Well, they're here.
Nokia's latest and greatest N-series devices just hit the market like a trio of well-aimed bricks -- or at least that's what Nokia's hoping. We got to spend a little bit of hands-on time with prototypes of the new devices, and while we came away slightly impressed, we were nowhere near E-series impressed. Here's our biggest problem with the lineup: the only one worth talking about is the
N85. Other than minor screen size disparities, the 16GB built-in memory of the
N96 and the fresh candybar form of the
N79, these three phones are pretty much exactly identical on specs, and yet the N96 manages to be inexcusably bulky, while the N79 sports an inexcusably terrible screen -- we're hoping that was just the prototype being funky, but we saw two versions with the same problem. The N85 isn't exactly the pinnacle of thinphoneness, but its amazing OLED screen and more refined design make the N96 look like more of a rough draft than a sibling. On the interface side, the phones are much more responsive to S60's new motion and transitions, but Nokia has oddly chosen to disable the Navi Wheel scrolling in all three phones -- a weird move, but we can't say we blame them, we haven't had a single good experience with Navi Wheel since Nokia introduced it. In all, we're not exactly thrilled about Nokia's prospects for winning over the masses with this new series of devices. Sure, Nokia will protest that it's going after the high-end users, but 5 megapixel cameras, GPS and WiFi are no longer the differentiators they once were, and users have begun to expect thinner, sexier devices at prices far below the N96's gargantuan $895 pricetag.
Nokia only good when there is no data on its memory
it run fast as long you dont have any data
so smart phone become dumb phone when it has to remember something eh....
I dont really understand this bashing. I agree with many here that N85 wont be the greatest phone out there as that place will be taken by INNOV8, but N85 is really competitive compared to other phones with as good spec as N85.
I see no reason why wouldnt N85 be best seller in Europe and Asia. N85 AMOLED screen is biggest in any mobile phone out there currently and the specs are great(got one of the best if not the best 5mpx module in it) and rather slimm packet when thinking the spec.
E71 seem to over sell everything in the market currently, but i wouldnt say that the camera or other spec of it is anything out of this world.
I cant see INNOV8 to sell anything close to as much as N95 or N85 or N79.
When it comes to N96... that's as useless phone as phone can be.
couldnt help notice the N00 logo on the N85
I am so glad I bought the HTC Touch Pro over this... the N96 looks like a N95 with more space. Let's face it, DVB-H is only in trials in a few places, quite a few carriers will disable it, it MAY have a slightly better camera than it's 2 year old predeccessor, and a touch extra RAM... this is their flagship phone?
I just hope I don't regret my purchase when the Xperia comes out. The N96 is not a high end phone. A year ago, mayby, but not this late in the game.
Aaaaaaah, the joys of being in the UK and carrier subsidy. I know I won't be paying the equivalent to $895 for my next phone. It's going to be one of these or the i8510/INNOV8. I've had an N95 and an N82 recently, and I'm not stepping away from S60 for anything at the mo.
Don't drop your iPhone because the screen may break. And don't drop your N96 as it may break your leg if it hits. :))))
People can't put in their back pockets because the screen breaks. People can't put their N96 in their backpockets because it doesn't fit. Of course in case you don't have a hip hop skater jean. :))))
Still I would like to see my battery from time to time. So N85 rocks!!!
One thing I like about N series phones vs other phones are that N series phones are nearly flawless feature wise. Some of them may have had design flaws, but they do everything they were meant to do and they do it well. Nokia may not have an 8mp camera phone or a touch screen phone, but they're trying to play it safe. 8mp phones are really thick and no touch screen phone has been as responsive as the iphone yet. I do have to admit they need to stop repackaging the same phone, but the n85 is perfect for me.
My contract has ended and i am looking for a new phone. i am interested in the N96 but after reading a few things not to sure. Anyone recommend something for me. mainly after internet usuage and ability to pick up work emails!!!
Need help
Nokia N-series phones are widely known for being rather beastly affairs, with big bodies housing features that make the iPhone 3G look like an £8 Alcatel mobile. But the N79, one of two new high-end cells from the Nokia stable, looks and feels like a solid but unspectacular candy bar from lower down Nok’s extensive range.
