Epson rolls out all-in-one EH-DM2 projector

While we can't say we've ever felt the need for a projector with a built-in DVD player and a built-in "surround sound" system, Epson seems to think there's at least some folks that want a big box of compromises, and it's hoping its new EH-DM2 projector will be to their liking. This one's a 3LCD projector, and boasts an "HD compatible" resolution and an adequate 1,200 lumens of brightness, along with a few non-standard features like a USB port to let you view photos, DiVX compatibility from the built-in DVD player and, of course, those built-in 8W speakers that somehow promise to surround you with sound. Not exactly for everyone, to be sure, but the €600 price tag (or just under $900) is certainly reasonable enough, and it'll apparently be available as soon as next month.

"HD compatible"
lol
Sounds terrible.
They need to concentrate in making the best projector at the most affordable price. Just leave enough plugs to let the customers hook up all they crap they want to. I don't want/need a dvd player and/or speakers inside my projector. I'll take care of that. Just give me a projector with good resolution at a great price.
While this seems too much, I do welcome the idea of having projector and some kind of storage into one device.
Imagine a presentation when you brink your laptop, projector, with cables all over, etc
A small and portable projector, with built in USB port for flash reader and remote control would be a winner to me.
I would just grab a wind or eee to go with the projector, its only a VGA cable.
From the looks of it, it is also a printer.
its sticking its tongue out at us.
That thing is HUUGE! How much does it weight?
That's what she said.
@ dawgero
HUUGE! FAIL!
The phrase "big box of compromises" just made my day. Thank you, sir. :)
While I would never put this thing in my house, think about how perfect that would be for schools. Perhaps that's their target demographic?
For $1k? I highly doubt it. At least not here in the US, with the amount of funding (lack thereof) our schools get. There are plenty of significantly cheaper alternatives in a computer|projector combo.
it's the new epson all in one, printer/fax/scanner/copier/projector/dvd/cd combo including surround sound and optional sun roof.
It's for tailgate parties, of course. No wait, then you'd use your car's sound system. It's for eco-friendly bicycle tailgate parties? No, needs power...
I got it. It's for getting hassled at airport security.
All in one units never end up that good. Just ask ATI.
I think a lot of people here are missing the point. There are lots of uses for this "big box of compromises". Your permanent home theater is just not one of them. Think - presentation, school classrooms, backyard parties, dorm rooms, lan parties, and ...errm, home movies.
I think we get the point.
The unfortunate bit about this is that it is only practical to spend so much on this all-in-one product if you have nothing else in place. I'm not sure that anyone/school/Epson employee would fork out $900 for something that would replace 75% of what they already have only to gain a projector because if you (they) have $900+ to spend on such a thing then you more than likely already have everything but the projector.
So I think this is better geared towards the "I have nussing" or the "I know nussing" demographics.
Saw this demoed in Amsterdam at a trade fair earlier this year. This is indeed targeted at schools. Looked pretty rugged and there was a security system to help prevent theft.
This is the MovieMate 55 announced under a different name in a different country. Price here is $699.
This is just the MovieMate 55 announced in a different country under a different name. Price is $699 here if I remember correctly. Great unit for what it's designed for. Simple, light (8.3 pounds) all-in-one family DVD movie projector that plays music and DivX video, even from a USB flash drive.
is there some rule that spammers can't put together a single sentence?
