RED brings the trademark pain against LG's Scarlet HDTV
You wouldn't think that anyone in the market for a $3,000 handheld camera capable of shooting 3K HD at 100MB/s would somehow get confused enough to end up with a mediocre LG plasma TV, but it seems like the folks at RED are worried -- the company's lawyers are preparing an opposition to LG's filing for the "Scarlet" trademark, and they've filed for their own mark. It looks like RED is getting pretty serious about protecting its marks -- president Jim Jannard is politely asking RED fans to include a trademark disclaimer when they post about the company's products, and he says that the proceedings against LG are "just the tip of the iceberg." Honestly, we think RED's going to have a tough time selling a judge on the likelihood of confusion between a consumer-oriented HDTV and a decidedly pro-grade camera, but we've been surprised in the past -- we'll see how this one plays out.

You wouldn't confuse a real iPod with a TV called an iPod either but you'd certainly have a bit more to say in that post.
What the hell does it matter whether they mix them up or not, it's protecting trademarks. If they don't they loose it, like Hoover.

Umm, with all due respect Jim Jannard, fuck you.
Hey Red my daughters name is Scarlet... come and get me I dare you
Unless your daughter is a TV or a video camera, your post is stupid.
Advance Female Android Aiko aka "my daughter Scarlet". HD video included.

Jannard simply told us it would help RED's trademark case if we put those disclaimer's on our sites. Since pretty much everyone who has purchased REDs is blown away by their quality and how RED treats their customers we want to comply in order to boost RED's success. It was definitely not a command by Jannard.
Captain Scarlet was unavailable for comment.
@ Billy
The RED Scarlet, a smaller 3K camera was unveiled at NAB with a suggested price (it's not shipping yet) of around or under $3000. The current available RED camera The RED One is the most expensive piece they have now at $17,500.
perhaps Scarlet is a trademarked name for an upcomming model?
This is not really related to this post but it would be funny be know more about how ipod and (generic) mp3-players relate. I'm asking since it's fairly common to hear people relate to any mp3-player as "an ipod". Since it's used in such a common way, would it be possible for any manufacturer to use the name ipod in their product name, kind of like "An Archos ipod-player" and with a chans of winning a legal disput with Apple?
Billy Bob, get -your- facts straight. The RED Scarlet 3K is slated to be "a 3K masterpiece targeting an under $3K price point."
