HTC wars: Touch Pro, Touch Diamond and S740 go head to head

Now that the cat's out of the bag it was no trouble tracking down HTC's S740 this morning, and just for kicks we rammed the phone up against the Touch Pro, which we subsequently rammed against the Touch Diamond and an iPhone for a generally violent display of smartphone force. It is worth noting that while the S740's keys are similar to the Touch Pro's, they're not quite as deep or clicky, which leads to a rather sub-par typing experience by HTC's standards. That glossy mirror finish on the phone screens isn't doing them any favors either -- even when wiped smudge free it seems to impede viewing -- and we must say the Touch Pro's matte finish makes the Diamond and iPhone 3G look cheap in comparison. Oh, and when asked about the Dream, the HTC rep quickly replied "we don't know anything." It was worth a shot, right?

The G1 in all the mock ups looks fugly in comparison to these phones. I hope the reason IS because they are early versions. I like the designs, and the three phones cover all the combinations of keyboard you could want. BUT it’s still not the device that will get me to move off my Universal. The screens just seem small and keyboards at that size don’t look very usable. I hope they’re successful because I think HTC is a good manufacturer, maybe then they can afford to build the Omni.

If you want a phone that just does the job reliably, I cannot recommend the Nokia E71 enough. No bulky slide out keyboard, no wishy washy flashy but sluggish GUI, a snappy (fast) OS, a remarkably usable (and thoughtfully laid out) QWERTY keyboard and a few other niceties that make using the E71 a seamless integration of your business or personal lifestyle. And that is not including the sexy 10mm profile and exceptional build quality. Not to mention the battery life.

While some HTC phones (in particular their older versions) are well conceived, their attempts to emulate the iPhone have actually made productivity worse. Nokia get this which is why they appear to have focused on solutions rather than one upmanship. (I am not a fanboy, I tend to switch brands depending on the current best option, prev phones being SE K800i and Nokia N95 8G - the best in their class.) I do think it is helpful to give a good product some hype - could change your life after all, and the fact I have just replaced my laptop with an E71 shows just how capable it is. I used the editable spreadsheet and presentation suite to close some business - in the palm of my hand!

I have had 5 HTC phones and none of them emulate or have even tried to emulate the iphone. They piss all over the iphone in almost every aspect. To emulate the iphone would be a backwards step for HTC. The reason they might be confused with said emulation is that they have made the gui more accessible, granted something that apple did from the off. It just so happens that HTC has come to a similar conclusion on gui design and use. I'm sure it is not a conscious effort to copy. I was once a very loyal Nokia owner but after the 6600, everything went downhill for them. They have alot of catching up to do but when they get there I would be happy to jump on the Nokia bandwagon once again.

I agree, the matte finish is nice. Thankfully, a matte screen protector would fix the non-pro glossies. For the poster who noted the slow interface issues, head to xda-developers and get a cooked rom.

The diamond is interesting for those who don't need the kb. Don't sleep on the upcoming touchscreen, keyboardless blackberry 9500 either.

FOR GOD'S SAKE.

The keyboard on the English language version will be QWERTY. This is the GERMAN language version.

Don't worry, if you buy one wherever you live it'll have the keyboard for your language.

It realy is a simple choice:

1) If you do not want a PDA phone and hate touchscreens you'll pick S740 (and get awesome device)
2) If you want stylish but powerful phone with GPS, HSDPA, VGA resolution _and_ you prefer light weight over qwerty keyboard - HTC Diamond is the right choice
3) If you do not care about weight and/or need qwerty keyboard and want all from 2) +microSD +TVOut you'll pick Touch Pro

iPhone is nowhere near this brainpuzzle ;)

ö ä ü and ß can be replaced by oe ae ue and ss... but having the Y and Z keys in the wrong position would be a real hassle because so many german words making use of Z would be typed wrong.

I think pic 17 shows what you are looking for - they show green FN onlays on top of other keys. U, O, A, S, in this case. So I'm pretty sure it is German.

Right on the First Part, 2nd.. Not so much. The whole point of the key placements on a keyboard come from good old typewriter days, so the keys we use most often are further apart so the hammers don't jam. Germans use Y as much as English natives use Z. So it makes sense that they are swapped.

Plus the Whole event is in Germany, in case any one forgot. All logical signs pointing to German keyboard. Hope you enjoyed your History lesson =p
