That's funny, I actually use an older nano for my on-the-go music player even though I have the iphone. It's nice because I use an iskin lanyard with it, makes the controls easy to reach while working, at the gym, on the plane, whatever. Easier than digging the iphone out of my pocket, and the iphone is too heavy to comfortably use around your neck. Not to mention the @#$@ first-gen iphone recessed headphone jack which would definitely break my headphone adapter if I used it while in a pocket.
Though I have zero need for any kind of ipod dock, so your question still stands...
