Eyes-on with LG's NB41 Blu-ray NAS

Sure, it's just network attached storage, but somehow, someway, LG's dressed its NB41 Blu-ray burnin'' NAS with just enough sex, just enough appeal to coax this helpless editor into risking security's ire just to grab a few pre-IFA snaps. It's bigger than we expected -- mini-tower PC big -- but we guess those four 1TB disks need plenty of ventilation. Just check that reflection in the mirror for a sense of scale.

Looks good but will it hold up against this beast? -> http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665231960
I say no. But it probably will have a better price point.
why are the specs less on that one/?
that's not even the same thing -- this is a NAS, for backup, it backs up your computer to it's harddrives, then burns the data onto Bluray disks for hardcopy off-site storage; what you linked is a home entertainment computer. a very overpriced and near useless home entertainment computer at that.
Uber Comparo-Failage!
does it grate cheese?
this seems like a really good idea for small buisness
In b4 MacPro rip off
well, there is a giant "X" reflecting off the case.
coincidence? hmmmm???????
wow.. i guess the evening crowd had a bad day at work
"wahhh mommy! he noticed the x-shaped reflective thing and therefore loves apple well i hate them and will now commence pants pissing!"
Damn this is nice! One question, HOW much $$$ to play?
My guess $999 to $1500
Also does will work with ?
does you ever shut up?
@ Brian, thanks for the link:) The 200 BR disks is nice but only 500GB? That's not going to help many "BR Backup images" LOL
And for $3500, no way.
What an awesome looking but pointless piece of hardware.Blu-Ray will be the last popular Optical Medium. HDD technology has just come on leaps and bounds. You can grab a 500GB HDD for the same price now as a few blu-ray drives. What you really want to do for NAS is grab an older-ish PC (something like a P4-P3 system), stick on FreeNAS (or another linux distro if you prefer like me XP) and just load the fucker with 500GB HDD's and PCI SATA cards. Its so much more flexible.
Although more to the point, I would love to see that chassis released as a full size PC case. I know its a rip off of the mac pro but i personally think its an improvement. Id snap that up as quick as a journalist can say "GARY GLITTER!"
blu ray discs should have better longevity than the drives, especially if you leave them spinning all the time.

your poll is flawed. what if we were to agree but thought you were a douche?
Oh my, what a pretty thing it is, I want :)
This may be a stupid question, but what does IFA stand for?
Who knows... :p

My HP MediaSmart WHS has 4 1TB drives in it ... and that thing is barely bigger than the drives it contains. That LG thing looks like a brute!
This may help good sir.

Sorry this was meant for Billy Jobs up there, It would also appear I need a 'helping hand' in replying to a comment.
Thanks!
"N/W storage"?
No built-in bluetooth? WTH? Even TVs have it built-in these days.
You had me at "sex".
Bring on more of these!
I would never use optical media for anysort of important backup. Ever. It is far too unrealiable, and I don't see how a blu version will change this.
For off site storage, how about a 1TB External Hard Drive. I bet it would be smaller than the equivilent 20 odd bluray discs in cases as well.
Other than maybe for movies, computer storage is starting to move away for optical media, and as far as I'm concerned, good ridance.
Meh.
So who is this aimed at anyway? High Usage end-users or what?
