Motorola V70 Retro handset gets spotted

It looks like Motorola is set to give its standard V70 handset a bit of sprucing up, with this new and hereto unseen V70 Retro model now making its first appearance courtesy of CTI-Miami.com. Unfortunately, apart from the fact that it boasts a generous 5-megapixel camera, there aren't any firm details on the phone at the moment -- even that model name is apparently subject to change. There are at least a few more pics of it though, and you can find those at the link below.

Ugly?
Smileypanda @ Aug 15th 2008 3:13PM
The FCC really has a way with bringing out the ugly in a device.
deyanimay @ Aug 15th 2008 6:19PM
Where's the screen?
Mr Maze @ Aug 15th 2008 12:21PM
Barf. If you want to go retro, Moto, please just give us a hopped up StarTac. Or MicroTac.
Tony C @ Aug 15th 2008 5:26PM
You mean like they intro'd in Korea last year?
http://www.intomobile.com/2007/04/11/motorola-goes-retro-with-new-startac-model-startac-iii-ms900.html
Mr Maze @ Aug 15th 2008 7:11PM
No, I want an original StarTac case with 3G or Rev A guts.
konshuss @ Aug 15th 2008 12:22PM

From My Cube @ Aug 15th 2008 12:25PM

Knives_Out @ Aug 15th 2008 12:29PM
is this thing a joke? please tell me this isn't going to be an actual release ... it looks like something I'd buy at toys r us.
dagreenman18 @ Aug 15th 2008 12:37PM
my god that's fugly.
Christian @ Aug 15th 2008 12:35PM
OMG that thing is absolutely hideous! I'm a bit embarrassed for motorola....
hfm @ Aug 15th 2008 12:35PM
It's actually a Pez dispenser.
Fred @ Aug 15th 2008 12:53PM
Here's the thing. How can something be "retro" when the inspiration isn't even 10 years old?
Hancock @ Aug 15th 2008 12:38PM
I loved the original v70 when it came out.. it was ridiculously expensive and unlike anything else on the market at that time. Those were the times when Motorola phones were actually considered cool and stylish.
I probably still wouldn't buy this new phone. Moto's days are over, unless they come up with something new and ground-breaking.
Corey @ Aug 15th 2008 12:44PM
Why not just remake the original v70 if you're going to do this? It was far better looking than this
RNDMIDEAS @ Aug 15th 2008 12:44PM
i'm a bit confused. does this have a screen? I see a 2 line display, but wouldn't that be useless fro use with the integrated camera?
Corey @ Aug 15th 2008 12:45PM
the big black circle is the screen.
Phoenix @ Aug 15th 2008 1:41PM
That HAS to be the most fucked up screen I've ever seen
brian @ Aug 15th 2008 12:45PM
Gotta love how it says "DO NOT PHOTOGRAPH" on the side of the phone.
Zeth Ethereal @ Aug 15th 2008 12:48PM
holy batman gadget! that thing is hideous!
Totalfixation @ Aug 15th 2008 12:50PM
And you wonder why they are close to going bankrupted.
Fopes @ Aug 15th 2008 1:01PM
Why go for 5mp with phone like that?? This will be flop. At least sell these niche wierd looking phones cheap with okish features(a'la Nokia's 7xxx series)
thenumber81 @ Aug 15th 2008 1:01PM
wth? that thing looks retarted...
Kizorblade @ Aug 15th 2008 1:04PM
Roadkill has more sex appeal than this gadget.
Marq @ Aug 15th 2008 1:09PM
Seriously Motorola...WTF is that? I no longer have any empathy for you. I used to think that it would take a kick in the a$$ to get you to produce some respectable phones, then you sack tap us and release "phones" like this. Burn in hell.
Ryan Trevisol @ Aug 15th 2008 1:14PM
The original v70 was pretty cool but it had one of the highest SAR ratings of all time.
Motorola can't seem to mate the right features to the right form factors.
DssTrainer @ Aug 15th 2008 1:19PM
Looks like a star-trek communicator.... :: bleerpm:: "Captains Log... stardate 28.5552 rounded off to the nearest... decimal point"
josearoldan @ Aug 15th 2008 1:25PM
My mom had a original v70, and my uncle had a Startac, by then I tough those where there coolest phones ever, Now I look at the v70 and say bah!
iEye @ Aug 15th 2008 1:33PM
Nothing screams "I'm a cheap Wh0re" like a Motorola phone these days.
Ladies please stay away
the FCC should label this "DO NOT BUY"
Ashvala @ Aug 16th 2008 10:59AM
Microsoft oPhone, coming soon through the motorola branding!
Rich @ Aug 15th 2008 1:54PM
The V70 was a SHOCKING phone so why remake it? It looked nice but it was terribly unstable and the UI made it almost unusable.

AlphaTeam @ Aug 15th 2008 3:04PM
Why would Motorola return one of their worst designs, lowest selling, and lowest performing devices?
Jesse Dula @ Aug 15th 2008 3:41PM
Ugly. Ugly. And more ugly.
qwerty613 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:50PM
DO NOT WANT!
JavaPip @ Aug 15th 2008 4:09PM
Recal this spoof on YouTube... remind you of anything...

R1cebrner @ Aug 15th 2008 5:05PM
They should just bring back the v80 with a touch screen it was better looking
Agent42 @ Aug 15th 2008 5:34PM
I know the original V70 had a screen in the circle, but is there going to be one on this model?
Kind of pointless to have a 5MP camera without a decent screen to use (and the circular screen would be shit anyway.)
canyoncarver @ Aug 15th 2008 5:35PM
This is what a company in their death throes does.... start trying to recycle what was considered hip a few years ago and sell it to the people who were lusting over it back then.
God forbid they might actually make something that would effectively compete in the market they are in.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Aug 15th 2008 5:37PM
Looks alot like the idea that I drew up when I mentioned my Moto-Switchblade idea a month ago. Hmmm I've been wondering who's been hacking my network.
p.s. whats with the new login?
Bender @ Aug 15th 2008 8:37PM
What the hell? I can't believe how negative you guys are about this phone. The V70 was popular. It was a form factor that sold phones. Why the hell WOULD they want to ignore that?
My vote of confidence is in for Motorola. They build durable, long lasting products. I'll buy one of these.
I also think a new StarTAC is long overdue for the States, too. Screw Asia. We want one! In CDMA!
M @ Aug 15th 2008 11:44PM
well i have to agree with you in that all of the motorolas I've had have been very durable, reliable phones, good reception too.
I've owned the e815, v265, v180, v70, among others
霽月瀛台 @ Aug 15th 2008 10:47PM
It looks nerdy!
sr @ Aug 16th 2008 1:55AM
I guess suicide is better than getting killed...
TMM @ Aug 16th 2008 6:30AM
Ohhh ... I remember how MUCH I wanted a v70 ... they still look cool today.
Of course I'm not gonna ditch my iPhone for any other phone right now:
But I'm a Motorola fan: sure, not always the best feature lists, but always beautiful and reliable phones.
Eric @ Aug 18th 2008 12:16AM
Oh man, I used to want one of those V70's SO bad. I thought it was the coolest phone ever.
chicagogreg @ Aug 18th 2008 9:40AM
Can you say Chinese Knockoff?
