Newsflash, Samsung: your (
previously rumored) new X360 laptop isn't actually lighter than air. Also newsflash: it's still pretty special. Samsung shouted a resounding "me too!" today with its new X360 13.3-inch ultraslim / ultralight / ultraportable laptop. Weighing in at 2.8 pounds and measuring as thin as 0.66-inches (1.2-inches on the fatter end), the laptop is based on a Centrino 2 ULV processor and is built to compete. 1GB of RAM is standard -- there's room for up to 4GB -- and you can pick a 64GB or 128GB SSD, or opt for a 5400RPM 120GB HDD if you're feeling boring. Graphics come from X4500 integrated graphics, and the screen runs at 1280 x 800. The best and worst news comes with the inputs and outputs; Samsung didn't integrate an optical drive, but did find room for a 7-in-1 card reader, three USB ports, PCI ExpressCard/34, HDMI, VGA, LAN and a docking port. There's naturally WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR and a 1.3 megapixel camera. Battery life is specced at 6 to 10 hours, but we're guessing the upper end of that spectrum will add considerably to the weight. No word on price or availability, but as far as we know Samsung hasn't gone backsies on its "no computers for those dirty Americans" policy, so it looks like we're stuck with the other dozen or so similarly specced laptops out there.
"specced"
is that right?
It is named like a Microsoft product, it looks like an Apple product, how much more uninspired this could be?
it is faaar from looking like Apple product. it is black, not streamline, fancy cover. what chu talking about?
eh u fukin dick head of of course its not lighter than air wat did u expect it to float around ur clearly a jokier and problem sit in ur room on the pc whiles ur 30 without a job so shut the fuk up and get a life
That is _exactly_ the ultra-portable laptop I've been looking for. Too bad it's going to be like $2000.
yes! just give us something cheap.... eee?
but that wouldn't be the case as selling higher price will give more profit per unit sold.
*Waits for uninformed Apple fanboys to compare keyboard to the MBA*
What do you mean Apple Fanboys? The keyboard is obviously copied from SOny! :)

I know, hence why I used the word 'uninformed'.

'nuff said
Not that I think it's wrong for other companies to be using the same design - just pointing out that it wasn't Apple who did it first!
"Newsflash, Samsung: your (previously rumored) new X360 laptop isn't actually lighter than air."
I think they meant it's lighter than the Macbook Air which weighs in at 3lbs vs. the X360 at 2.8lbs.
I think you got it right. It is a way of saying it without really saying it. If that makes sense.
Too bad it has a plastic case - that is one thing the MBA has that it doesn't have (which probably is responsible for the extra .2lbs). However, the added ports are a big plus. Looks to be a nice addition to the market of quasi-ultraportables.
Exactly. I was about to post the same thing. Silly engadget needs to woot more to recognize plays on words better!
Wait you want engadget to invest MORE time and effort into wordplay? Oh hell no!
Wow, That looks like a beautiful laptop.
It is so beautiful. So many beautiful laptops. I wish I could have them all at once.
it's pretty indeed.. kinda reminds me of the sony vaio tz series notebooks.. :)
What company in their right mind would name a product "X360" after the most unreliable piece of junk ever known to mankind?????
I think you're in the wrong place my friend... Move along.
Call me an idiot, but I didn't make the connection. Perhaps they figured few other people would, either -- and of those people, almost nobody would pass on a completely different product for having a similar name.
Now, which ad standards agency will take Samsung to task for 'lighter than air'? :)
Damn, that's really difficult, because you're *nix user, and I really respect that about you, but...um...here goes....
idiot.
Hey that wasn't so bad actually. I think I kind of liked it.
Looks very nice! Screen's probably LED-backlit too (anything else would be major fail on this anyway).
1GB standard? How generous of Samsung, welcome to year 2006.
Ye, Laptop RAM is pretty cheap. All DDR2 is atm.
Hang on..... is it DDR3 maybe?
I can grab 4GB of laptop DDR2 for £60.
but then they can't gouge you with the biggest rip off scam in the industry -- RAM upgrades
What about the other big rip off, making you pay loads more for an extra 0.2GHz clock speed...
No Cal, you're paying more because it's black, it's shiny, and it's HAHWT!
This is really nice. Kicks the Air's ass. Other than the fact it runs OSX, i would have bought an air just to run bootcamp but this is just so nice. I just hope we dont get another report from engadget in 20 minutes informing that samsung have stooped to the level of making a netbook. :(
That would suck.
"I just hope we dont get another report from engadget in 20 minutes informing that samsung have stooped to the level of making a netbook".
Why? Because only the wealthy should have ultra-portable notebooks?
"Kicks the Air's ass."
Is that anything like shadowboxing?
This is a pretty nice compromise in terms of size vs. features, the only question is the price.
I think Apple could go for something along these lines IF they ever want to do a 13" MacBook Pro.
Samsung makes laptops?
eminemdrdre00 makes dumb comments???
Lack of optical drive is called 'worst' by engadget in regards to a non-apple product, but when the macbook air was released it was purposely overlooked much as possible as 'worst'
Ridiculous.
1.2 inches thick does not make be drool
no optical drive - makes me throw up
Hey ward, ask the beave to show ya how to use USB, buddy!
I once owned a Samsung laptop, and it was the best computer I've ever owned
- An ugly american typing on a MBP
Well who needs optical drive anyways??? Seriously, I used it maybe twice in past 2 years
Samsung Xbox 360?
Crappy name. Let's go with "Samsung Hydrogen" or if you're afraid of naming your laptop after an exploding gas, maybe "Samsung Helium". Then they could really stick it to the Air.
Came to comment on the stupid name as well. What were they thinking?
Too bad this "lighter than air" laptop is weighed down by heavy bloated software [Vista].
Too bad your comment is weighed down by uninformed FUD.
Woah, Matt! He didn't say Vista is completely malfunctional or hopelessly virus-prone or doesn't work with any peripherals. He just said it's bloated.
A lot of that other stuff has been fixed, but not by making it less bloated. FUD that is not.
Yes, but does it cut cake?
Yes, but only when the Cake is True - and as we all know, the Cake is a Lie.
And the cock crows twice on Sunday.
Looks ripe for fingerprints and glare.
