really revealed your character. You could have made your point without being an asshole.
Skazer @ Aug 8th 2008 12:17AM
Who knew that idiotic trolls would infest this article with political crap?
Eric @ Aug 8th 2008 12:40AM
HD doesn't matter if everything is covered in a layer of pollution.
I'm boycotting this year's Olympics. It was a terrible mistake to allow Beijing to be the host. They've broken so many promises and spewed so many lies, that to give them my patronage would go against everything I stand for.
No, I'm not opposed to taking their money or buying goods from them. If they can manufacture them more cost effectively than anyone else, then so be it. That doesn't mean that I have to like them.
