Sony introduces PMX-U55 PMP for China

As we've seen, Sony sure doesn't hold back on its exclusive-to-China line of PMX PMPs, and it's just tossed yet another new model into the mix, with the PMX-U55 helping to fill out the low-end of the spectrum (and pick up where the PMX-U50 left off). This one apparently comes in only a 2GB version, and packs a decent enough 2.4-inch 320 x 240 display, a built-in FM tuner, and support for all the usual audio and video formats, not to mention a 7.5mm slim form factor. Of course, like seemingly every other entry in the line, there's no word of a release outside of China, but those there can apparently pick one up right now for 498 Chinese yuan, or just over $70.

People in China buy Japanese-made stuff again? At least there's progress...
Jamar @ Aug 30th 2008 11:33AM
Heck yeah they do! Especially cellphones. Too much crap in the Chinese market. Why pay out the wazoo for a Nokia N95 when you can get a SO905iCS (CS stands for CyberShot- 5MP, optical zoom and all- Sony Ericsson is much nicer in Japan than elsewhere) for half the price (or less)?
Jamar @ Aug 30th 2008 11:34AM
And don't forget media players too. Yes, people will pay more for something that lasts longer than a year.
Jamar @ Aug 30th 2008 11:35AM
And most people have gotten over the events of long ago anyhow. (that, or they recognize just how crappy their electronics can be sometimes...)
Jamar @ Aug 30th 2008 11:37AM
It would be nice if my comments worked.
pharmboy @ Aug 29th 2008 3:34PM
This thing probably wouldn't stand a chance in our market....not with the proprietary codec/licensure issues and stiff competition...IMHO...
simon @ Aug 29th 2008 3:36PM
Is it just me or did the story say "support for all the usual audio and video formats"? What part of that statement was proprietary?
Jason @ Aug 29th 2008 6:02PM
Simon, you have to understand that in China, the usual video formats refers strictly to non-DRM, pirated, black market video.
mabhatter @ Aug 30th 2008 1:14PM
not to mention that looks like an iPod click-wheel which Apple vigorously enforces patents on anyplace else. And nearly all of the video codex supported have patents held by somebody, that device could never be sold elsewhere at that price for license issues alone.
ridahgadgetguy @ Aug 29th 2008 3:35PM
do i see a PSP like interface? :D:D it definetely is woth those 70$
chefgon_ign @ Aug 29th 2008 3:37PM
I see XMB style icons, but that is most definitely not an XMB interface.
GiF @ Aug 29th 2008 6:17PM
Do I see an iPod-like gadget?
Toadlet @ Aug 29th 2008 3:37PM
Cool, a cookbook function!
Rhino @ Aug 29th 2008 3:41PM
Most URGLY SONY I've ever seen. I can't believe this could be a sonystyle. And... Still way tooooooooo expensive for Chinese market
Knives_Out @ Aug 29th 2008 4:00PM
whoa those are ugly.
Jason @ Aug 29th 2008 6:04PM
The Sony color chart name for the one on the right is Peptoluminium.
Hellaphunt @ Aug 29th 2008 4:06PM
Damn. Another thing [not] to add to my wishlist.
StalematE @ Aug 29th 2008 4:12PM
ugly, throw it out.
RAQ @ Aug 29th 2008 5:27PM
Usual video formats? Does this include DIVX? Please say it does.
sublimewulf @ Aug 29th 2008 5:16PM
I dig the XMB
phanbouy @ Aug 29th 2008 5:54PM
don't feed spam
fred @ Aug 29th 2008 6:00PM
they never support divx. mpeg4 or h264 if like previous models. though if its price cut it might support less video i'm guessing. anyways no biggie, mediacoder/handbrake work well for encoding
TomTom2007 @ Aug 29th 2008 6:06PM
too bad you already fed it...
ah..oh... me too..... hehe...
