I know this gamepad doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my hand, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is unusable. After nine years@Engadget, you know what I realize? Ignorance is bliss.

Wow Microsoft, going to LIMITED EDITION of an add-on controller that actually works? How about making it standard?
Microsoft's accessory strategy drives me nuts. Same people who brought you the $100 20GB hard drive.
If this controller fixes some functionality, then why is it called a "new, limited edition" controller. Shouldn't it just be "new"?
...to clarify: I know that it is in limited production, but why not just revamp all controllers from here on out. Otherwise, it's kind of like "The green controllers work. The white ones... eh... not so much."
lol yeah not the best concept photo there, I wouldn't mind a better d-pad but I highly doubt they would reconfigure the controller in such an unusable way.

No! Microsoft! Don't switch the buttons and the analog stick! I'll have to use one hand for both sticks, that is teh impossible!
Oh wait, this picture isn't real and if you read the article, the real controller is green and only has a tweaked d-pad.

Translation: We dropped the ball on the first controller so that we could beat Sony to the market, same goes for the huge power brick, and bolt on wifi adapter. We're still not sure if we have it exactly right so we'll make it a limited edition.
No North American Release? Limited edition? I smell a new 360 SKU coming up with a non-green controller with a fixed D-Pad and new game pack in for the holidays. At Minimum, it will be the De facto Elite Controller, To justify the price difference between the elite and the standard SKUs since the hdd space doesn't do that so well anymore.
You don't spend engineering dollars fixing the one MAJOR problem with your controller and then make it a limited edition, and then not even give it to your biggest market. Expect an announcement in the next 2-4 weeks about a north american release.

Its unnatural... It goes against controller evolution.... I may rampage my local Game Station store--luddite-like--smashing every one I see like a rabid anti-GM crop protestor.
so microsoft is saying you must go out and buy this working controller, because our other controllers suck? anyone surprised?

Maybe I might have a chance now with finishing level 4 in Frogger and some other xbla games that I still suck at.

What makes the xbox controller so bad is that they
A) made it wwaaaay too fat to be comfortable
B) went out of their way to make it look less like a PS2/3 controller just by flipping the dpad and left analog. This breaks all symmetry and common sense. The PS2 style gamepad has clearly won, which is why 90% of pc gamepads (logitech, saitek, thrustmaster, etc) follow that design.
All I can say is Thank God for the PS2->Xbox converters like dreambox. I'd have returned my xbox years ago if I didnt have that.

It'll probably be just like when they went from the Duke to the controller S on the original Xbox, new d-pad controllers quietly replacing the old ones.

Obviously you're supposed to use the controller with your right hand and right foot. Toe gaming is all the rage in Japan now.

Yeah, its fake, if you look at the dome around the D-pad, you can see the shadow of the photoshoped analog stick, and you will similarily notice on the right side, under the analog stick, on the lower right side of the dome, the shadow suddenly stops. clearly fake, poor photoshop job, just look at the shadows that are where they shouldn't be.
also? there are two analog sticks on one side. duuuuh. i can't believe you had to look at it that closely.
