PwnageTool 2.0.3 released, jailbreaks iPhone 2.0.2
Still no baseband unlock, but if you've been dying to feel the marginal improvements of iPhone OS 2.0.2 while still rocking those crazy homebrew apps, the Dev Team has come through again with PwnageTool 2.0.3. A new Windows version of the QuickPwn tool is also out, with a Mac version to follow within the week -- you know the drill, if you're brave enough to update let us know how it goes in comments.[Thanks, David]

Who said it couldn't be hacked?

I was about to read that post that replied to cheater912 but then I saw 'clak' so instead of reading it I just hit the Low Rank button
cheater912 @ Aug 26th 2008 12:14AM
What's wrong with clak? lol
imacmatt09 @ Aug 26th 2008 12:23AM
He is a apple fantard. He usually posts random shit about apple on posts that have nothing to do with apple. He makes us mac users look bad.

Could someone explain how lay users can use this to unlock their iphones?
brandon @ Aug 26th 2008 1:01AM
Already did this two days ago, and writing this from my pwned iPod touch on 2.0.2 (Teabags Apple) :P

boomshakalaka @ Aug 26th 2008 12:10AM
Stupid slow comment system clak beat me to the thread
Familyguyrokz @ Aug 26th 2008 12:17AM
Impressive, but I still can't get over how incredibly stupid that name is. Are the creators 12 or something?
imacmatt09 @ Aug 26th 2008 12:32AM
How old are you? 40 and still living in our mothers basement?
Terc @ Aug 26th 2008 6:10AM
@imacmatt09
oooh... buuuurn.
Ok, but honestly, PwnageTool was a cool name when it was unreleased, I think they could have come up with something a little more mature for a release name. But hey, as long as they keep enjoying what they're doing and keep it free, it's all gravy to me.
iRobot @ Aug 26th 2008 12:21AM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Owned!
...and that's what you get for locking it to f__king AT&T in the first place --- APPLE! Now, can "we" get back to being a COMPUTER COMPANY and not a f__king phone company? Hmmmm...you think?
Jesse @ Aug 26th 2008 12:24AM
I hacked my iphone like 3 weeks ago, I don’t want to upgrad now because I don’t want my apps and by boot-up screen to be taken away. O and I have At&t and I think that everyone should hack this phone, it’s fee cool apps!!!
O yea and to engadget I think apple is coming out with a new ipod because all the ipods classic and nano are 20% at best buy.

you too? we should start a fan-club-thread. Right here. RIght now.
Bryan @ Aug 26th 2008 12:27AM
if you are having problems with passwords,
install Open SSH
using terminal ssh into the phone by typing
"ssh root@your_iphones_ip"
and when is asks for the password enter alpine
then type "chmod 777 /var/Keychains"
and reboot the iphone
it should work ok after that
hope this helps some.
Julian @ Aug 26th 2008 6:59AM
Thanks Bryan!!!! that helped my a lot!!
I'm still having some problems with exchange though. Now the password is remembered but i'm asked to set a pin. No matter what i type, it's invalid.

Jamie @ Aug 26th 2008 3:05AM
Thanks Bryan. After pwnage, my iPhone 3g/2.0.2 kept forgetting my wi-fi and email passwords.
Terc @ Aug 26th 2008 6:13AM
777?! really? you can't have even slightly locked down passwords? how about 770? or at least 775?
lanejasper69 @ Aug 26th 2008 12:10PM
@ Brian, does this mean the annoying WIFI password etc. that the iPhone isn't "remembering"
Anyone? Other than that Pwnage worked great and things for me SEEM a little snappier, we'll see....I thin it'a the 3G network personally, there are several debates about it, but it's okay for me.
TachyonC @ Aug 26th 2008 10:53PM
Apparently its not just permissions that were horked on /private/var/Keychains. It seems that I can't set a passcode on the device with the 2.0.2-pwn firmware. I looked at the com.apple.springboard perms and that seems OK, but the botched perms may be more prevalent. The passcode lock is enforced by my Exchange server and usually that's in a different place (EAS policy) and I forget where its stored ATM. Eventually someone will isolate and fix, but since we're in the middle of a project LOL no time!
Cheers,
TC

Updated two iPhone v1's. No problem with the upgrades except for a few app store PAID apps saying they aren't valid when I went to re-sync them.
I don't notice any difference on the iPhone V1's... Maybe my address book is a little faster to load, but that's it...
DJ MoRice @ Aug 26th 2008 1:01AM
Does this actually unlock the 1st gen iPhone? I know the 3G hasn't been totally unlocked yet. Just wanted to confirm
Delthi @ Aug 26th 2008 1:51AM
Jailbroke my iPod Touch easily with QuickPwn not too long ago. Cydia crashes occasionally, but the jailbreak is otherwise stable. 2.0.2 is anything but, unfortunately; I'm getting such massive lag when typing that it is pretty much impossible to even send an email. It's extremely frustrating.
Jamie @ Aug 26th 2008 4:01AM
I would say go back to 1.1.4 or 1.1.5 that's what I'm doing as i type. Every time i restore to 2.0 or 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 my apps never open and i lose all my music and videos but no photos.
Michael @ Aug 26th 2008 5:42AM
i found that if you press the home button then re-launch the app that the keyboard works again. i find that when you switch from app to app without going back to your springboard that it can sometimes cause the 'slow keyboard'. Hope cupertino come up with something fast.
anyone know whether there'll be iTunes 8.0 and a new update on the 9th? - Turn by turn GPS - Copy paste perhaps??
Matthew @ Aug 26th 2008 2:01AM
The last one bricked my iPhone 3 times and I gave up, but this one seems to be working. So YAY!
nikster @ Aug 26th 2008 7:50PM
bricked means rendered inoperable on a permanent basis, i.e. functionally equivalent to a brick.
hence, you can only brick a phone once.
Dubpluris @ Aug 26th 2008 3:29AM
After considering jailbreaking my phone for a long time due to lack of confidence in my ability to do it succesfully, I finally took the plunge. Even for a lay person like myself it was easy and I didn't have any problems. So I guess that's a reccomendation.
Nuage @ Aug 26th 2008 4:03AM
I'm using iphone 2.0 (2G) jailbroken, could someone link me to something rather simple that would help me unlock it? These pwn things confuse me a little.
Commuto @ Aug 26th 2008 4:26AM
Work from the dev team is outstanding.
However I can only stress a bit more on the SENSIBLE Upgrade with PwnageTool 2.0.3 (for firmware 2.0.2).
I did my first attempt at jailbreaking and everything went fine within an hour. I got back all my data/apps however I've NO MORE ACCESS to my carrier's network.
I'm in France with Orange network (i.e. "official", no unlock). Device is 3G 16GB. Everything works well under WiFi (Cydia is awesome) but... I'm barely stuck with an "iPod touch" at present (!)
( ' pleased to help if needed )
Michael @ Aug 26th 2008 5:46AM
i have EXACLY the same problem down under. Im on optus and everything worked fine until i relised that there was no Network coverage. I'll give it ago but im glad that someone else has the same problem. try restoring from a backup. that seemed to fix it after a number of attempts.
michael @ Aug 26th 2008 7:06AM
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IT SELECT EXPERT MODE THEN > GENERAL > UNCHECK ACTIVATE & CONTINUE AS NORMAL. WHEN DONE LET ITUNES ACTIVATE IT FOR YOU AND IT SHOULD OPEN IT UP TO YOUR CARRIER
Commuto @ Aug 26th 2008 6:28PM
answer below DID solve the issue!
When building new firmware, select Expert mode and UNcheck "Activate iPhone". Next proceed through the whole process and eventually the device will ask to use iTunes to activate itself.
I've back the network coverage. Thanks a lot and sorry for the inconsistent warning (great work!)
nikster @ Aug 26th 2008 7:57PM
From an interaction designer's perspective, the Pwnage tool is not as easy as you would like it to be. It works well, but it has minor pitfalls and niggles. Mine didn't find the firmware, so I had to go in advanced mode to look for it.
It's clear that the dev team lacks a guy like Zibri who can condense it all down to one large "unlock" button that does it all. Just like ZiPhone did. Interaction design is not easy, and good interaction design is hard.
That said, the Pwnage tool worked brilliantly for my 1st gen iPhone. I was still on 1.1.4 when I installed an app that killed my ability to phone out, and the Pwnage tool + 2.0.1 firmware saved me, so thank you, thank you, thank you dev team.
sprintrjm @ Aug 26th 2008 4:49AM
just pwned my 3g 2.0.2
it was easy, with no problems.
I was a 3g newb, now im post newb.
now im a pwn newb.
Brandon @ Aug 26th 2008 7:02AM
I can't get my damned iPod touch on 2.0.2 to jailbreak. I guess I should wait for Zipjone or something...
Julian @ Aug 26th 2008 7:04AM
Exchange problem solved!
1) restore with original (unmodded) 2.0.2 ipsw
2) use QuickPwn150 to jailbreak/unlock
3) reconfigure
I think that there is something not working perfect on the pwntool 2.0.3 firmware creation process.

what's the point of jailbreaking a phone?
