Intel's convertible Classmate PC gets the hands-on treatment

We already got a decent enough look at Intel's new convertible Classmate PC when it made its debut at IDF yesterday, but if you're looking for a slightly more thorough examination of it, you may want to hit up Laptop Magazine, which got a chance to spend some time with the device and offer some initial impressions. As is even more apparent in these pics, the hardware is very much not finalized, with it sporting some mismatched parts and some components that may or may not make it into the final version. That said, they do seem fairly impressed by the laptop, with the built-in accelerometer working well, and the included "Quick Launcher" software shell making Windows XP considerably more accessible to students, and adults for that matter. Hit up the link below for the video hands-on and, of course, plenty more pics.

Well that certainly is a hand, and it is on the computer. Looks good to me!

Maybe the hand is showing us that the screen is scratch proof. That's why i love the ipod touch screen that's made of glass. very difficult to scratch.

Wow, joseph, you even fail at being a stupid irritation.

I have always wished XP came with a quick launch function... I wonder if I could make XP do that without extra software? Oh wait...
bidur @ Aug 21st 2008 2:32PM
sucks .... is different from what they promised .. a double touch screen . .
Phoenix @ Aug 21st 2008 3:02PM
Dude... it was OLPC that promised a double touchscreen.
Read carefully: THIS. IS. A. TOTALLY. DIFFERENT. LAPTOP. FROM. A. TOTALLY. DIFFERENT. COMPANY.

i might have to get me one of these =D

Nice way from Intel to increase the price of the Classmate to something like $500 or more per unit.
So now Intel's competitor to OLPC is 2.5x more expensive at this point.

So is this something that will be available? If it does the basic browse/email/office apps then I really would like to see some specs and a price get dished out. XP will be offered I assume? I think as a play toy dual booting with Ubuntu MID edition could be really fun. It also looks small enough to throw in a glove box or small bag. Perfect for those times when you need email or an internet browser on the road, but may not really want the heft of a full blown laptop. I think it will all come down to price though, less than $400?

"the included "Quick Launcher" software shell making Windows XP considerably more accessible to students"
RTFA. it /HAS/ XP
Jeff @ Aug 21st 2008 3:20PM
"a very pre-pre-pre-production model" hardware hasn't been finalized, so software could change even quicker... just because is has XP in this demo doesn't mean it will have it if it gets to actual production...
just hoping... didn't mean to offend or anything...

They REALLY need to work on the design of this.. its 1998 all over again :(
phanbouy @ Aug 21st 2008 3:38PM
@jesusss
do you have a lisp?
Jeff @ Aug 21st 2008 4:30PM
I don't think it looks too bad, but I would rather see it all black. Getting rid of the briefcase handle would help a lot though, lets hope that comes off easy.
