@Kurian
Because he is stepping down from his full time role here @Engadget.
Do I need to fully restore my phone? Supposedly if I just hit the upgrade button it survives the activation and remains unlocked, sans Cydia + it's apps.
If I do, I'll wait for the next version.

Okay, so let me just clear some stuff up -
I have an unlocked iPhone 3G (16GB) on firmware 2.0. If I update my iPhone 3G onto a jailbroken iPSW, and this updates the baseband, will this mess up my unlock?
And if people arn't sure, and I try updating, when I restore to the backup that I have now, will it restore it exactly to where it was before I updated (as in, unlocked ect) just in case it doesn't work?
Thanks
isn't saying "with a capital L" kinda redundant with the "LAME" in capitals already? Or does that just make it lAME since you would have hit the caps key twice?
You have got to be somewhere around 14-15 years old. I mean how else do explain feeling so elevated by purchasing products from a company that charged $400 for an iphone only to have them turn around put it on steroids and charge half as much? Especially when there are other companies out there who would allow you more features, freedom and individuality for a better price? I have an ipod and it is the largest hunk of junk, I felt so bad when my Dad gave it to me as a gift, like wow what am I supposed to do with this? It works as an external hard drive now, though not that well considering the battery needs changed every few months. How do you sell a product like this, you really have to catch a fool and tell him its the trendy thing to do, in some sort of new American way. "If you don't buy what we say is cool then you need Viagra! You don't want that do you?"
All I'm going to say to the people talking about bricking the iPhone is this: It is really hard to brick the phone. You have to try or be a complete moron. By moron I mean that you probably should not be touching a computer in the first place. All you have to do is do a restore & apple will never know you unlocked/jailbroke it. So everyone LYAO @ stupid people who bought the stupid iPhone just to brick it and loose their warranty can stop commenting on that issue. It's null. I thought this was a tech blog. Where are all the tech savvy comments? Anyways just wanted to throw that out there. I'm personally waiting for WinPwn 2.5.

is this safe for 1st gen iPhone users with tmobile
?
I'll take my question off the air thanks
The iphone dev team have said that the 1st gen is so pwned that you can do what you like and they can still jailbreak and unlock it.
So with a 1st gen you really have no worries at all.
That was some funny ass stuff:)
Strong manly rod. LOL. One question though, Does that mean my lady has a "STRONG MANLY ROD" also?
hehe
is a way of life
Thank you for all of information.
Does that mean that it fixes the 2.0.1 fix on unlocked phones? Can I update to 2.0.1 and still keep my phone unlocked to T-Mobile?
Yes
I have a 3G iPhone running 2.0 OTB. Can I use PwnageTool to update to 2.0.1 and jailbreak without changing the baseband?
Baseband changes are only done for unlocks, which aren't capable on the iPhone 3G yet. Only jailbreaking is possible.
My bad I meant bootloader. But from what I understand it doesn't and won't effect my future unlocking of the phone
I don’t know why this site brings grief to so many people, I appreciate this information....lol its amazing that the same ones commenting negative but yet they keep coming back....Thanks for the insight!

Is anyone stopping to consider what they're gaining? I don't know if its the lure of the itunes store and likelihood of payment but developers don't seem to be in much of a hurry to port their applications to 2.0+ and make them available via Cydia or Installer 4..Early days though and once you've jailbroken your device you have tethering, Gui customization and a decent nes emulator.. But to be honest with games being written for the iphone that graphically are on a par with the game boy advanced, nostalgia via mario 3 and paperboy starts to look a bit tame..
I ran pwnage this morning, and it worked fine, reallty I just wanted the last fm client mobile scrobbler back but turns out the developer has given up and written a legit last fm client that plays nice with apple sadly it doesn't scrobble as it needs to run in the background..Ho hum.
So long story short, I restored my iphone to the legit firmware as frankly at the moment there just isn't anything worth jailbreaking for..
But its up to you, some folk will do it just because they can..meh..
I do it for the custom icons, themes, wallpapers, slider bars, tethering, IM for more than AIM, and MANY more services.
Cheers
:-)
I have spent 1hr jailbreaking the phone with the new 2.0.1 update.
Everything went find and now I think I just screwed up. when the phone restarted, itunes came up with this window asking do I want to setup a new phone or restore from a previous backup.
Now since this is the first time I am doing this I thought that all my previous settings, preferences, songs, movies, apps etc would be there after the jailbreak process was completed.
does that mean that I have to set all that over again?
I choose the option to restore from a previous backup ... does that mean that the iphone 3G would no longer be jailbroken?
can anyone confirm this!
It just means that now you have a jailbroken phone with all of your previous settings intact. You're fine.
Yea, you are correct Y3k-Bug ... the phone was restored back to how it was previously with the exception of the installer icon on the phone.
But itunes keeps bring up that "set up your phone" window. How do I get ride of it or must I restore from the same backup again or choose "set up as a new iphone'?
help
you know there is a whole community for iphone modding. www.modmyifone.com
You know what man? Thats a REALLY weird bug that I've encountered as well. Its a bug from either the new iTunes 7.7.1, or 2.0.1, because I had the issue when I legitimately upgraded to 2.0.1, and also when I did the jailbreak today.
Anyway, to fix it attach your iPhone. You'll see that same screen prompting you to restore. Click the restore button. The MOMENT you see that little box come up that says its restoring your iPhone, unplug the phone from the cable. If you timed it properly, when you reconnect the phone iTunes will see it the way its supposed to.
Apple's software has been quite buggy as of late in regards to the iPhone. Its been really odd.

My bad ... I just noticed that my itunes music, movies, tv shows did not get sync. so the question is, should I restore again?
just sync it dummy.
The backup process only saves your phone settings. Anytime you restore you have to re-sync all of your music and movie content.
1 word: winpwn.
Will this fix the feature that allows Apple to delete our apps from our ePhones?
They can't do that, it was your typical case of bloggers all reporting on something they had no clue about.
The setting your referencing is in regards to preventing apps from getting access to GPS that shouldn't have access.
Ok .. all is fine now, everything is back to normal.
By-the-way, am I suppose to see the Cydia icon on the phone or is it now replaced by "Installer"?
the phone doesn't feel any different, now I just have to figure how to install non-apple apps on the phone.
thanks guys
I think this just about sums the hole thing up!

Hi peeps,
I can't find any source to add for Agile messenger.. can anybody point me to the right one?
after applying this, it look ok except for location service by only wifi stop.
I did this to 1st gen iPhone located at Japan.
I successfully created a new "custom" firmware file using Pwnage Tool 2.0.2 to use on my 1st gen iPhone. All went well and I am now using the latest Apple software update. Unlocked, jailbroke, and activated.
Is there any technical reason why someone else with a 1st gen iPhone could not bypass all the creation hoopla and simply use the restore file I created?
Just want to say apple did not start any revolution, palm had touch interface way before apple even knew what a mp3 was, they also had the touch interface phone first too. all apple did was take it and make it look a lot prettier and advertise it well.

iPhone lacks keyboard?? Umh yeah it has the best in the world. You just keep trying to defend your phone while iPhone continues to outsell it's stock and becomes avaliable in new contries. Lmao! You don't even have an app store. I can't wait till others copy it so you anti-apple fanboys can say that apple never started the revolution, as usual. Apple ftw(as usual)"
@Bill
I think your asking if someone else can use the custom restore.ipsw you made. The answer is yes and they do. Many people upload their custom firmware online for others, they are not hard to find.
