PSP-3000 battery life diminished by new screen, Sony suggests buying a bigger battery
According to a GameSpot interview with Sony's US director of hardware marketing John Koller, that new PSP-3000 screen may look a bit better... but it's going to cost you about 20 minutes of battery life. Luckily for you gamers with endless pockets out there, Koller assures that minor wrinkle will be offset because, "We're going to have the extended life battery that's still available for consumers, so we're still going to get the eight-to-ten hours out of that battery." So just to make that clear, the regular battery life will be diminished, but you can buy a new, larger battery from Sony to extend your gaming time. Got that? Good. Watch him say it for real in the video after the break.

No, we play full fledged games like God Of War for hours on end.
I kinda abandoned the whole PSP thing after my games kept on getting destroyed. And then my PSP eventually got stolen (much like my Xbox 360... Christ I have bad luck).
But this whole "Slimmer, brighter PSP" seems like something to boost sales about 1-2 years before the PSP 2 comes out, kinda like the smaller "PSone" and the Slim PS2.
yea, but you didn't have to carry those in your pockets all the time and worry about your pants falling down from the weight.
I thought Sony discontinued the Extended Life Battery about a month ago. I'm sure I read that on several different sights
People need to get a grip, 20 mins for a much brighter screen is worth it, and if you dont think so just put the screen brightness down?
Cant believe there is so little worth while news out there that this has become a report worthy story.....
20 minutes out of 2-3 hours of game play? To me sounds like a big deal - it's about 10%.
On other side, as others have suggested, one can always turn down screen brightness. Though personally I haven't seen that helping much, but probably enough to offset the lost 20 minutes.
The Extended Life Battery was discontinued about a month ago, that's right.
They discontinued it because it can be converted to Pandora battery, also the battery can't fit the 3000-model.
Sony is indeed going to make a new Extended Life Battery, and it may be pandora-proof.
About the "20 minutes".
In the interview the guy said about 20 to 30 minutes.
That's a lot when you only have 3-4 hours gameplay. That's why i bought the Extended Life Battery for my 2000-model.
I can play around 7-9 hours without charging or change the battery.
The changes on the 3000-model isn't enough, but we all know why they are changing models that often.
The hacked firmwares.
of all the things wrong with the psp that could have been fixed almost effortlessly, the absolute last thing it needed was a brighter or better screen. the screen has always looked pretty nice, and you could get a tan with the screen at its brightest. sony is not in touch with reality, and it's going to be a delightful ride to watch them spend themselves into oblivion
20 mins is not really a big deal..
And I would have bought a back-up battery anyways..
its the same problem the 2000 series had, and sony made the same suggestion then "buy the psp battery extender kit" as it is now,
u know...the kit that made the 2000 look like it had a hunchback... and what i thought was funny is that sony actually discontinued it..
don't get me wrong..i love my psps , but this is a waste of time and money.
all the updates are superficial, all eye candy and no new functionality, or its to quash the homebrew scene..
honestly i would pick up this new psp in a heartbeat if sony would include an updated version of flash, better browser, and boost the headphone volume, seems so simple, all this could be accomplished with a simple firmware update.
I still don't understand why people aren't screaming at Sony to put a right analog stick on the thing (and move the left one up displacing the D-pad below). It seems like I'm updating the OS every few months; would it really be that hard to ad a global patch for existing games to use a right analog stick? Its one of the systems greatest shortfalls.
Yet another Add-the-2nd-analog-stick-FFS comment.
1. There are no games right now that can support the dual analog stick on the PSP
2. Future Games that will support or let's say use the 2nd analog stick will make the PSP1000 to 3000 cry. Unless they add an option to choose.
3. If Sony will add the 2nd analog stick, they will surely add the R2 and L2 buttons as well.
4. They might be planing to add those in the PSP-2.
And move the left analog stick above the Dpad ?
That's like copying the 360 controller's layout.
Everyone who thinks a second analog stick is a good idea, is clearly not very smart. Making a PSP 1 with a second stick would inevitably counjour up games that are exclusive to that, inevitably making a psp2 and leaving millions of users in the dark. The seond analog im sure is in plan for PSP2. Sony stocks will fall so low its not going to be funny
Just matte the bit of the case that's over the screen. That'd make it viable for movies.
Remember, the reason we are seeing the 3000 at this point is that Sony wants to shut the door again on Custom Firmware. New MoBo, no booting firmware from memstick, no Pandora support, etc.
The 3000 will require a whole new series of exploits. And this is what the bosses are counting on, they are loosing money with every subsidized PSP and need to sell more UMDs to break even. I think it's a very realistic scenario that the PSP platform get destroyed by piracy, it's way too easy right now to mod a PSP via software only (not modchips, no soldering) and the games are everywhere to download.
I love my PSP, bought the fat first and then the slim, I love the platform, it's a great companion for longhaul flights and the homebrew scene has brought so much extra life to the PSP.
I think it's unrealistic to assume there will never be piracy on a platform (although the PS3 is still holding up), but there needs to be enough money made by Sony or they will cut their losses and walk away. And if there ever will be a PSP2, it will have no backwards compability ...
It's true that Koller said that the new PSP will have a short battery life due to hyped LCD but later on he said that the Sony's engineers in Japan are optimizing the battery so that it will have the same run time as the battery of PSP Slim without scarificing the display quality.

Does anyone think it's worth waiting juuust a bit more to see if the PSP-3000 will come WITH the extended battery life? (Or even expect a PSP-4000?) LoL
Ok nvm, I read on and found out the batt life won't change.
Wutever I'm waiting a few weeks before I get my hands on one, just to see what people say bout it.
