Slacker G2 WiFi radio gets more personal thanks to the FCC
A lovely picture like this can mean only one thing -- the fine feds over at the FCC are leaking another unannounced product. You're looking at the new Slacker G2 WiFi radio which appears to have slimmed down from the original Slacker Portable while moving the skip and play/pause buttons to the front of a the device. A peek at the guts reveals a Broadcom BCM4325GKFBG chip which means 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, and FM receiver. We also spotted 4GB of flash storage and a 730mAH battery for what it's worth. Check the User Quickstart Guide and a few more pics in the gallery below.

I for one am excited. I wanted a Slacker Portable when they came out, but they were too big and the touch part of the screen got really bad reviews. This looks like a great second gen attempt.

Nice mid-90s retro design.

Why does it look like they gave the FCC a unit that was carried around in some dude's pocket for a year? Grimy.

It passed the sandstorm test

So apparently it *won't* blend?? FINALLY, an indestructible gadget! :)

What if it really does?

That's the distressed look version. It costs 80 bucks more.

So anybody using one of the current models? The idea seems nice for rural areas with poor choice of radio, but the $199 price seems a bit high for what it does. I also did not like the fact that I could only skip 6 songs per hour (damn you DMCA!).
Drop the price a little and bring in some Mac support so I can take it between my machines and then they may have a deal!

You're looking at the death of Sirius/XM there, my friend. This coming from an XM subscriber.

Not if you want talk radio or anything live. Or special events, like concerts and artist interviews.

I have XM and the first gen Slacker Portable. There are far, far too many bugs and problems with the first-gen device to make it a sat-radio killer. Not to mention no live talk content. Even with the smaller, sleeker device - the interface needs a complete overhaul - they should honestly fire the first team and start over from scratch. They are charging $300 for a device that frequently "forgets" network keys, and sometimes takes 10 seconds or more to acknowledge a button press. I wish I could return it....

Almost forgot - there's currently no Metallica, AC/DC, Beastie Boys, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, etc. etc. heard on the device due to licensing restrictions.
How's that gonna beat sat / terrestrial radio again?

did the fcc approve this for an impromptu session of broom stick hockey on a lunch break too?
