Meizu M8 gets detailed in new words, pictures

As you may have noticed, Meizu CEO J. Wong just can't seem to stop talking about his pride and joy, the M8, and he's now let loose yet another pair of new pictures, as well as some further details on the phone. Somewhat surprisingly, J. Wong says that the device will only be available in white initially (which he apparently likes better anyway), and that it will officially be called simply the M8, and not the "M8 mini one" as it had been officially known before. He also reiterates that the company plans to finally release the phone in October, or November "at the latest." Head on past the break for the second pic, and hit up the link below for a few more tidbits.

I just don't get it. It's too late to steal iphone thunder
hello @ Aug 20th 2008 12:45PM
however, this is a lot better.
And this is kinda different from the iphone.
Look at the HTC touches. They are not "too late to steal iphone thunder"
Juxtah @ Aug 20th 2008 12:48PM
If it's half the price, packs the same features and is allowed to be sold it just may.
Lowest Ranked @ Aug 20th 2008 12:48PM
Thats why the name sounds like you're saying 'Me Too'.
Hawkman @ Aug 20th 2008 1:08PM
It's essentially a cargo cult.
Raz @ Aug 20th 2008 2:03PM
Basically Meizu choose way back when the iPhone was announced to make a 'competitive' product to the iPhone, but seeing as they have NEVER made a phone before their R&D took forever and after multiple redesigns they got even more delayed. Now your right, most companies at this point would see the benefit in dropping a now very delayed (and lets face it) soon to be outdated (and not yet released) phone.
However Meizu put all their eggs in one basket and then took a big shit on top of it. They don't have the time and resources to refocus on making the M7 (only made a slim down version of the M6, the SL, which increased that products life by 6 months or so), so they are left with this one product to hold up their brand.
I think Meizu got in way over their head and its going to cost them, shame, their M6 is a great player, they should have just focused on making the M7.

It's still not too late to steal the Thunder's thunder though!
YesHone @ Aug 20th 2008 7:17PM
If this damn thing can get even 1 3G bar, I'd buy it over the ipwn....
YesHone @ Aug 20th 2008 7:28PM
As long as no one steals your COOKIES!

i feel like by the time this actually comes out Apple will ship Iphone number 3
hello @ Aug 20th 2008 12:43PM
nice.
freediverdude @ Aug 20th 2008 12:44PM
I take it this won't be available in the U.S., since it's such a blatant copy......
waiownsyou @ Aug 20th 2008 12:45PM
Is that an official pic from Meizu? If so, lol @ the iPhone 3G next to it.
Richard Lai @ Aug 20th 2008 12:49PM
I was about to say the same thing. They're just pouring oil over the fire.
rock99rock @ Aug 20th 2008 12:46PM
In the 1.5 yrs this thing has been "showcased", I would have assumed that hype would have dwindled by now. Its like the famed Motorola MPX all over again.
By now, this thing should have a 17" wide touchscreen and holographic controls with a quadcore toaster addon.
phanbouy @ Aug 20th 2008 1:08PM
the quadcore toaster only comes with a new checking account
waiownsyou @ Aug 20th 2008 1:11PM
Stop trying to be funny phanbuoy... you're not
phanbouy @ Aug 20th 2008 1:12PM
Coming from you that's a compliment
steven @ Aug 20th 2008 1:34PM
Well it does have all of those features and more.
720x480 LCD
Removable Battery (LOL, can't believe I'm listing this as a feature)
Unlocked
Supports loads of formats
Cheaper
USB OTG
Drag N Drop, don't have to use cluttered iTunes
rock99rock @ Aug 20th 2008 1:35PM
@waiownsyou
I think phanbouy is hilarious. You can stay in this post on one condition, waiownsyou. Sign up for a free checking account. phanbouy has the details.
rock99rock @ Aug 20th 2008 1:40PM
@steven
You should also leave my post. NONE of those specs matter since they:
1. Do not include 17" touchscreen
2. Come with quadcore toaster when signing up with free checking account
There is no point in trying to defend a phone that does not exist. I laugh at you from here.
Either leave or sign up for a free checking account.
steven @ Aug 20th 2008 5:54PM
Oh I forgot to mention that it will have the same audio chipset as the Meizu M6, which is very good.
substance90 @ Aug 20th 2008 12:46PM
Too bad Meizu are so late... if they released this at least half an year ago, I would have got one immediately, but now I`m sold for Android!
who? @ Aug 20th 2008 12:47PM
If I had a nickel for everything Meizu copied from the iPhone, I could actually afford one.
MacVicta @ Aug 20th 2008 1:05PM
After months and months of Meizu rolling out simulated images that made the anti-iPhone fanboys drool throughout 2007, I would often joke that Apple might release the 2nd Generation iPhone before the M8.
I didn't think it would actually happen.
phanbouy @ Aug 20th 2008 1:08PM
nice tanline, but there's an ipod in the way. um what were you saying?
Eddie @ Aug 20th 2008 1:14PM
Well I said that the M8 would come out before Duke Nuke Forever. Looks like I am right too! WE'RE TWINS!
MacVicta @ Aug 20th 2008 1:31PM
Not comparable, Eddie.
News of the Meizu M8 spread right after the iPhone was announced in January 2007. According to all the hype in the blogosphere, Meizu was looking to release it BEFORE the iPhone saw any light. That was the big thing about it, the Chinese were to beat the iPhone to market with their first good copycat. It would've been unprecedented.
Now here we are, months after the iPhone 3G release, two years after the parade of simulated images began and an M8 launch date is still nothing more than speculation.
That means Duke Nukem Forever could still be launched before the M8, Eddie. So you haven't been proven right about anything.
Eddie @ Aug 20th 2008 2:36PM
Jeepers! They aren't comparable? Man....
Okay sorry, enough sarcasm. I honestly can't tell if you took my reply seriously...so I'll explain. I was slightly mocking you in your "ability" to predict such a thing. Nothing personal of course, I just found it to be pointing out the obvious, even when the M8 was announced it was one of those products that was seemingly too ambitious. The vast majority of them end up being released WAY WAY after the "hopeful" release date, or coming out on(ish) time and sucking big time.
I was also using your post as a segue into a cliched joke about things that will never come out. The point wasn't the direct comparison, because obviously its not the most legitimate of comparisons.
Kennyb123 @ Aug 20th 2008 1:17PM
Hey Engadget - how about you do exactly ZERO more articles on the M8 until it's in your hands for one of your oh-so-empty "reviews"?
This phone doesn't deserve news coverage.
qrius @ Aug 20th 2008 1:17PM
Will this be avail in the US in english only?
YesHone @ Aug 20th 2008 7:18PM
Just like the screenshot shows, US English...
Deionas @ Aug 20th 2008 2:24PM
It will be the best phone ever. Yes, believe it.
Fed @ Aug 20th 2008 1:50PM
Android is going to whip the crap out of the shitty iPhone and any other variants.
A real OS is coming. The boys a Google never mess around.
Owning an iPhone is about as cool as owning a Furby at this point, its old news.
dangerouslaser @ Aug 20th 2008 2:02PM
android will most likely run on the iphone eventually.
James @ Aug 20th 2008 2:09PM
Which I guess you never had left in your stocking for Christmas, right? Another person waiting on the "next big thing to kill the iPhone." Talk about something that will be obsolete when it finally arrives, "if" it arrives.
Eddie @ Aug 20th 2008 2:41PM
Never understood these sentiments...Android is just a mobile device platform, right? How does it kill a specific phone?
Honestly if I could get an iPhone hardware with opensource platform/software (omg android?!) then that seems pretty perfect...
But anyway arguments for another thread/post/wuteva.
CaptSaltyJack @ Aug 20th 2008 2:49PM
Android = Java based. Fail. I f'ing hate Java, nothing but a resource hog.
dukemang @ Aug 20th 2008 5:35PM
He said "Furby", he he.
YOYO @ Aug 20th 2008 2:19PM
i hope andriod does run on the iphone
then maybe it will fix all them bugs the iphone having problem with
how many dam firmware updates since it been out
Kevlar @ Aug 20th 2008 2:59PM
The copycat phone makers always look at the iPhone and only see its features- a touch interface, the lack of buttons, etc. But these are just the surface of the design- they never look deeper into the philosophy that led Apple to add the features they have.
Unlike nearly all other cell phones, the iPhone was always about the user experience first. Until someone can copy that idea before they copy features, they will never come close to the ease of use and popularity of the iPhone:

dukemang @ Aug 20th 2008 5:35PM
I wonder if the M8 will win "Vaporware of the Year" award again this year?
nice2know_u @ Aug 21st 2008 5:53AM
White only?! Where did you get this from? JW said it will be available in white LATER. So the first devices will definetely be black. MeizuMe has all the information you need...
xconan @ Sep 1st 2008 3:54AM
cell phones with touchscreen interfaces came out before iphone was even out...
it just so happened that apple cleaned up the interfaces with it's industrial design
group whereas others didn't see that it was necessary until apple stole their thunder.
