Screenshots of iPhone Nike+ running app emerge, we're out of breath already
It has taken its sweet, sweet time in arriving, but it seems the iPhone Nike+ running application is just... about... here. A slew of new screenshots of the application have emerged, and while there are no juicy tidbits to accompany 'em (release date, cost, etc.), we all know how many lines of text a single snapshot is worth. Hang tight runners, the app you've been waiting (and waiting) for can't be far from the finish line now.

Great, they got the Nike app working for the iPhone / iPod Touch. Now can Apple please focus on getting their own Apple Radio Remote working with the iPhone / iPod Touch. I know it is a stretch to ask a company to make their own first party product compatible with each other but I think Apple is up to the task.
It's not like you could really use it since it's so easy to blindly switch between songs in your pocket, hell is that touchscreen useful for that, was a friggin PAIN with the old 5G to do that. Or wait... it's the other way round...
While this looks really cool and has great functionality, I don't want to take my iPhone out with me. A) I don't want to be accessible while I'm working out and B) I don't want to get my nice $300 phone all sweaty.
Maybe I'm all alone on this one. I'm up in the air if I would every use this product + app.
I don't mind getting stuff sweaty, also I'm not going to put a case on my iphone. I don't see the point in bulking it out, if it breaks, it breaks.
Airplane mode. Neoprene arm band.
If you put your device in the proper case that straps around your arm, then no sweat can get to it. Though I just use my X51V and put it in my pocket, but that's just me until I get a case for the lovely behemoth...
i work out with my ipod all the time - just sitting in my shorts it gets all wet with sweat at the gym.
Just clean it off when i get home - no biggie -
its a $500 phone - some of have cars that are thousands more! why are people so paranoid? LOL
its not as many of you guys own clear bras for your cars.
Just get the I AM FIT app.
So I can get rid of my nano when I get my iphone? Sweetness
In Soviet Russia first gen iPod Nano battery blows up and gets rid of YOU.
Verizon UI nooooooooooooo!!!!
(Am I the only one who thinks it looks like something Verizon made)?
Yeah it has the same red-orange color! I clicked the [+] for ya :-P.
Is it GPS based or that silly shoe insert?
I would hope it uses the "silly shoe insert", because half my running is indoors on a treadmill. I would hate to run for 45 minutes and get a "0 miles" readout...
same here Jimmy.

Maybe neither? The silly shoe insert is just an accelerometer. I assume this app won't need the nike+ hardware, since the iPhone has an accelerometer built in. And yeah, it could use the GPS if available for increased accuracy when actually in motion, but it'd probably drain the heck out of your battery.
Personally, I’m curious about the music playback and status voiceover portion of the app. The original nike+ iPod app would interface with the music on the device, but iPhone apps are sandboxed and there’s no API to talk to the iPod app (to control playback, get a list of songs, etc.). I wonder if Apple’s given them special access, or if they’ve come up with another method on their own (like making you add a copy of the music you want to hear during a run outside of iTunes).
There is zero chance this would use the iPhone's accelerometer as you'd have to secure it pretty much down on your shoe or ankle.
It's not as if the Nike+ insert is expensive though - I think the Nike+iPod kit went for something like ~$30? It's not free, but it's not too bad.
OK, I'm confused. Do I need to plug in the Nike pedometer thing or does it use the accelerometer or the GPS in the phone?
If the App uses GPS that would be very cool, as I find pedometers to be somewhat inaccurate as my stride changes depending on hills and how tired I am.
If this is released for the iPod Touch also, you will need to plug in the Nike+ receiver and transmitter. Also, what if you want to run in the gym with your iPhone that solely relies on GPS? You will need the combo for that too on the iPhone.
I can think of two scenarios. Either, the app will be free and the user will be required to buy the Nike+ dongle + shoe insert (despite the fact that it isn't needed since the iPhone has the required hardware), or the app will cost something and it will use the built in GPS.
If I were more of a pessimist I would guess that the app will cost something _and_ the dongle is required, but I'm trying to be optimistic today.
If I run in the gym the treadmill tells me what I need to know. I write it down and log it in a spreadsheet later...
There is no way it would use the internal accelerometer, you would really need it strapped to your shoe. I don't know the exact price, but I was under the impression the Nike insert wasn't exactly breaking the bank, maybe ~$30ish?
I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Mike. Running with an iPhone strapped to you is a bit bloody rich. REAL runners wouldn't be seen dead with an iPhone strapped to them. Its bulky and a waste of time.
As much as I love Nike+, I'd stick with my runners log, zen stone, and mapmyrun.com anyday of the week
And THAT is why running will continue to be considered and elitist, caucasian activity.
Because there is always talks of what "real" runners do and don't do. And what they are and are not. Get over yourself. It's an activity, plain and simple. And however people want to go about participating in it is up to them.
I for one look forward to this app. And would be stoked if I didn't have to use the pedometer and could just rock the accelerometer.
One neoprene case with a healthy mix of airplane mode, and you're set.
Define "real" runners. I ran 10 miles on Sunday. Am I a "real" runner? I'd love to have a solution that let me have my cell phone, iPod, and pace/distance information. Now I use a Shuffle, and a GPS unit, and I leave my phone home, which I shouldn't do, but I havent purchased the proper case to carry it with me when I run.
If this uses GPS and works well, I'd much rather use this solution. The iPhone doesn't weight much more than the GPS unit I currently use...
I am a REAL runner. I consistently do races over the summer and half marathons. Your attitude Ross towards what a real runner is, is stupid and close minded. I would definitely consider running with an iphone during my morning runs. It's actually something i have been desiring.
Yeah, when will we see the day when a black man wins a marathon?
ross is a gay name for an elitist. yeah i went there.
Well, I've seen this comment multiple times now, and I've thus hit that (-) button quite a bit. Could someone explain, or is this just someone having their way with their keyboard?
Oh and that (-) sure looks like a button I'd like to hit. :)
what is she asian?
Hilarious App!
Most IPhone users are either anorexic due to a diet high in sweat dripping from Steve Job' balls or they are so morbidly obese that the hardest workout they get is putting on their pants in the morning.
So is this another of the great innovative iphone apps that should persuade us to buy an iphone or are they still to come? Amazing what the pleases the isheep.
Okay, first of all, real runners don't run with anything my high-tech than a watch. Second of all, that's slower than an 8 minute mile, pick up the pace a little.
Who appointed you the arbiter of what a "real" runner is? People like you reflect poorly on the rest of us. People like you think you're better than people who, like myself, have ankle and knee issues and can't run 7 miles an hour. I run half marathons, and I finish them. Not quickly, but I finish. Next time you're in the gym benching 135LB, don't ask me for a spot, M'Kay?
Okay, first of all, "real" runners don't run with anything more high-tech than a stopwatch. Second of all, that's slower than an 8 minute mile, pick up the pace a little.
Sorry if this is a double post.
Well, what'd you know, as soon as I submit the second one, the first one shows up. Really sorry about that.
Um... It says another network name at the top left... Doesn't that mean it's jailbroken? Or maybe, now that I see it says iPhon.fr, just French?
ok, surprised no one asked... why is the distance travelled measured in kilometers and the measurement of pace is in feet?
Pace is time per distance. That is 5 minutes 6 seconds per km
Release date is 8/31
There are several other apps right now that track your runs one of them is runkeeper. It will also upload your runs to a website for archive and viewing. Although this app looks a little more involved. I have used runkeeper several times now, and although it is fairly simple it does what it says.
I can't wait for iPhone and dailymile.com integration. It beats the Nike+ flashed based site hands-down!
Sorry everyone, bad news. A source at NIKE has told me that this is not what is planned for the iPhone/iTouch and these are just mockups someone did on their own. The folds in Beaverton are working on something new and exciting for the iPhone but this isn't it.
sorry.
hopefully it works better than their flash-based website, which is slow and, basically, sucks as a UI.
Get RunKeeper or iTrail. Both use GPS and show you pretty maps.
