Open Tech selling self for $50k. That went well.
We were naturally overjoyed to see another "clone" manufacturer crop up, peddling OS X "compatibility" with none of the actual pre-installed-ness that made Psystar notable, so it's with a heavy heart that we bid adieu to Open Tech. The company has put itself up for sale, including its considerable "trade secrets," and can be yours for the low-low-price of 50 grand. Almost as bad a deal as its computers.

Yet another failure, they must have some impressive info to sell for so much.

"We were naturally overjoyed to see another "clone" manufacturer crop up..."
Somehow I get the feeling you guys are high-fiving right now more than anything else.
Dirty bastards should know better than to hurt Apple's feeling like that.
John @ Aug 25th 2008 9:23AM
Either you don't get sarcasm or you are Admiral Obvious.
zargon @ Aug 25th 2008 9:13AM
Something tells me their trade secrets may not exactly be worth what they are asking.
Yevon @ Aug 25th 2008 9:40AM
"1. Put together a mediocre computer
2. Ship it with a copy of OS X
3. ?????
4. Profit!"
a ham sandwich @ Aug 25th 2008 9:58AM
::sigh:: o anon....
kal326 @ Aug 25th 2008 9:24AM
I bet Apple puts out the 50k just to bury the info, logo, and brand forever. Hell in the long run it will probably save them in legal fees.
scott @ Aug 25th 2008 9:47AM
you're on to something...
but i think it needs more cowbell.
kjb434 @ Aug 25th 2008 10:53AM
I guess I should start a computer company that promises OS X on a PC and this abruptly say I'll sell it off and a nominal price.....Then Apple pays me.

@Patrick:
Not likely. He *might* have:
1) The names of some webhosting company that hosts his domain and webstore front.
2) Transferal of his domain name.
3) Some scattered notes about his business (that doesn't turn a profit).
4) How to get a merchant account with Ingram Micro.
If there's any warehouse, its going to be a lease that he's getting eaten alive by.
Best case scenario, you're paying $50k for the domain name iopentech.tk. From a quick Register.com check, you can get any of the following for just $35:
iopentech.net $35.00 Available Add To Cart
iopentech.org $35.00 Available Add To Cart
iopentech.info $35.00 Available Add To Cart
iopentech.biz $35.00 Available Add To Cart
yes, I know Register.com isn't a good deal compared to [whatever host company you like], but its just that easy.
Anthony @ Aug 26th 2008 11:18AM
@bobartig
only 2 out of 4 are a possibility considering the domain is a free.tk domain and the site is hosted on freewebs
farfisa @ Aug 25th 2008 9:44AM
Throw in a body in a trunk and you've got a deal!
tuaamin13 @ Aug 25th 2008 10:13AM
Jobs probably wants the owner of Psystar in said trunk.
Justin Young @ Aug 25th 2008 10:30AM
I would suggest that Steve-o's truck is a little full of the other little people he's put the boot to.
vdogg89 @ Aug 25th 2008 10:07AM
ordered!
Eckofish @ Aug 25th 2008 10:21AM
I tried looking for this on eBay but couldn't find it anywhere. Perhaps I should try looking on the US version?
Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Aug 25th 2008 10:28AM
Perhaps you should go under psychiatric evaluation if you actually want one of these.
Sam @ Aug 25th 2008 10:23AM
But what about my warranty?????????
bartoron @ Aug 25th 2008 11:26AM
People actually bought these?
joeyboy @ Aug 25th 2008 10:42AM
I think the guy behind it (and it's actually a one man show) is not completely stupid,
at least if he find's sombody more stupid...
He just sets up a quick-and-dirty website and puts on it some desktop case photos.
I don't believe he ever intended to sell anything except for the "company". The trade
secrets will be something like "I found an electronics shop around the corner, he sells
these desktop cases really cheap".
Did you read it on the opentech page: for your 50k US$ you get all that important info...
in one e-mail!
Dr Zoidberg @ Aug 25th 2008 11:23AM
$50,000 , that's almost as cheap as downloading the FREE software.
ethana2 @ Aug 25th 2008 1:47PM
Kalyway or JaS?
lanejasper69 @ Aug 25th 2008 11:50AM
Pwned!
LMAO, hahahahahaahah SHUTDOWN!
Serial 8-Ball Mouse @ Aug 25th 2008 1:40PM
A shitty startup went out of business. Not THAT funny, man. Really.
Lee @ Aug 25th 2008 11:49AM
Oooh. They accept PayPal!
I'll bet the trade secrets include a document titled "How to make $50,000 without doing a damn thing."
Anders @ Aug 25th 2008 12:40PM
ROFL !!! That goes for the most right-on-target comment this week (yea only monday) *S*
JD @ Aug 25th 2008 12:40PM
Hmmm. Sounds like another Gray Rothkopf endeavor gone bad. But don't they all?

I don't understand why anyone wants the hassle of building cloned macs anyway
biohazard @ Aug 25th 2008 3:50PM
i know what you mean... osx is rubbish anyway!
Chris @ Aug 25th 2008 3:42PM
A Pentium D, they must not have updated their site in at least 2 years
Cal @ Aug 25th 2008 4:22PM
For the $50k you'll get plenty of press and exposure though
techieninja @ Aug 25th 2008 6:41PM
Look like junk...not surprised they are selling....
Harrison @ Aug 25th 2008 10:27PM
Who would buy this for 50K? The only thing worth buying would be the Mac OSX "hack" that's not really a hack at all - I can find on t3h interwebz. You could probably build a better PC for about 1/25th the money. And it would run all the operating systems you can think of.
Fredley Whimson-Pompley @ Aug 26th 2008 5:12AM
Why do you twits peddle this shit? It's a crummy website on free hosting with a free domain. Yeah, the moron is joking about selling it. Why the hell even give him the traffic? Jesus christ, it's just some moron sitting at his bloody computer. Bullshit sites like these are a dime a dozen, just do a Google for free energy plans.
