Archos 5, 7 internet media tablets now on sale

It's just been a few short days since Archos took the wraps off its new Archos 5 and Archos 7 "internet media tablets," but if you're already sold, you can now get your order in for one of 'em on Amazon (and no doubt plenty of other places shortly). Prices start at $350 for the lowest-end 60GB Archos 5, and go all the way up to $550 for a 320GB Archos 7. You can also take your pick from a range of accessories, including a DVR Snap-On or more full-fledged DVR Station ($80 and $100, respectively), a Battery Dock for $50, a Mini Dock for $30, and even a Helmet Camcorder for $130. Just don't expect any of that to arrive right away -- everything's listed with a two to four week shipping estimate.

stop with iPhone comparisons and "omg iPhone is way better" sooooooooooooooo annnnnoyingggggg... anything apple sucks so PLAIN
It would be cool to have, but $550?! Wow.
I think what's important when reading COMMENTS sections on any website is that 99.999% of readers will look at a product announcement like this and see that it is just another device with a slightly different approach and design which caters to a specific market while having enough features to perhaps stretch its market a bit.
Only a very small percentage of humans think there can be only ONE company that can make these products.
There CAN be many GOOD products in the media player genre.
But I suppose a COMMENTS section without trolls would be a bit boring.
This device sucks.. It's basically the Archos 605 but with a slightly larger screen and a different start screen. Same OS, same browser, same media players, same plugins, same games, same storage.
But LESS battery capacity and MORE weight!
Boooo Archos. These are the features I was waiting for:
- built in microphone
- an HDMI output on the device itself
- Less weight
- Thiner
- Longer battery life
- More format support (Ogg, 24bit / 32bit wav)
I'm very disappointed with you. Re releasing the same device with a different name and box.
Im sure you would use that Microphone ALL the time. I am also sure that carrying a device of such gargantuan size would really wear you out.
Hey, the DVR Station has COMPONENT INPUTS. Seriously, this thing can record off Component at HD resolutions? And there's even an HDMI port, though its not obvious from the picture whether that's an input or an output, so I'll assume its an input, since there hasn't yet been a device for recording off HDMI...
If you looked up FANBOY in the dictionary Charbaxs picture is there
Any Archos product is "perfect" to him, he runs archos fan website and deletes any negative that people post about archos, obviously works for them or has a big financial interest in the company.
Take what he says with a grain of salt
when is the archos 5 or 7 coming out in UK it says early september but when is early september?
Anyone know if we would still be stuck with the 4gb file size limit like on the 605 model?
the manual states that the archos 5 has a removable battery not like the 605 wifi. which is great they went back to that. the av500 was removable the 604 was also. the 605 wasn't what were they thinking? i know that i can get the battery online. i just didnt like the idea of opening it up and soldering a new one is not that i can't do it.
Don't get the Archos 5 if you plan on using the Internet at a place that doesn't have an open connection. Archos has been aware of this problem for a long time (this was exactly the same problem with the generation 5 series-I have read more than a couple of reviews of people complaining about this) and they still haven't addressed it. This makes my Arhcos 5 pretty useless to me. The whole reason I bought it was to use the Internet when I was on the road. It does not work with Barnes & Noble, Starbucks or McDonalds. Not even if you are willing to pay! The minute you try and enter your information, it spits you out of the entry screen and refreshes the page. Extremely annoying! I have tested it at all three locations and thought I must be doing something wrong. I wasn't. It just doesn't work! This is really bad in my opinion. They never mention anywhere on their website that the Internet access they provide is extremely limited!! I would have never bought it if I knew this. Now I am stuck with a pretty $350 dollar mp3 player. Oh yeah, I can look though my photos too and watch videos too! That's gonna get real old fast. I don't care how pretty the screen is. The main feature it has over a lot of other players is its Internet capabilities. But, they won't do anyone any good if they are not accessible! I may be checking into the Ipod Touch very soon, even though I hate having such a small screen and it only having 8, 16 or 32 gig of ram! Archos starts at 60 gig!
I sent them a very stern letter letting them know how lame their Internet implementation is! Come on guys! Get it together!!! People need to use the Internet in more places than their local library and Panera bread!
I have a stupid question. =P
How come we can't purchase the Archos 7's on their website? Apparently we have to go through Amazon or something? o_O Why!
Faithful rss reader for the last two years. Never missed a read. never won. Love PMP's. Cant afford the PMP. Very sad.
This will go well in my living room.
This seems like such a cool device.
Excuse me for being a technology idiot, but I am considering the Archos 5 media tablet for a Christmas gift. What exactly does it do, and how much extra (beyond the base cost) does it cost to get it to work? And are there continuing fees? Thank you, Fred (a female)
