Down for everyone or just you? AT&T experiencing a major data outage on the East Coast.
Ruh-roh. AT&T's wireless data service seems to be down in a major way, at least on the eastern half of the country. We're seeing problems with both Edge and 3G from places such as Boston, New York and St. Louis. It's primarily iPhone users pinging us on this, and in AT&T's forums, but we're guessing it's not just limited to them. How is it looking for you?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: We've just spoken to AT&T and they've told us they're "aware of the reports." We'll keep our ear to the ground and update as soon as we have more.
Update 2: AT&T now tells us that it all came down to a "routing issue" in the Northeast that was patched up at 11:56AM this morning. For what it's worth, BlackBerry and text services were apparently unaffected -- but we doubt that's much consolation to iPhone users in withdrawl.

Wow the iPhone really sucks.
That thing is a disaster.
Hats off to Apple; they really managed to hoodwink a lot of people.
I heard some people using their iPhones to wedge open doors. Be careful though, it does tend to scratch them.
Andy @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:18AM
hah! I laugh every time i hear that AT&T sucks. we all knew this was true before the iphone came out, but all the fanboys stuck their fingers in their ears and hummed while they bought the latest apple toy.
what suprises me the most is that apple was dumb enough to allow their phones on at&t. can you imagine if the iphone was on verizon's reliability? people wouldn't have anything to complain about (except maybe the monthly fees!)
Matt @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:22AM
Yes, the iPhone is years ahead of other smartphones, including such advanced features as Copy & Paste, Flash, and MMS. The Future is here TODAY!
purepower @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:42AM
Im not an apple-fanboy, nor am I an iphone hater, just someone who thinks things through...
Seriously people, what makes you think it has anything to do with the iphone?
If there had been a few million additional blackberries stressing out the networks, the exact same problems would occure. It has nothing to do with the device itself, just the fact that it sold so well and has been more than att has been ready to handle is the underlying issue.
If GM were to release the Volt early, and it had a 500 mile range on the battery, millions of people would go buy them. However, putting millions of additional cars on the road (regardless of what car it is) would lead to traffic jams. The same tards saying the iphone sucks are the same tards that would say the volt sucks due to increased traffic.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUALITY OF THE DEVICE, just the additional stress added from it success.
I thought you al would have learned this by now, in light of the disproven reception issues...
Syke @ Sep 3rd 2008 11:13AM
Yup, theres no EDGE/3G here in Virginia.
Sean Lawrence @ Sep 3rd 2008 1:24PM
Mine is down in Philly....has been all morning (iphone) 3g and edge both don't work, but I can get phone calls. ATT should refund everyone this month for their shotty service. My Iphone's data service has been acting funny the past few weeks. Their network just isn't robust enough to handle all the users I guess.
THizzle7XU @ Sep 3rd 2008 12:24PM
My Blackjack is working fine here in the Cleveland, OH area. 3G and all :)
Jim @ Sep 3rd 2008 1:44PM
Its back up now. I am ATT. Back end is resolved
Anon @ Sep 3rd 2008 1:38PM
iPhone - It just works*
* - Conditions apply (does not cover phone usage)
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Sep 3rd 2008 2:13PM
If the data network was down, how were BlackBerries unaffected? Methinks we're not getting the whole story... Or do they just mean the BB 'service' was working, but you couldn't actually get the data to your device? hah.
Ztiworoh @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:48AM
All fine here in downtown DC
FearlessFreep @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:48AM
Out in Metro DC - completely.
John @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:18AM

brandon @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:31AM

none @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:52AM
I'm in NoVA and EDGE is down.
NiketP @ Sep 3rd 2008 11:02AM
Edge & 3G down in Baltimore downtown, Silver Spring and Rockville MD. Just drove across all three and hated not having access to Google Maps on my iPhone.
As a side note: Sad realization on how dependent we are on phone internet availability :( *sigh*
jon @ Sep 3rd 2008 11:21AM
Philadelphia edge, 3g is down
jvh @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:48AM

Jimjr @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:49AM
My data is fine... oh, wait... I have Verizon.... ;-)
dazepro @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:53AM
Touché ( =
winikeh @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:16AM
same here....
Not an issue with Verizon. It's a real shame Apple and Verizon didn't work out a deal for the iPhone.
Big Al @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:25AM
@winikeh: That wouldn't have happened. The 3G iPhone uses a WCDMA chipset. Verizon uses CDMA2000.
Basically, the iPhone uses GSM/EDGE and WCDMA, which is used is most places in the world. CDMA2000 is used in a small fraction in comparison (most of that is Verizon, too.) So, it was a no brainer for Apple to concentrate on WCDMA for 3G. Too bad they seem to have trouble integrating the 3G chip and getting it to play nice in the iPhone.
ByronGman @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:34AM
The one thing Verizon does that doesn't piss me off is their network.
Phones, UI, Get it Now = All Suck.
But I have never had a problem with service.
Sin @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:34AM
This ATT 3g rollout blows! Even my last Sprint phone the Mogul PPC-6800 on EVDO rev A. blows my iPhone 3g out of the water!!!
ATT- fastest network my A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dorf @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:49AM
@ByronGman
Dude, while I agree that Get It Now sucks, if it wasn't for VZW raking in all that cash from Get It Now, they might not have all that money to make their network so kick ass.
VZW = AT&T if it didn't have that Get It Now cash.
Dan Jensen @ Sep 3rd 2008 2:08PM
I've had more headaches on Verizon than any other network. My BlackBerry - both old and new - constantly flip back and forth between EV-DO and 1X... and half the time when they are in full reception EV-DO, they just don't connect to the interweb at all. Now that's reliability for ya!
JAmerican @ Sep 3rd 2008 5:08PM
Mine too... Oh wait, I have Sprint :)
aardWolf @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:49AM
I'm doing fine in the Memphis metropolitan area. I have full strength and full speed 3g.

rudefyet @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:34AM
3G and EDGE also working fine down here in Athens, OH
bluger @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:50AM
Yeah, I've been having problems since last night in DC. I have problems fairly often so I'm not sure if it is related to our current issues. Good thing the data plan is so cheap (##*$&%!!).
DSeaver @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:50AM
3g and edge down on my 3g iphone in and south of Boston Mass
Frun @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:21AM

I just got hit by a minor outage here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Rogers used to be part of AT&T and probably still share some towers)
hastings1 @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:53AM
No data service on EDGE in White Plains, NY (20 miles outside NYC).
Eric @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:56AM
Down for me too. All the way from Upstate down to Tarrytown... Glad to see this i thought it was my phone. Should have known ATT sucks really bad. As for the haters. I gladly take ATT's bad service and the iphone. I use the iphone 10% for voice calls 20% Edge the rest wifi and programs. Not a huge deal but can we get a little better coverage over here ATT, Just a little. Fewest dropped calls haaaaaa i used to use ATT and Verizon now i just dont talk to anyone. So my numbers are skewed they would be greater if i had it. Now i just learned to live w/o. I wonder if ATT will get better or Verizon will get iphone, perhaps hell will freeze first.
Bruce @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:53AM
Yes, I called them at 7:30AM to report my service being down on all of my iphones. I'm from philly.
Alex @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:53AM
