World's first "no lamp replacement, liquid-cooled" 1080p projector lands at CEDIA
If your friends ever cracked a single joke on you for having a liquid-cooled gaming rig, watch real close and see if they don't end up swooning over this one. Taiwanese OEM / ODM supplier Chilin Technology has introduced the planet's first "lamp-free 1080p projector with liquid cooling" at this year's CEDIA Expo. The firm has partnered with Luminus Devices (for its PhlatLight LED) and Texas Instruments (for its 1080p DMD tech) in order to produce the device, which will boast 600 ANSI lumens, a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, 128% NTSC color gamut and a lamp good for around 50,000 hours (or, in Chillin's view, forever). As for a release date, we know it'll be demonstrated here in Denver, but there's no word on how quickly it'll begin shipping out to customers.

And what if the bulb goes out?
Wolfticket @ Sep 3rd 2008 7:57PM
"The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at and repair."

And what if you actually read?
There is no bulb. (Read LED)
A better question would be, "what if a light-emitting diode went out?".
Reason @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:49PM
The light source is LED.. It will never go out unless the something went terribly wrong with the cooling.. The life time only means it emit 70% of its initial output after 50,000 hours.. An LED will always emit light no matter how long it is running for, the only thing that changes is the brightness...
maty @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:04PM
As assumption here, but with such a bold claim they'd have to back it up and probably have the bulb under warranty... probably. :P
"Forever" = "24 hours a day for 5.71 years". ;) Unless my maths is wrong, do correct me if I am.
Decoy @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:33PM
Nice projector, this is one of those liquid cooled ones right? Awesome, awesome, hey, is that a dead pixel?
polobunny @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:39PM
No, your math is right maty. It isn't 'forever' but it will take a damn while.
Let's not be ridiculous though, and let's assume a more normal workshift for that projector. 8 hours per day.
That's 17 years. Not sure you'll want to use that old and disturbingly low resolution thing in 17 years...
MioTheGreat @ Sep 3rd 2008 10:35PM
Ha. Projectors with "Resolutions" in 17 years.
I'm hoping that we hit the point where we can project things on the order of the wavelength of the specific frequency of light in question, (making resolution irrelevant, because you can't get any better) in a few decades...
Christopher @ Sep 3rd 2008 11:57PM
To the person who mentioned something about 70% brightness, and LEDs will always emit light, you're forgetting one scenario. :P
What if, say, someone uses an LED without a current-resisting resistor, thus causing the bulb to actually burn out? I've done it once or twice just for experimentation, and I'm pretty sure that the couple LEDs I killed no longer can emit light. Just being picky. ^_^
The cool thing about leaving out the resistor, then turning up the voltage, is that the LED changes color before it burns out.
MioTheGreat @ Sep 4th 2008 2:24PM
I would be *VERY* surprised if this was run with a simple resistor ballast.
They probably have a much more sophisticated current mirroring setup going on. One LED per channel, always: Or you risk thermal runaway on a single LED causing it to draw more current and blow up.
blueangel00100 @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:03PM
I love how the article says the projector is lamp free and then goes on to say its lamp lasts for 50,000 hours.
It's has a LED light source which is supposed to last for 50,000 hours.
Maybe Engadget should read their own "read" link.
Wwhat @ Sep 4th 2008 12:57AM
We know Marrvia, and then he says the 'lamp' last 50K hours and not the 'LED' lasts 50K hours, thanks for paying attention.
petrov @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:24PM
600 lumens? bleh
Sean @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:33PM
No lamp replacement?
Bullcrap... everything burns out eventually.
Jason T @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:17PM
Yes, everything does burn out eventually, hence the reference to 50,000 hours. Is it just late or something in the US? I mean, there is a huge wealth of common sense information right in the text of this post and yet there's a gaggle of geese honking about the stats. The only thing really missing is a price. And since I have to ask, yeah, I know I can't afford it...
Nunja Business @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:35PM
600 lumens? That's ok if you are in a pitch black room to view it, but worthless anywhere else.
I don't care what the resolution is if I can't see the frapping thing!
kojo87 @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:37PM
is this picture in someone's hotel room or something?
stealth658 @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:38PM
At least you pretended to post a relevant comment before posting some spam link, but you still fail.
Tian @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:45PM
I'm sure it means something else in Chinese but it does seem like "Chilin" is an awfully appropriate brand name to market this product.
Peter @ Sep 3rd 2008 8:53PM
if it is liquid cooled then what are those holes on the side for?
quiksilv3r @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:07PM
speed holes
Dojo @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:25PM
To air cool the liquid... LOL
elijahb @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:02PM
it only lasts for 5.7 years of projection
Rivet @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:59PM
That 5 and a half years at 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
webmaster @ Sep 3rd 2008 9:41PM
It looks amazing - industrial. LED I think is the future. Low power and perfect color temp. It use to be (3 or 4 yrs ago) that it cost $25k to have 1080p/24. Now it's $3500. Maybe this will give me something to salivate over, because lately, nothing excites me in AV.

I'd like to see that go through the security checkpoint!
Wwhat @ Sep 4th 2008 1:00AM
Doesn't look like it's going in any hand luggage or even bags, looks like you have to ship it separately in a crate.
Dimitri @ Sep 4th 2008 2:45AM
It's so tiny too. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't worry about the bulb lasting 5 years; I'd worry more about the ceiling mounts. Wouldn't want that death-in-a-box looming over my head.
SuperDre @ Sep 4th 2008 2:58PM
ahhh, thanks to this article we also now know how much lumens the other 2 phatlight projectors are which were discussed here recently..
600lumens is pretty bad, the H79 which I own is advertised as 1100 and that's already a bit low especially when the lamp has a few 100 hours on it.. So I guess 600 is much to 'dark' for the prices they'll propably ask.. also liquid cooling suggest enough about the heat the phatlights (and other electronics) are producing..
But I'm looking forward to reading the review (and prices) on these new 'lampless' projectors.. and again, I hope they will make LED-replacements for the current bulbs we 'older' projectors are using, so we don't have to buy a new expensive (short lived) bulb again, but instead buy a 'cheap' longlife replacement (hell I'd even pay the full price of a bulb for a LED replacement)..
musicremy @ Sep 4th 2008 4:42PM
What booth is this at? i would love to see it!

Most notable, the no shattering, no lamp replacement, HD DLP home theater projector will be demonstrated at CEDIA EXPO 2008 in a private suite located on the 10th Floor, Room # 1014 of the Hilton Garden Inn, 1400 Welton Street, Denver, Colorado. The Chilin suite will be accessible from September 3rd-6th, where Chilin will be showcasing their entire series of DLP based 1080P projectors for existing and future OEM/ODM partners.
