CE-Oh no he didn't! Part LVIII: NVIDIA CEO doesn't know what Larrabee is, doesn't care
by Richard Lawler, posted Aug 27th 2008 at 3:22PM

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang just can't resist throwing more jabs at Intel, distracting the inaugural
NVISION crowd from Battlestar Galactica star Tricia Helfer with the claim that "
Larrabee hasn't shipped so you don't know what it is and I don't know what it is." The fact that we do know what it is -- a next-gen hybrid CPU / GPU -- shouldn't be a concern according to Huang, because "By the time it does ship, Nvidia's technology will be so far advanced it won't matter." Besides stuffing Usain Bolt-type speed into a GPU the company will keep busy working on its WinMo smartphone hardware, and software for the not-exactly-Atom-killing VIA Nano, but forget about that rumored x86-compatible hardware 'cuz, as Jen-Hsun reminds us, "the Internet doesn't run on x86." For a company that lacks innovation, is "a joke," and at least four years behind, Intel must be doing something right, because the competition can't keep its name out of their mouths.Filed under: Desktops, Laptops

I thought for a second that your avatar was Eeyore.
But I see the Kim Jong Il and don't know that I still see the Eeyore...

The mint looks soooo refreshing, can i have one please?

Thats a bit of intel poo, pressed into a bar of chocolate.

What's with all the Haterade?
Is Intel really getting serious about GPU's? I haven't seen any sort of GPU action from them....nothing more than on board video.
If Intel decides to get into the high end GPU space, they're going to put a hurting on Nvidia.
tom @ Aug 27th 2008 3:37PM
It is his strategy of creating a diversion to the general public, so everyone will forget to ask the NV GPU overheating issue
kjb434 @ Aug 27th 2008 4:01PM
Imagine if intel boards had powerful graphics as video boards do now? Sure, the motherboard will cost more, but there will be some savings in the two being together.
indeed @ Aug 27th 2008 4:41PM
Because Intel is making a potentially powerful and flexible graphics card, that makes itchy.
Maybe it won't be competing with the Nvidia's and ATI's highend cards in the beginning, but I'm sure they won't give up trying. They have the resources to do so.
Mam00th @ Aug 27th 2008 5:05PM
Just because NVIDIA CEO can't stop being such a bitch, I really hope that Larabee kick the shit out of whatever NVIDIA product will be out at this time.
On another note, is it nVidia, Nvidia or NVIDIA?
eggothewaffle @ Aug 27th 2008 3:35PM
Less Intel bashing, more Tegra demos!
JerryA @ Aug 27th 2008 5:17PM
Seriously. Bringing that kind of power to the mobile world is way more interesting/exciting to me than the other stuff. Maybe because my desktop/notebook experience is already pretty kickass but the mobile world is ready to get bumped up a notch.

"distracting the inaugural NVISION crowd from Battlestar Galactica star Tricia Helfer with the claim that "Larrabee hasn't shipped so you don't know what it is and I don't know what it is."
Oh come on! Helfer is NOT that boring! Was that really all it took to distract them?!

iEye @ Aug 27th 2008 3:38PM
mmm... Larrabee goes down smooth...
Kris @ Aug 27th 2008 3:40PM
NVidia is fighting an up-hill battle. They forget the reason why dedicated video cards came about: the CPU couldn't handle all the computations. Eventually, as we progress, the GPU and CPU will merge once again.
Charles @ Aug 27th 2008 6:04PM
Possibly, but then there's also moves by both nVidia and AMD/ATI to make a general purpose GPU. The GPU has vastly more number crunching power than the CPU (as the likes of folding@home has demonstrated) so it could equally be the CPU that becomes irrelevant. With Intel, AMD/ATI and nVidia heading in different directions it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
Kris @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:06PM
Charles, do you know what a CPU is? It's a Central Processing Unit. Regardless of whether an existing CPU architecture takes over or a new GPU, it'll _still_ be a CPU.
Joe @ Aug 27th 2008 3:48PM
Who again ships the most vid ics? Oh yeah, that's Intel.
aquatsr @ Aug 27th 2008 3:49PM
You know Intel is doing something right when the competition gets pissed off (question: from fear, or ignorance?). nVidia should spend less time bashing and more time thinking so that they can dig themselves out of their ever-expanding hole.
grue @ Aug 27th 2008 3:52PM
RIDDLE: What kind of bees make the best milk?
(Hint: they're not Larrabees!)

Yes, Sam, that kind.

"Intel must be doing something right, because the competition can't keep its name out of their mouths."
I agree.
gerrrg @ Aug 27th 2008 4:08PM
Oh no he didn't!
LOL...that man just doesn't know what humble pie is. Either that or he's looking for the Hungry Man portion of humble pie.
Arthur @ Aug 27th 2008 4:13PM
I don't know about anyone else, but that nVidia CEO is really starting to annoy me.
With all that arrogance you would think they would at least know how to produce GPUs that don't fail massively due to cheap materials (the heating/cooling issue).
Jeffrey Lin @ Aug 27th 2008 4:19PM
heh Arthur...the stock market seems to second that opinion: http://suckingless.com/tag/nvda/
Jon Doe. @ Aug 27th 2008 4:23PM
Hey Nvidia. How are those burnt out GPU's? I said it before and I will say it again. Nvidia should clean up their own shit before they start flinging it.
Ed @ Aug 27th 2008 4:26PM
what an ass. On the other hand, Intel's track record for performance graphics hardware isn't exactly spectacular.
indeed @ Aug 27th 2008 4:36PM
Hahaha I'm betting all this is because they refused to sell them an x86 license
Plus, if Nvidia doesn't know or care about Larrabee why are they saying it'll perform like an 2006 graphics card?
Nvidia are acting like such crybabies lately, I don't remember them being this way
esecasco @ Aug 27th 2008 4:37PM
Hey Nvidia!
Money Talks, bullshit walks :
http://finance.google.com/finance?q=Nvidia
from $35 bucks to $13 in the span of a year..and it all started with the burnt out GPU fiasco.
I've never had an Intel chip die, but now I can say I have had an Nvidia GPU die on me.
lukas88 @ Aug 27th 2008 4:38PM
If this becomes the next standard for integrated graphics (basically, if it is cheap), nVidia will see a huge chunk of sales float away. Most PC gamers have no other option but to buy a 3D card, and most rely on nVidia. Intel doesn't have to satisfy the performance geeks (ahem, I am one), they just have to satisfy the other 99% of computer users who just want to view high resolution porn and play an online FPS a few times a week at a moderate resolution.
Telanis @ Aug 27th 2008 4:40PM
NVidia sucks so hard nowadays. ATI's not doing anything exciting either, but at least they have quality stuff.
Intel + ATI > AMD + NVidia
I do wish 3DFX would rise from the grave and feed on their brains, though.
lukas88 @ Aug 27th 2008 4:46PM
you do know that ATI is owned by AMD now? It just makes your pairings a little awkward.
Ytril @ Aug 27th 2008 4:54PM
AMD owns ATI. So your comparing ATI to AMD is pointless. It is like comparing your hand to your arm.
phanbouy @ Aug 27th 2008 5:10PM
Telanis is more human than human
Malfoy Roark @ Aug 27th 2008 5:19PM
Also know that 3dfx and all its tech is owned by Nvidia so there will be no GLIDE rising from the grave unfortunately.
maxz @ Aug 27th 2008 5:11PM
Just remember it is in our best interest for Larrabee to be as good as possible.
Bodd @ Aug 27th 2008 5:13PM
That Nvidia fucker is a shoe!

Hey, Nvidia? When Intel starts creating chipsets for YOUR exceedingly popular CPUs, let me know. Until then, it's the other way around still, ain't it?
