The HTC S740 gets handled
HTC is keeping the S740 under wraps at IFA, but the crafty folks at newmobile managed to score some time with the new QWERTY slider, and it looks pretty decent. Thinner than the Touch Pro, the keyboard is basically the same, with the same sort of stealth-look backplate as the Diamond. No motion sensor, so the display only rotates when the slide is open, but that's really all we know -- the unit wasn't running a production-ready version of Windows Mobile, so impressions are a little up in the air. My that's a long phone. It looks like the faceplate to a car stereo.
Dead_Rebel @ Aug 29th 2008 1:57PM
That's what she said.
Frankfurter @ Aug 29th 2008 2:05PM
I hate when the ladies tell me that "It looks like the faceplate to a car stereo". Darn it.
chilalx68 @ Aug 29th 2008 2:12PM
my my my I was waiting for someone to complain about this phone in someway omg either its to big to long or not big enough wy is everyone always b1tc]-[ing about something about the form factor wtf I mean none of us have even held the phone yet never the less gotten a really good look besides the screens on htc's website
phanbouy @ Aug 29th 2008 2:26PM
i was waiting for someone to type a run on sentence that confuses subject and topic while also assiduously avoiding any sort of guiding punctuation that might be able to better guide the reader to aid in the understanding of the comment that's being displayed on their computer screen at their terminal which may or may not be LCD but in either case probably at least has an energy star rating oh and also bitch is a bad word so i ironically use punctuation to mimic the letters in the word bitch because well you know the bad word police will be placated this way
konshuss @ Aug 29th 2008 2:58PM
i was expecting phanbuoy to troll, but of course pointing that out makes me a hypocrite unless you know... i mention THE ARTICLE SUBJECT.
nice phone.
OneLove @ Aug 29th 2008 4:39PM
I want my HTC touch pro now. Sprint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SimbaDogg @ Aug 29th 2008 6:28PM
phanbouy...

Edgar N, @ Aug 29th 2008 1:31PM
why are Z and Y switched around?
from switzerland @ Aug 29th 2008 2:36PM
Because it's a German keyboard
madmax @ Aug 29th 2008 1:32PM
QWERTZ? Why is the Z and the Y switched?
Sam Zebian @ Aug 29th 2008 2:51PM
Yeah but it shouldn't be too much of a problem, we don't use the letter Z or Y too often. See, here's a perfectly good example of how something would be typed on this huge phone with it's keyboard-
Hello, mz name is Sam Yebian.
Oh, NM, lol jk I just wanted to see how my name would look with a Y instead of a Z.
Jim @ Aug 29th 2008 3:13PM
@Sam Zebian: "...we don't use the letter Z or Y too often."
Not counting your name change joke or direct reference; you used the letter Y 5 times in three sentences (not counting the name joke or direct reference, as said).
Yeah
perfectly
typed
keyboard
my
I would say that, yes, we do use the letter Y more often than you realize! (3 times in this sentence alone, not counting direct reference, as said).
ValleNorte @ Aug 29th 2008 5:16PM
Jim, I think he means in GERMAN the Y rarely used, hence the change...it is after all a GERMAN keyboard layout!
Jeremy K. @ Aug 29th 2008 1:36PM
I love the last sentence of the article: "Especially the last one shows how thin the device is!"
L @ Aug 29th 2008 1:36PM
Not everybody's main language is English, you know?
Y is hardly ever needed in German, that's why Z & Y are switched on German keyboards...
Freakin Ijit @ Aug 29th 2008 1:37PM
I think there's more to this than what we see.
Jason @ Aug 29th 2008 5:46PM
You think it has insides?
Ran @ Aug 29th 2008 1:37PM
Can you say too looooooong.....
Mohsin @ Aug 29th 2008 3:46PM
Thats what she said
From My Cube @ Aug 29th 2008 1:42PM
thats a badass looking phone
TareX @ Aug 29th 2008 3:42PM
It actually looks like some sort of Chinese joke. I can't see how this got it into actual production.
Jonathan Ziemer @ Aug 29th 2008 1:45PM
does it include a capacitive screen? i keep looking for specs about that and I must be loosing it. One source said it didn't but it's still unclear to me.
Phoenix @ Aug 29th 2008 3:46PM
Not Touch screen
ingus @ Aug 29th 2008 1:52PM
that is one THICK phone...
reminds me of the bygone days when the batteries were twice as thick as the phones.
carnero @ Aug 29th 2008 1:57PM
Some other quality photos are on following link: http://www.ce4you.cz/articles/detail.asp?a=321
ZSX @ Aug 29th 2008 5:30PM
Well spotted!
I am a little disappointed to see how much longer it is than the S710. However, that might not matter so much if it is also much thinnner.
StalematE @ Aug 29th 2008 1:58PM
pretty ugly... reminds me of those old audiovox phones
konshuss @ Aug 29th 2008 2:57PM
i still have my PPC6600... you want to talk about thick. but it sure plays movies beautifully on its 3.5" touchscreen....
i don't think this phone is 'beautiful' aesthetically. in fact it's rather basic. but maybe that's why i love it.
BUTTONS, BUTTONS AND MORE BUTTONS! what a novel concept, eh fanboys?
phanbouy @ Aug 29th 2008 5:06PM
"what a novel concept, eh fanboys?"
like you say, you wouldn't want to be a hypocrite by trolling, would you?
Frankfurter @ Aug 29th 2008 2:04PM
Saaaay, that's a nice looking phone......
LOL
Not really.
ivanotter @ Aug 29th 2008 2:07PM
Why can't they do this WITH touchscreen? One ting i hate about my phone is no dedicated diaplad, and there was a smartphone out there for verizon that was both (a samsung model IIRC). Had a dedicated dialpad on front, a touchscreen, and a slide out keyboard.
Sorry for all you "fat phone" commentors, but i like a phone that actually fits in my hand instead of making me feel like i am attempting to grip a 2D object. There is too large, but since the Pro and this are as thick/thinner than my Mogul, then it is NOT
MickLiq @ Aug 29th 2008 2:13PM
Nothing to see here, move on.
Thick+WM6.1 standard, why would anyone buy this over an E71? Or for that matter, a BJ II?
jtizzlefurizzle21 @ Aug 29th 2008 6:11PM
bj's are way to expensive in todays market
JDL @ Aug 29th 2008 2:15PM
I'm pretty such this isn't a touchscreen phone at all. That's why its got the numpad up front. Also, there's no "Touch" in the phone's name.
JDL @ Aug 29th 2008 2:16PM
Grr. this should have been a reply to Jonathan Ziemer
xchrisx @ Aug 29th 2008 2:20PM
All of these new HTC phones would look nicer with a full screen + slideout like the xperia. No need for the dial pad as long as there's touch dialer like the iPhone. This one especially is just too long. Otherwise, not a bad looking phone.
chefgon_ign @ Aug 29th 2008 3:35PM
There is no touch dialer because there is no touch screen.
Phoenix @ Aug 29th 2008 3:46PM
1) no touch screen.
2) Ever heard of the Touch Pro?
jefffaucher @ Aug 29th 2008 3:53PM
I can't tell if this thing is a big phone or a tiny netbook. Eef.
Phoenix @ Aug 29th 2008 4:10PM
It's a smartphone...
Jason @ Aug 29th 2008 5:47PM
...in Lake Woebegone.
RD. @ Aug 29th 2008 3:53PM
I need more keys on a phone. They should have replaced the screen with more keys and made it twice as long with more keys.
Jon Doe. @ Aug 29th 2008 9:56PM
Can this be the T Mobile G1...please?
David Rankine @ Aug 29th 2008 11:22PM
I would buy this if the screen was 3.3 or bigger
weareborg @ Sep 2nd 2008 1:58PM
Looks exactly like a sharp model on display at the IFA sharp booth last year. Sharp's was grey and very light & "plasticky". The only difference I see here is the black casing..
Dan Noiseux @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:31AM
It not QWERTY but QWERTZ ??? Strange don't zou think?
